At its regular meeting on Tuesday 21st February / 5th March 2024, the Holy Synod of Bishops prayerfully accepted the request for retirement of His Grace Bishop Alexander, who for the previous five years has served as the Bishop of Vevey, Vicar of the Diocese of Great Britain and Western Europe.
Communicating the news to the clergy of the Diocese, the Ruling Hierarch, His Grace Bishop Irenei of London and Western Europe, wrote:
“As many of you are aware, my brother-hierarch Bishop Alexander has long and increasingly been suffering from health difficulties, which have been a source of frustration for him as they severely impair his ability to travel, serve and perform other duties. I am deeply grateful for the prayers that all of you have offered, and continue to offer, for His Grace’s health and healing! It is in light of these afflictions that, in dialogue with me and with my full support, His Grace has petitioned the Holy Synod for retirement on grounds of health, which the Synod has in turn granted, with its prayers.“
Addressing the clergy jointly, Bishop Irenei and Bishop Alexander went on to add: “We wish, together, to stress that this in no way implies a removal from service to the Holy Church on the part of Bishop Alexander, but rather represents an adaptation to circumstance. Bishop Alexander is granted the blessing to continue to serve in the God-protected Parish of St Barbara the Great-Martyr in Vevey, Switzerland … and he has indicated that, following the example of retired Hierarchs in other Dioceses, he would like to continue visiting parishes — for example, for the celebration of Unction in Great Lent, patronal feastdays, etc. — and in other ways to continue to be of assistance in Diocesan life, so far as his health may permit it. This brings us great happiness, and we look forward to calling upon His Grace and beseeching his holy prayers for all of us.”
Bishop Irenei went on to offer his thanks for the prayers and labours of his brother-Hierarch: “I wish to express my deepest gratitude to His Grace Bishop Alexander for all he has done in his five years as our Vicar, and for all he shall surely continue to do for the glory of God in his retired status.”
Concluding their communication together, Bishop Irenei and Bishop Alexander wrote: “We together greet all the Priests, Deacons, monastics and faithful of our Diocese in the unity of Christian love, and with the prayers that we shall continue to offer together for you all. May Almighty God strengthen you all as we enter into the sanctifying period of Great and Holy Lent!”

Священный Архиерейский Синод на своем очередном заседании во вторник 21 февраля / 5 марта 2024 года молитвенно принял прошение об уходе на покой Преосвященнейшего епископа Александра, который в течение предыдущих пяти лет служил епископом Вевейским, викарием Великобританской и Западно-Европейской епархии.
Сообщая эту новость духовенству епархии, Правящий архиерей, Преосвященный епископ Лондонский и Западно-Европейский Ириней, написал:
«Как многие из Вас уже знают, мой собрат-иерарх епископ Александр уже давно и все чаще страдает от проблем со здоровьем, которые были для него источником разочарования, поскольку серьезно ограничивают его способность путешествовать, служить и выполнять другие обязанности. Я глубоко благодарен за молитвы, которые все Вы возносили и продолжаете возносить о здоровье и исцелении Его Преосвященства! Именно в свете этих скорбей, в диалоге со мной и при моей полной поддержке, Его Преосвященство обратился к Священному Архиерейскому Синоду с просьбой об уходе на покой по состоянию здоровья, который Священный Синод своими молитвами предоставил на своем очередном заседании.»
Совместно обращаясь к духовенству, епископ Ириней и епископ Александр добавили: «Мы хотим вместе подчеркнуть, что это никоим образом не означает отстранения от служения Святой Церкви со стороны нашего собрата епископа Александра, а, скорее, представляет собой изменение обстоятельств. Епископу Александру предоставляется благословение продолжать служение в богохраняемом приходе святой великомученицы Варвары в Веве, Швейцария … и он указал, что по примеру отставных иерархов в других епархиях он хотел бы и дальше посещать приходы — например, для совершения Соборования во время Великого поста, для престольных праздников и т. д. — и другими способами продолжать быть помощником в епархиальной жизни, насколько это позволяет его здоровье. Это приносит нам огромное счастье, и мы с нетерпением ждем возможности призвать Его Преосвященство и испросить его святых молитв за всех нас.»
