28-29 MAY 2023: With the blessing of His Grace Bishop Irenei of London and Western Europe, on the first day, Sunday 28th May, after the celebration of the Divine Liturgy in the parish of Saint John the Russian in Lyon and a communal meal, more than thirty parishioners, together with their Rector, Archpriest Quentin de Castelbajac, departed on a pilgrimage to Haute-Loire in south-central France, to sites associated with the veneration of the Mother of God, the Archangel Michael, and the Orthodox Saints Evodius (6th century) and Julian (4th century). The following report of the pilgrimage has been received from one of its participants:
“The first part of the pilgrimage was to Puy-en-Velay, where we encountered the hieromonks Amphilochios (Besson) and Maxime (Morice), of the Orthodox Fraternity of Saint Michael.
“A guided tour of the cathedral of Puy-en-Velay then followed, which enlightened us on the evangelisation of the Puy region, whose first bishop was Saint Evodius (6th century). The pilgrims venerated the ‘stone of fevers’, a very large stone from Mont Anis, where the Mother of God appeared in AD 420 to perform miraculous cures. It was following these apparitions that a first church was built on the place indicated by the Mother of God, and that pilgrimages to Puy-en-Velay began. The cathedral has magnificent frescoes from the 12th and 13th centuries, in the Byzantine style.
“In a chapel, the Catholic nuns opened up for veneration by our pilgrims the treasury of many relics, with fragments of the Holy Cross, of Saint John the Baptist and many holy martyrs and hierarchs.
“The day continued with a visit to the Chapelle Saint-Michel d’Aiguilhe, which has sat at the top of the Rocher Saint Michel (St Michael’s Rock) since the 10th century. One must climb no fewer than 268 steps to reach the summit, to discover this small Romanesque church with again very beautiful frescoes and where we were able to sing the tropar and kondak of Saint Archangel Michael, whose memory is particularly marked in the region.
“On the morning of the second day, Monday 29th May, the pilgrims arrived in Lissac to celebrate an Akathist to St Michael and all the celestial powers, in the temple of the hermitage of fathers Amphilochios and Maxime, dedicated to the Archangel.
“We then went to Brioude, where there stands a basilica within which we were able to venerate the relics of the Orthodox Saint Julian de Brioude whose place of martyrdom (at the very beginning of the 4th century AD) is 2km further on. We began here with a visit to an ancient baptistery next to the basilica, discovered only recently. Its presence in Brioude testifies to the importance of the veneration of Saint Julien. After celebrating a moleben before the relics of the saint, all the pilgrims venerated them as well as his icon, painted by the sisters of the Russian Orthodox Monastery of the Znameny Icon of the Mother of God. We the concluded with a visit to the chapel of Saint Michel in the basilica, where once again there are magnificent frescoes representing the celestial world around Christ dominating the infernal world.
“The pilgrimage came to its blessed end with a visit to the Russian Orthodox Monastery of the Znameny Icon of the Mother of God in Marcenat, where Mother Abbess Anastasia welcomed us. There we celebrated a concluding moleben, in front of the icon of the Theotokos ‘Of the Sign’, before returning to Lyon. Glory to God for this pilgrimage which brought us together under the aegis of the Archangel Saint Michael, considered the patron saint of France!”

28-29 MAI 2023 : Avec la bénédiction de notre Evêque Irénée, le premier jour, dimanche 28 mai, après la célébration de la liturgie dans l’église de saint Jean le Russe à Lyon et un déjeuner en commun, plus d’une trentaine des paroissiens avec leur Recteur, l’archiprêtre Quentin de Castelbajac, sont partis en pélérinage en Haute-Loire dans le centre-sud de la France, vers des sites associés à la vénération de la Mère de Dieu, l’archange Michel et les saints orthodoxes Evodius (6e siècle) et Julien (4e siècle). Le rapport suivant du pèlerinage a été reçu de l’un de ses participants :
« Première étape : le Puy-en-Velay, où nous avons retrouvé les hiéromoines Amphilochios (Besson) et Maxime (Morice), de la Fraternité Orthodoxe saint Michel.
« Une visite guidée de la cathédrale du Puy-en-Velay, qui nous a éclairés sur l’évangélisation de la région du Puy, dont le premier évêque fut Saint Évode. Les pélerins ont vénéré la “pierre des fièvres”, une très grande la pierre issue du Mont Anis, où s’est manifestée la Mère de Dieu en 420 pour opérer des guérisons miraculeuses. C’est suite à ces apparitions qu’une première église fut construite sur le lieu indiqué par la Mère de Dieu, et qu’ont commencé les pèlerinages au Puy-en-Velay. La cathédrale comporte de magnifiques fresques du XIIe et du XIIIe siècle de style byzantin.
« Dans une chapelle, les moniales catholiques ont ouvert à la vénération pour nos pèlerins le trésor de très nombreuses reliques, avec des fragments de la sainte Croix, du chef de saint Baptiste et de saints Martyrs et Pontifes.
« La journée s’est poursuivie avec la visite de la Chapelle Saint-Michel d’Aiguilhe qui se trouve au sommet du Rocher Saint Michel depuis le Xe siècle. Il faut gravir pas moins de 268 marches pour parvenir au sommet, et découvrir cette petite église romane avec là-encore de très belles fresques et où nous avons pu chanter le tropaire et kondakion du Saint Archange Michel, dont la mémoire est particulièrement marquée dans la région.
« Le matin du deuxième jour, le lundi 29 mai, les pélerins sont arrivés à Lissac pour célébrer un acathiste au saint archistratège Michel et toutes les puissances célestes, dans l’église de l’ermitage des pères Amphilochios et Maxime, dédié au saint Archange.
« Nous sommes ensuite partis à Brioude dans la Basilique où nous avons pu vénérer les reliques de Saint Julien de Brioude dont le lieu du martyre (au tout début du IVe siècle) se trouve 2km plus loin. Nous avons commencé par la visite d’un ancien baptistère à côté de la Basilique, découvert très récemment.. Sa présence à Brioude témoigne de l’importance du culte autour de Saint Julien. Après avir célébré service d’intercession devant les reliques de Saint Julien, l’ensemble des pélerins les ont vénérées ainsi que son icône écrite par les sœurs du Monastère orthodoxe russe de la Mère de Dieu Znaménié. Nous avons terminé par la visite de la chapelle Saint Michel dans la Basilique où l’on trouve là encore une fois de magnifiques fresques représentant le monde céleste autour du Christ dominant le monde infernal.
« Le pèlerinage s’est conclu par la visite du monastère russe de la Mère de Dieu de Znaménié, à Marcenat, où nous a accueillis la Mère Higoumène Anastasie. Là nous avons célébré un dernier service d’intercession, devant l’icône Notre Dame du Signe, avant de regagner Lyon. Gloire à Dieu pour ce pélérinage qui nous a réunis sous l’égide de l’Archange saint Michel, considéré comme le saint patron de la France ! »
