6 / 19 JANUARY 2025: The Feast of Theophany was marked in the north of England with the baptism of six catechumens and the blessing of the Mersey River.
On the eve of the Feast, pilgrims from the London Cathedral Youth Group journeyed to Liverpool to participate in the Holy Feast. Gathering on Saturday morning in the church of the Grand Duchess St Elisabeth in Wallasey, they joined members of the local parish to unite in prayer for six catechumens receiving the illumination of Holy Baptism — three from St Elisabeth’s Parish, and three from the Cathedral community.
The Feast of Theophany being one of the traditional days for the baptism of adult converts to the Faith, the sacred mystery took place in Wallasey in the context of a baptismal Liturgy, and made use of the Parish’s newly-constructed font for adult baptisms. In this manner, the newly-illumined were able to receive Holy Communion immediately after their baptism, still wearing their baptismal robes.
The baptismal Liturgy of the Eve having been served by Archpriest Paul Elliot and Priest Justin Venn, the All-Night Vigil was then served in the evening, beautifully sung by the parish choir supplemented by visitors. On Sunday morning, the Feast of Theophany itself, the newly-illumined gathered once more in St Elisabeth’s, and together with its large community of local faithful participated in the Great Blessing of the Waters after the festal Divine Liturgy.
Later in the day, a number of the faithful journeyed to the banks of the Mersey Estuary for the blessing of the waters there, some of the more sturdy of whom joined Archpriest Paul in the waters of the Mersey to joyfully greet the Feast of the Theophany. At the conclusion of the day’s liturgical festivities, both pilgrims and local faithful partook of the uniquely English custom of rounding off the day with ‘fish and chips’ at a local establishment.

6 / 19 ЯНВАРЯ 2025 г.: На севере Англии праздник Богоявления был ознаменован крещением шести оглашенных и освящением реки Мерси.
В канун праздника паломники из молодежной группы Лондонского кафедрального собора отправились в Ливерпуль, чтобы принять участие в святом торжестве. В субботу утром они собрались в храме святой великой княгини Елизаветы в Уолласи, где присоединились к местным прихожанам, чтобы вместе молиться за шестерых оглашенных, принимающих таинство Крещения — трое из прихода святой Елизаветы и трое из соборной общины.
Праздник Богоявления, являясь одним из традиционных дней для крещения взрослых новообращенных, был отмечен совершением таинства Крещения в контексте Божественной литургии, в специально построенной для взрослых купели. Таким образом, новопросвещенные смогли сразу после своего крещения приступить к Святому Причащению, оставаясь в своих крещальных одеждах.
Крещальную литургию в Навечерие праздника совершили протоиерей Павел Эллиот и священник Джастин Венн. Вечером состоялось всенощное бдение, которое прекрасно исполнил приходской хор, усиленный гостями. В воскресное утро, в сам праздник Богоявления, новопросвещенные вновь собрались в храме святой Елизаветы и вместе с многочисленными местными верующими приняли участие в великом освящении воды после праздничной Божественной литургии.
Позже в тот же день некоторые верующие отправились к берегам эстуария реки Мерси для совершения чина освящения вод. Самые выносливые из них присоединились к протоиерею Павлу в водах реки, чтобы с радостью встретить праздник Богоявления. Завершились торжественные мероприятия дня, как и положено по английскому обычаю, трапезой из рыбы с картофелем фри в местном заведении.
