The patronal feastday of the Geneva Cathedral of the Exaltation of the Cross was solemnly celebrated on 14th / 27th September 2019 by the Diocesan Bishop, His Grace Bishop Irenei of London and Western Europe, together with the Vicar Bishop of the Diocese, His Grace Bishop Alexander of Vevey, amidst the God-loving clergy of the Cathedral and those arriving from other Swiss parishes in order to share in the joy of the sacred occasion — including clergy from our ROCOR parishes in Zurich, Bern and Vevey, together with the MP parish in Geneva. Despite the feastday falling this year on a Friday, a working day, the Cathedral was crowded with an enormous number of believers, who were aided in their prayer by the Cathedral choir, led by the Reader Matthew Malinin and Mrs Larisa Popovich.
At the conclusion of All-Night Vigil on Thursday evening, the special Rite of the Exaltation of the Honourable and Life-Creating Cross of the Lord was served, as befits the dignity of a Cathedral church and which in the custom of our Church is celebrated only by a Hierarch. On this occasion, two Bishops concelebrated the rite, in which the Precious Cross, adorned with flowers and bathed in rose water, was elevated five times amidst the singing of a five-hundred-fold ‘Lord, have mercy!’, in commemoration of the elevation of the Cross in Jerusalem upon its discovery. The next morning, on the feast itselt, the Reader Aviv Salliu-Diallo, a server at the Parish of St Barbara in Vevey, was ordained a Subdeacon by Bishop Irenei at the Sixth Hour, and during the Divine Liturgy His Grace Alexander, the Bishop of Vevey, ordained him a Deacon.
In a heartfest sermon for the Feast, Vladyka Irenei addressed the faithful on the meaning and place of the Life-giving Cross of the Lord in the life of every Christian. His Grace pointed out that ‘The Cross of the Lord is the foundation of the universe. The Cross is the true Tree of Life that was first planted in Paradise. The Cross is the entrance to the kingdom of heaven!’ — thus emphasizing that the way of self sacrifice, of cross-bearing, is the only way of the Christian and constitutes the path leading to eternal Life.
After the Divine Liturgy had concluded, a Cross procession around the Cathedral took place, led by the choir, clergy, and all the faithful. Prayers were offered at the four sides of the Temple, with the reading of the Gospel and the anointing with Holy Water. At the conclusion of the moleben, the senior cleric of the Cathedral, the mitred Archpriest Pavel Tsvetkov, spoke on behalf of his fellow clergy and all the faithful, expressing their genuine joy in the presence of the ruling Archpastor of community, as well as the Diocese as a whole; and Fr Praul went on to wish everyone present for the feast health, joy and God’s blessings. A joyful ‘Many Years!’ was then sung for the Patriarch, the First-hierarch and Holy Synod of the Russian Church Abroad, the local community, and the newly-ordained Deacon Aviv.
After the prayers, a festive meal took place in the garden behind the Cathedral amidst unseasonably beautiful weather, uniting clergy and laity in friendly fellowship after the Holy Eucharist.
Престольный праздник Кресто-Воздвиженского кафедрального собора был особо торжественно отпразднован в 2019 г. Богослужения возглавил Управляющий епархией епископ Лондонский и Западно-Европейский Ириней в сослужении викарного епископа Вевейского Александра, клириков кафедрального храма и священнослужителей из иных приходов Швейцарии, прибывших из Берна, Цюриха и Веве разделить радость женевского торжества. В эти дни, невзирая на рабочее время, храм был переполнен верующими. Хор под руководством чтеца Матфея Малинина и Ларисы Попович искусно исполнял церковные песнопения.
На Всенощном Бдении состоялся чин Воздвижения Чеснаго и Животворящего Креста Господня, подобающий кафедральному храму, в котором в этом году приняли участие два архиерея. В день праздника за Божественной Литургией чтец кафедрального храма Авив Саллиу-Диалло епископом Вевейским Александром был рукоположен в сан диакона.
Со словом проповеди к верующим обратился Владыка Ириней, который раскрыл значение Животворящего Креста Господня в жизни каждого христианина. Его Преосвященство указал, что «Крест Господень является основой Вселенной. Крест – это настоящее Древо Жизни, которое было впервые посажено в Раю. Крест – это вход в Небесное Царство». Проповедник особо подчеркнул, что путь крестоношения является единственным путем христианина, и это путь, ведущий к Жизни Вечной!
После богослужения состоялся крестный ход с окроплением святой водой. От имени прихода архипастыря и гостей приветствовал ключарь кафедрального храма протоиерей Павел Цветков, который поделился подлинной радостью о радении правящего Архипастыря о женевской общине и пожелал всем, понесшим в эти дни труды по прибытию в кафедральный храм, здравия и долгоденствия. Всему освященному Собору Русской Зарубежной Церкви, а также новоиспеченному диакону Авиву было провозглашено Многолетие!
После богослужения, при прекрасной погоде, в саду за церковной апсидой храма состоялась общая трапеза, объединившая клириков и мирян в дружественном общении после Святой Евхаристии.
