On Holy and Great Thursday, 19th April / 2nd May 2024, His Grace Bishop Irenei served the Divine Liturgy in the London Cathedral, followed by the Rite of the Washing of Feet. This special rite commemorates the Lord washing His disciples’ feet at the institution of the Mystical Supper — the communion of His Body and Blood — which is the central theme of Great Thursday.
“He riseth from supper, and laid aside his garments; and took a towel, and girded himself. After that he poureth water into a bason, and began to wash the disciples’ feet, and to wipe them with the towel wherewith he was girded. Then cometh he to Simon Peter: and Peter saith unto him, Lord, dost thou wash my feet? Jesus answered and said unto him, What I do thou knowest not now; but thou shalt know hereafter. Peter saith unto him, Thou shalt never wash my feet. Jesus answered him, If I wash thee not, thou hast no part with me. Simon Peter saith unto him, Lord, not my feet only, but also my hands and my head.” (John 13.4-9)
The Rite of the Washing of Feet is a unique service, performed only by Bishops in their Cathedrals, during which the hierarch divests himself of his liturgical attire and follows the Lord’s example, reminding all that we serve a Lord Who humbled Himself, in order to care in the most intimate way for the needs of His children.

В Святой и Великий Четверг, 19 апреля / 2 мая 2024 года, Его Преосвященство Епископ Ириней отслужил Божественную Литургию в Лондонском кафедральном соборе с чином омовения ног. Этот особый чин является напоминанием того, как Господь омыл ноги Своим ученикам в начале Тайной Вечери — Причащения Его Тела и Крови — являющейся центральным событием Великого Четверга.
« Встал с вечери, снял [с Себя верхнюю] одежду и, взяв полотенце, препоясался. Потом влил воды в умывальницу и начал умывать ноги ученикам и отирать полотенцем, которым был препоясан. Подходит к Симону Петру, и тот говорит Ему: Господи! Тебе ли умывать мои ноги? Иисус сказал ему в ответ: что Я делаю, теперь ты не знаешь, а уразумеешь после. Петр говорит Ему: не умоешь ног моих вовек. Иисус отвечал ему: если не умою тебя, не имеешь части со Мною. Симон Петр говорит Ему: Господи! не только ноги мои, но и руки и голову. » (от Иоанна 13,4-9)
Чин омовения ног является уникальной службой, совершаемой исключительно архиереем, во время которой иерарх снимает с себя литургическое облачение и следует примеру Господа, таким образом напоминая всем, что мы служим Богу, Который смирил Себя чтобы позаботиться о нуждах Своих чад таким сокровенным способом.
