THURSDAY, 8 / 21 SEPTEMBER 2023: On the Great Feast of the Nativity of the Mother of God, the Altar Feast of the Diocesan Cathedral in London, England, was celebrated by His Grace Bishop Irenei of London and Western Europe, co-served the clergy of the Cathedral, Archpriests Vitaly Serapinas and Yaroslav Hudymenko, together with Deacons Andrei Borisas and Sergei Baranov. The local clergy were joined by clerics from elsewhere in the Diocese’s UK territories, including Archpriest Paul Elliott, Rector of St Elisabeth’s Parish in Wallasey and Chancellor of the Diocese; Hieromonk Mark (Underwood), rector of the Kazan Icon Parish in Cardiff, Wales and priest of the St Vladimir Parish in Cheltenham, England; Priest Mark Tattum-Smith of the Parish of the Mother of God ‘Joy of All Who Sorrow’ in Mettingham; Priest Alexander Groves of the All-Merciful Saviour Parish in St Leonards on Sea; and Priest Robert Williams of St Coleman’s Parish in Stradbally and the St Patrick Mission in Ireland; and to these were joined clerical concelebrants from other local Orthodox jurisdictions: Archpriest Joseph Skinner (Diocese of Sourozh), Hieromonk Paisius (Djerkovic, Serbian Orthodox Church), and Priest Viktor Stojchev (Macedonian Orthodox Church) — together with a host of Subdeacons and Readers.

The Cathedral grounds, and the temple itself, having been beautifully prepared in advance by the parish Sisterhood and many parishioner volunteers, the Divine Services of the Feast began on Wednesday evening with the greeting of His Grace at the beginning of the All-Night Vigil, which was sung by a men’s chorale of the Cathedral Choir. On the feastday itself, Bishop Irenei was greeted at the porch of the Cathedral and the Divine Liturgy of the Feast undertaken in a solemn and joyful spirit by the large collection of clergy and servers standing amidst a full church. The gathering of believers included not only the faithful of the Cathedral parish itself, but visiting faithful from across London, Manchester, Wales, the east of England, and even further afield. The Divine Services were sung beautifully by the Cathedral’s full choir, composed of the voices of the faithful eager to sing to the glory of the Mother of God.

During the Third Hour, a pious layman of the All-Merciful Saviour Parish near Hastings, Ioannis Sklavenitis, was tonsured a Reader.

Following a homily at the end of the Liturgy by Vladyka Irenei, a festive Cross-procession was held in a surprising bout of radiant sunshine that broke through the rain which had prevailed during the previous day, and a moleben was served in honour of the Theotokos, all the faithful kneeling in prayerful supplication before her holy icon.

At the conclusion of the services, Bishop Irenei greeted the assembled clergy and faithful with the joy of the Feast. The day concluded with a beautifully-prepared luncheon in the Cathedral Hall, organised by the Sisterhood, at which a bountiful meal was offered and many words exchanged amongst the faithful and clergy who remained to visit for several hours.

Его Преосвященству сослужили клирики собора протоиереи Виталий Серапинас и Ярослав Гудыменко, и диаконы Андрей Борисас и Сергей Баранов. К местному духовенству присоединились клирики из других мест великобританской территории епархии, среди которых: протоиерей Павел Эллиотт, настоятель прихода святой Елизаветы в Уолласи и епархиальный секретарь; иеромонах Марк (Андервуд), настоятель прихода Казанской иконы Божией Матери в Кардифф, Уэльс и священнослужитель прихода Святого Владимира в Челтенхэм, Англия; иерей Марк Таттум-Смит из храма Богородицы «Всех скорбящих Радость» в Меттингем; иерей Александр Граувс из прихода Всемилостивого Спаса в Сент-Леонардс-он-Си; иерей Роберт Уильямс из прихода святого Коулмана в Страдбалли и миссии святого Патрика в Ирландии; и к ним присоединились священнослужители из других поместных православных юрисдикций: протоиерей Иосиф Скиннер (Сурожская епархия), иеромонах Паисий (Джеркович, Сербская Православная Церковь) и священник Виктор Стойчев (Македонская Православная Церковь), а также большое количество иподиаконов и чтецов.

Территория собора и самого храма, заранее была прекрасно подготовленная приходским сестричеством и множеством прихожан-волонтеров. Богослужения праздника начались в среду вечером встречей Преосвященного епископа Иринея в начале Всенощного бдения. В четверг утром Епископа Иринея встретили у входа в Собор, а праздничная Божественная литургия в переполненном храме была отслужена в торжественном и радостном духе большим собором духовенства и церковнослужителей. Огромное количество верующих включало не только прихожан самого кафедрального прихода, но и гостей из Лондона, Манчестера, Уэльса, с востока Англии и даже из еще более отдаленных мест. На богослужениях прекрасно пел смешанный хор собора.

Во время Третьего часа был пострижен во чтецы благочестивый алтарник прихода Всемилостивого Спаса в Сент-Леонардс-он-Си, Иоанн Склавенитис.

После проповеди по окончании литургии Владыка Ириней возглавил праздничный крестный ход и молебен в честь Пресвятой Богородицы. На молебне все верующие преклонили колени в особой молитве перед ее святой иконой.

По окончании богослужения епископ Ириней поприветствовал собравшихся духовенство и верующих радостью праздника. Праздник завершился в соборном зале прекрасно приготовленной трапезой, организованной сестричеством, на котором были поданы обильные блюда, а верующие и духовенство обменялись приветствиями и общением, продолжавшемся несколько часов.
