The divine mystery of General Unction is served once per year in the life of the Orthodox Christian, during the season of Great and Holy Lent, prior to Pascha. This special service is a modification of the rite of Unction otherwise served at the sick-bed of someone suffering a grave illness; on this annual occasion we acknowledge that we are all sick with the illness of sin which affects both our spiritual and physical lives, and the Church bestows healing anointing with consecrated oil ‘for the remission of sins and the healing of soul and body.’
Unction is a Sacrament of the Church, and therefore this anointing is partaken of only by Orthodox Christians; moreover, since it is intimately tied to confession, those who wish to be anointed at this rite must make a confession of their sins before their priest within the days immediately preceding the sacrament (and only those of confessing age are anointed at this service: younger children are not accountable for their errors in the same way as adults and thus do not receive anointing ‘for the remission of sins’). Additionally, the sacrament is ‘fulfilled’ in our participation in the Eucharist, and for this reason those who are anointed at the General Unction service must strive to attend the next celebration of the Divine Liturgy at their parish and receive there the Holy Gifts. In our Church Abroad the service of General Unction is presided over by a Bishop, and thus to make the service accessible over the extent of the large territory of our Diocese our hierarchs travel during Great Lent to celebrate the office in many places. Below, please find the schedule of Unction services for the current year. Please be reminded that each individual partakes of this sacrament only once per year, and thus it is not appropriate to participate in the service at multiple parishes.
Also, on account of wrong practices encountered elsewhere, we point out that the sacramental oil from the Unction service is never taken home by the faithful, nor is it reserved in the parishes for anointing at other times: to be anointed with this oil, it is necessary to be present and to participate in the Unction service itself.

Божественное таинство Соборования в жизни православного христианина совершается один раз в году в период Святого Великого Поста, до праздника Пасхи. Это особое богослужение является разновидностью Таинства, которое в определенных случаях также совершается у постели больного, страдающего тяжелым заболеванием; в случае же великопостного ежегодного Соборования мы исходим из осознания, что все мы заражены недугом греха, который затрагивает как нашу духовную, так и физическую жизнь, поэтому Церковь дарует каждому исцеление посредством помазания освященным елеем «для прощения грехов и во исцеление души и тела».
Елеопомазание – это Таинство Церкви, и поэтому участие в нем принимают только православные христиане; более того, поскольку оно тесно связано с таинством Исповеди, те, кто желает быть помазанным освященным елеем, должны исповедаться перед своим духовником непосредственно перед совершением Елеопомазания (на Соборовании помазываются только взрослые: младенцы до семилетнего возраста не несут ответственности за свои грехи подобно взрослым и, следовательно, не имеют необходимости собороваться «для прощения грехов»). Кроме того, Таинство становится «полноценно действующим» после нашего участия в Евхаристии, и по этой причине те, кто елеопомазан на Соборовании, должны стараться в своем приходе посетить следующую Божественную литургию и принять Святые Дары. В нашей Зарубежной Церкви совершение Соборования возглавляется Епископом, и, таким образом, чтобы сделать Таинство доступным для обширной территории нашей епархии, наши Иерархи путешествуют во время Великого поста, чтобы совершить его во многих местах. Ниже вы найдете расписание Соборований в текущем году. Напоминаем, что каждый принимает участие в этом Таинстве только один раз в году, и поэтому неуместно участвовать в Елеосвящении на нескольких приходах.

Dans la vie d’un Chrétien orthodoxe, le divin mystère de la Grande Onction est célébré une fois par an avant Pâques , durant la période du Saint et Grand Carême. Cet office bien particulier est une version modifiée du rite de l’Onction qui est par ailleurs célébré au chevet de personnes gravement malades. Ainsi, lors de la Grande Onction annuelle, nous reconnaissons que nous sommes tous malades — malades du péché, qui affecte physiquement et spirituellement nos vies. Ainsi, l’Église nous accorde la guérison en nous oignant d’huile consacrée “pour la rémission des péchés et la guérison de l’âme du corps”.
L’Onction étant un Sacrement de l’Église, seuls les Chrétiens Orthodoxes peuvent y prendre part. Il est en outre intimement lié à la Confession, aussi ceux qui souhaitent recevoir l’Onction doivent-ils aller se confesser auprès de leur prêtre dans les jours qui précédent immédiatement ce sacrement (et donc les enfants qui ne sont pas encore en âge de se confesser aussi ne sont pas encore en âge de participer au rite de l’Onction; en effet, les enfants en bas âge n’étant pas tenus pour responsables de leurs fautes au même titre que les adultes, ils ne reçoivent pas l’Onction “pour la rémission des péchés”). Enfin, le Sacrement de l’Onction va “s’accomplir” dans notre participation à l’Eucharistie; aussi ceux qui auront été oints lors de l’Office de Grande Onction devront-ils faire tout leur possible pour assister à la célébration suivante de la Divine Liturgie dans leur paroisse et y recevoir les Saints Dons. Le Clergé et les Servants d’autel souhaitant se remémorer la forme de ce service peuvent le faire ici.
Dans notre Église de l’Étranger, l’Office de Grande Onction est présidé par un Évêque. Ainsi, pour permettre au plus grand nombre d’en bénéficier sur l’ensemble du territoire de notre Diocèse, nos hiérarques doivent se déplacer durant tout le Grand Carême de manière à célébrer cet Office à divers endroits. Vous voudrez bien trouver ci-dessous le calendrier des Offices de Grande Onction pour cette année. Nous vous prions d’avoir à l’esprit que chaque personne ne peut prendre part à ce sacrement qu’une seule fois par année. Il ne convient donc pas d’y participer plusieurs fois dans des paroisses différentes.
Aussi, en raison de mauvaises pratiques rencontrées ailleurs, signalons que l’huile sacramentelle de l’Onction n’est jamais rapportée par les fidèles, ni réservée dans les paroisses pour l’onction à d’autres moments : être oint de cette huile, il est nécessaire d’être présent et de participer au service d’Onction lui-même.
