With the blessing of His Grace Bishop Irenei of London and Western Europe, a new mission community has been established in Telford, Shropshire (England), under the spiritual protection of St Chad of Lichfield. The first Divine Liturgy of the community was served on Saturday 30th June / 13th July 2019 at the Serbian Orthodox Church of St Nicholas in Telford — a church temple generously offered for the use of the new community by His Grace Bishop Dositej of the Serbian Orthodox Eparchy of Britain and Scandinavia.
The community’s first Divine Liturgy was attended by a mixture of Russian, Ukrainian and British faithful, and was supported by the presence of the Chancellor of Great Britain and Ireland, Archpriest Paul Elliot (from the Parish of St Elisabeth in Wallasey). After the conclusion of the Divine Liturgy a shared lunch was enjoyed in the church hall.
Background on the new community.
Having received the petition of numerous faithful in the region, Bishop Irenei travelled to the area in Paschaltide to explore the possibilities for a new community. Thanks to the generous hospitality of the Serbian Orthodox Eparchy, the Orthodox church building of St Nicholas was been made available to the new mission. The trustees of the Serbian community have warmly welcomed the opportunity to foster additional Divine Services in the region.
His Grace Bishop Irenei has entrusted the pastoral care of the new community to Priest Spiridon Bailey, who was received into the ranks of the clergy of the Diocese at the beginning of this year and is an attached cleric of the Parish of St Elisabeth in Wallasey.
While the new mission’s first Liturgy was celebrated on a Saturday in order to make possible the concelebration of Archpriest Paul Elliott, in future the mission’s normal pattern shall be for Divine Liturgies to be held on the first and third Sundays of the month.
The location of Divine Services is St Nicholas Church, 18 Wellington Road, Muxton, Telford TF2 8NQ, England.
