From 14th-15th December 2019, His Grace Bishop Irenei made an archpastoral visit to the Parish of the Nativity of Christ and St Nicholas the Wonderworker in Florence, Italy.
His Grace Bishop Irenei of London and Western Europe marked his second visit to the ancient Florentine church, by first participating, on Saturday 14th December, in a symposium honouring the heritage of Russian Orthdoxy in Florence on the occasion of the 120th anniversary of the laying of the first stone for the construction of the diocesan church — the first Russian Orthodox temple in Italy.
The event was attended by many participants, including government officials, eminent researchers and students. Participants heard reports on the history of relations between the West and the Orthodox Church, the presence and contribution of Russian dynasties to the cultural prosperity of the city and the region, the Florentine period of the life of St Maxim the Greek and the visits the city in 1892 by the writer Leo Tolstoy, as well as the educational activities of the founder of St Nicholas Church, Archpriest Vladimir Levitsky.
Mr Eugenio Giani, President of the Tuscany Regional Council, emphasised in his remarks the importance of the relationship between the Latin and Slavic cultures, which have crossed for centuries in Florence. In the course of the symposium, Bishop Irenei spoke at length with the Ambassador of the Russian Federation to the Holy See, Mr Alexander Avdeev, and Mr Sergey Razov, a diplomat in Italy.
On Sunday, 15th December, His Grace led the Divine Liturgy in the parish Church. Vladyka was co-served by Archpriest George Blatinsky, Rector of the Parish, together with Priest Oleg Tsurkan and Deacon Vladimir Svistun, who arrived from Geneva for the celebration. During the Third Hour, the long-standing parishioner and singer, Roman Barladyan, was tonsure as Reader for the parish.
In his homily at the conclusion of the Divine Liturgy, Bishop Irenei examined in detail the call of the apostle Paul in the Epistle to the Ephesians (chap. 5), with his root verse, ‘Awake, you who are sleeping, and rise from the dead, and Christ will enlighten you!’ (Ephesians 5.14). Pointing to the relevance of this biblical appeal to modern times, the preacher noted that the apostle, ‘knows something about the human heart and the world in which we live. He knows that this world, with all its beauty and visible glory, can yet be a place of deep darkness.’ Vladyka emphasized that faith and zeal should make everyone live with grace, stay spiritually awake and be active, not falling into spiritual sleep. For this, it is necessary to be guided by the words of the Apostle, ‘to act circumspectly, not mindlessly, but with wisdom, redeeming the time, for the days are evil’ (Eph. 5.15,16). The bishop called on everyone to replace darkness in their hearts with light, and to sweep away the evil that drains faith and turns truth into something relative, bearing in mind that God’s will is that the fallen world be changed for the better. He concluded that ‘our light is Christ, and the Church is his Body and the refuge of our salvation!’
After the sermon, the Rector of the parish, Archpriest George Blatinsky, addressed Bishop Irenei with a word of thanksgiving from all the faithful, inviting His Grace to visit the Florentine church even more often, instructing the people of God in the truths of faith and piety. Then ‘Many Years’ was proclaimed for the whole Holy Sobor of Bishops of the Russian Orthodox Church Abroad, as well as to the local clergy, faithful, and the newly-tonsured Reader Roman.
After the service, a meal was held in the lower church, where numerous parishioners continued in friendly fellowship with the Bishop. On Sunday evening, December 15, His Grace departed for London.

Преосвященнейший епископ Лондонский и Западно-Европейский Ириней совершил архипастырский визит во флорентийский храм на честь Рождества Христова и святителя Николая Чудотворца. В субботу 14 декабря Его Преосвященство принял участие в симпозиуме, посвященном 120-летию закладки первого камня под строительство этого древнейшего православного храма Италии.
Мероприятие посетило множество участников, в том числе представители власти, именитые исследователи и студенты. Были заслушаны доклады ученых об истории взаимоотношений Запада с Православной Церковью, присутствии и вкладе русских династий в культурное процветание города и региона, флорентийском периоде жизни св. Максима Грека и посещении города в 1892 г. писателем Львом Толстым, а также просветительской деятельности основателя Свято-Никольского храма протоиерея Владимира Левитского.
Президент регионального Совета Тосканы господин Евгений Джани (итал. Eugenio Giani) в своем докладе подчеркнул важность взаимоотношений латинской и славянской культур, которые испокон веков пересекались во Флоренции. В рамках симпозиума Владыка Ириней имел общение с послом Российской Федерации в Итальянской Республике господином Александром Авдеевым и господином Сергеем Разовым – дипломатом в Ватикане.
В воскресенье 15 декабря Его Преосвященство возглавил Божественную Литургию в храме Рождества Христова и Святителя Николая. Владыке сослужил настоятель прихода протоиерей Георгий Блатинский, священник Олег Цуркан, а также диакон Владимир Свистун, прибывший из Женевы. На третьем часе была совершена хиротесия во чтецы многолетнего певчего Романа Бырладяну.
В слове проповеди после Божественной Литургии Преосвященнейший Владыка Ириней детально рассмотрел призыв апостола Павла в воскресном послании к Ефесянам (гл.5), с его коренным стихом «Встань спящий, и воскресни из мертвых, и осветит тя Христос!» (Еф. 5:14). Указывая на актуальность этого библейского призыва в современности, проповедник отметил, что апостол: «знал кое-что о человеческом сердце и о мире, в котором мы живем. Он знал, что этот мир при всей его красоте и видимой славе, может быть местом глубокой тьмы». Владыка подчеркнул, что вера и рвение должны заставить каждого жить с благодатью, бодрствовать и быть активным, а не засыпать духовно. Для этого необходимо руководствоваться словами апостола, «поступать осторожно, не как неразумные, но как мудрые, дорожа временем, ибо дни лукавые» (Еф. 5:15,16). Архиерей призвал каждого заменить в своем сердце тьму светом, и отметать зло, которое истощает веру и превращает истину во что-то относительное, памятуя, что воля Божья заключается в изменении мира к лучшему. Проповедник заключил, что: «наш свет это Христос, а Церковь – его Тело и убежище нашего спасения!»
После проповеди настоятель прихода протоиерей Георгий Блатинский обратился к епископу Иринею с благодарственным словом, приглашая Его Преосвященство чаще посещать флорентийский храм, наставляя народ Божий в истинах веры и благочестия. Затем было провозглашено Многолетие всему освященному собору Русской Православной Церкви Заграницей, а также новоиспеченному чтецу Роману.
После богослужения в нижнем храме состоялась трапеза, где многочисленные прихожане продолжили дружественное общение с Архиереем. Вечером в воскресенье 15 декабря Его Преосвященство отбыл в Лондон.
