Members and friends of the Nikolsky Association of Orthodox Students at the University of Fribourg, Switzerland, warmly received His Grace Bishop Alexander of Vevey, Vicar of the Western European Diocese of the Russian Orthodox Church Outside of Russia, who delivered a lecture on the significance of Great Lent. The lecture took place on 2nd April 2019 at the first ‘Evening of the Philanthropy,’ beginning with a prayer to St Nicholas in the Orthodox students’ chapel, located in the University’s Saleianum Hall. Among the participants were Prof. B. Hallensleben, Director of the Center for the Study of the Eastern Churches; Honorary Rector of the University of Fribourg, Fr Guido Vergauven; the confessor of the Association, diocesan Priest Ioann Ciurin; as well as Mr Gabriel Solomon, an icon painter from Romania and Mr Stephen Constantinescu, President of the Association of St Nicholas, as well as many university students of different religious backgrounds.
His Grace Bishop Alexander spoke about the importance of the spiritual journey of the ‘Holy Forty Days’ and the concept of passing through a forty-day ‘desert’ in order to attain to the Holy Resurrection. His Grace emphasized the liturgical aspects of Lent and their pedagogical significance, which shelter us in a special atmosphere during this period, often characterised as ‘radiant sadness’ or ‘joyful sorrow’. In this sense, the symbolic significance of the Lenten weeks and the liturgical rhythm of the Orthodox Church was discussed, as well as the exceptional importance in the spiritual journey of every person of the Holy Cross, which was especially reverenced on the preceding Sunday, and which is the center of everything for everyone.
After the lecture, the Bishop held a friendly conversation with teachers and students.

Члены и друзья Никольской ассоциации православных студентов во Фрибургском университете с радостью приняли визит епископа Вевейского Александра, викария Западно-Европейской епархии Русской Православной Церкви Заграницей, который прочитал лекцию о значении Великого Поста. Доклад состоялся 2 апреля 2019 г. на первом «Вечере Добротолюбия». Собрание началось с молитвы к святителю Николаю в православной студенческой часовне, которая находится в общежитии «Салезианум». Среди участников присутствовали г-жа проф. Барбара Халленслебен, директор Центра изучения церквей Востока, почетный ректор Фрибургского университета о. Гвидо Вергаувен, иерей Иоанн Чурин – духовник Ассоциации, г-н Габриэль Соломон, иконописец из Румынии и г-н Стефан Константинеску, президент Ассоциации Св. Николая, а также множество студентов университета различных вероисповеданий.
Его Преосвященство рассказал о важности духовного путешествия «Святой Четыредесятницы» и пересечения сорокадневной «пустыни» с целью достичь Святого Воскресения. Епископ Александр подчеркнул литургические аспекты Великого поста и их образовательное значение для того, чтобы держать нас в особой атмосфере этого периода, который часто именуется “лучезарной грустью”. В этом смысле было раскрыто символическое значение великопостных недель и литургического ритма Православной Церкви, а также исключительное значение в духовном путешествии каждого, Святого Креста, особо почитаемого в прошлое воскресенье, и который является центром всего и вся. После лекции состоялась дружественная беседа Архиерея с преподавателями и студенческой молодежью.

Les membres et les ami-e-s de l’Association St-Nicolas des étudiant-e-s orthodoxes à l’Université de Fribourg ont eu le plaisir de recevoir la visite du Monseigneur Alexandre de Vevey, évêque vicaire du Diocèse de l’Europe occidentale de l’Église orthodoxe russe à l’étranger. Nous sommes très reconnaissants et nous remercions vivement à Mgr Alexandre d’avoir donné une conférence sur le sens du Grand Carême lors de notre première soirée philocalique. La soirée a débuté avec une prière adressée à Saint Nicolas, notre Saint Patron, dans la chapelle orthodoxe des étudiants qui se trouve dans le Convict Salesianum. Parmi lesparticipants, nous mentionnons particulièrement la présence de Madame Prof. Barbara Hallensleben, directrice du Centre d’études des Églises d’Orient, du Père Guido Vergauwen, recteur émérite de l’Université de Fribourg, du Père Ioan Ciurin, l’aumônier de l’Association, du M. Gabriel Solomon, iconographe de Roumanie et du M. Stefan Constantinescu, président de l’Association St-Nicolas.
Après l’accueil dans la chapelle, Son Éminence nous a parlé de l’importance du cheminement de la « sainte quarantaine » et de la traversée du « désert » des quarante jours pour arriver à la Résurrection. Mgr Alexandre a souligné notamment les aspects liturgiques du Carême et leur rôle pédagogique afin de nous maintenir dans l’atmosphère spécifique de cette période, appelée également « la radieuse tristesse ». En ce sens, nous avons pris note de l’importance symbolique des dimanches du Grand Carême et du rythme liturgique de l’Église, spécialement du rôle central accordé à la Sainte Croix, vénérée le dimanche passé. Mgr Alexandre nous a expliqué le sens théologique du troisième dimanche du Carême et de la centralité occupée par la Croix dans notre cheminement spirituel. Mgr Alexandre a accentué que les pères de l’Église ont consacré la vénération de la Croix au centre du Carême car celle-ci symbolise analogiquement le contenu du temps, la Croix est le centre de tous et de tout.
