It is clear that our sense of time, with respect to eternity in which time does not exist, is but a convention; nevertheless, the Lord has set forth for us in such a course, that, based on our perception of time, being here on earth, we order our special prayers for the newly reposed. This is important, because during these forty days, the preliminary fate of the deceased is being determined: the preliminary judgement of the soul is coming. It is imperative, therefore, that during these forty days we pray intensely for such a soul \u2014 that, for example, we commemorate it on the ninth day, when the soul passes from the vision of the heavenly abodes to be shown the reality of hell; and especially that we pray upon the 40th day. He later became bishop of Cyprus, and the majority of his relics were brought from Constantinople to France in the 13th century (some of his relics remaining in Cyprus).