Правящий архиерей выразил благодарность своему брату-епископу за труды и молитвы: «Я хочу выразить глубочайшую благодарность Преосвященному епископу Александру за все, что он сделал за пять лет своего пребывания на посту нашего Викария, и за все, что он обязательно будет продолжать делать во славу Божию в своем новом статусе.»
Завершая свое совместное общение, епископ Ириней и епископ Александр написали: «Мы вместе приветствуем всех священников, диаконов, монашествующих и верующих нашей епархии в единстве христианской любви и молитвами, которые мы и дальше будем вместе возносить за всех Вас. Пусть Всемогущий Бог укрепит всех в преддверии освящающего периода Великого и Святого поста!»

Lors de sa réunion ordinaire du mardi 21 février / 5 mars 2024, le Saint-Synode des Évêques a accepté la demande de la retraite de Son Excellence Mgr Alexandre, qui, depuis cinq ans, a exercé les fonctions d’évêque de Vevey, Vicaire du diocèse de Grande-Bretagne et d’Europe occidentale.
Communiquant la nouvelle au clergé du diocèse, le hiérarque dirigeant, Son Excellence l’évêque Irénée de Londres et d’Europe occidentale, a écrit :
« Comme beaucoup d’entre vous le savent, mon frère-hiérarque, Mgr Alexandre, souffre depuis longtemps et de plus en plus de problèmes de santé, qui sont pour lui une source de tristesse car ils nuisent gravement à sa capacité de voyager, de célébrer et d’accomplir d’autres tâches. Je suis profondément reconnaissant pour les prières que vous avez tous offertes et que vous continuez d’offrir pour la santé et la guérison de Son Excellence, notre cher Vladyka Alexandre ! C’est à la lumière de ces afflictions que, en dialogue avec moi et avec mon plein soutien, Son Excellence a demandé au Saint-Synode la retraite pour raisons de santé, que le Synode a à son tour accordée, avec ses prières. »
S’adressant conjointement au clergé, Mgr Irénée et Mgr Alexander ont ajouté : « Nous souhaitons souligner, ensemble, que cela ne signifie en aucun cas que notre frère Mgr Alexandre quitte le service de la Sainte Eglise, mais plutôt une adaptation aux nouvelles circonstances. Son Excellence reçoit la bénédiction de continuer à servir dans la paroisse protégée par Dieu de la Mégalo-martyre Sainte Barbara à Vevey, en Suisse … et il a indiqué qu’à l’instar des hiérarques retraités d’autres diocèses de notre Eglise, il aimerait continuer à visiter les paroisses — par exemple, pour la célébration du Sacrement de l’Onction pendant le Grand Carême, pour les fêtes patronales, etc. — et, plus généralement, poursuivre son assistance dans la vie diocésaine, dans la mesure où sa santé le permet. Cela nous apporte un grand bonheur et nous sommes impatients de faire appel à son Excellence et d’implorer ses saintes prières pour nous tous. »
L’évêque dirigeant a transmis ses remerciements pour le travail et les prières de son frère-évêque : « Je souhaite exprimer ma plus profonde gratitude à Son Excellence Mgr Alexandre pour tout ce qu’il a fait au cours de ces cinq années en tant que Vicaire, et pour tout ce qu’il continuera sûrement à faire pour la Gloire de Dieu dans son statut de retraité. »
En conclusion de leur communication commune, Mgr Irénée et Mgr Alexander ont écrit : « Nous saluons ensemble tous les prêtres, diacres, moines et fidèles de notre diocèse dans l’unité de l’amour chrétien et avec les prières que nous continuerons à offrir ensemble pour vous tous. Que Dieu Tout-Puissant vous fortifie tous alors que nous entrons ensemble dans la période sanctifiante du Grand et Saint Carême ! »
