29 JUNE / 12 JULY 2025: On the Feast of the Holy Apostles, the Kazan Icon Parish in Cardiff, Wales, celebrated the Divine Liturgy in Warminster, Wessex — a town across the River Severn from the Parish’s main Welsh home, where it celebrates the Liturgy once monthly as an extension of its parish life for the benefit of those living in the nearby region of south-central England. After the joyful, festal Divine Services, the Wessex faithful and parishioners from South Wales ascended the town’s thirteenth century bell-tower of the Chapel of St Lawrence, for the special rite of the consecration of the bells.
Having been cast and raised to the tower after the sorrowful Protestant reformation, the bells of Warminster would have never been consecrated; but on the occasion of the restoration of the 18th-century clock and refurbishment of the tower, the trustees of the ancient site asked the ROCOR community, which meets there for regular Divine Services under the headship of Hieromonk Mark (Underwood) to celebrate the blessing of the three bells, of which the largest — the ‘town bell’ — was cast a short distance from the chapel in AD 1657.
During the traditional rite of consecration, the bells were named in honour of the Righteous King Alfred the Great, St Aldhelm (the patron of our mission in Warminster), and St Birinus.
After the service, the faithful took turns tolling the newly consecrated King Alfred bell, which will be rung at the solemn moments of our Divine Liturgy, and still rings the town’s curfew at 8 o’clock each evening.
Hieromonk Mark noted of the occasion: ‘It was a great joy for us to mark the Feast with such a unique blessing, which will be an enduring memory for all who gathered around the bells and participated in the celebration of the rite.’ May their tolling during the Divine Services in future draw new multitudes towards the fullness of the Orthodox Faith!
29 ИЮНЯ / 12 ИЮЛЯ 2025 г.: В день памяти святых славных и всехвальных апостолов, приход Казанской иконы Божией Матери в Кардиффе (Уэльс) совершил Божественную литургию в городе Уорминстер (Warminster), Уэссекс — городе по ту сторону реки Северн от главного центра прихода в Уэльсе, где раз в месяц совершается Божественная литургия как продолжение приходской жизни, на пользу живущих в близлежащих областях южно-центральной Англии. По окончании радостного, торжественного богослужения, верующие из Уэссекса и прихожане из Южного Уэльса поднялись на башню XIII века при часовне св. Лаврентия, где был совершен чин освящения колоколов.
Колокола Уорминстера, отлитые и поднятые на башню уже после печальных событий протестантской «реформации», никогда прежде не были освящены; и в связи с восстановлением часов XVIII века и ремонтом башни, попечители этого древнего места обратились к общине Русской Зарубежной Церкви, совершающей здесь богослужения под руководством иеромонаха Марка (Андервуда), с просьбой о совершении чина освящения трех колоколов, из которых самый большой — «городской колокол» — был отлит неподалеку от часовни в 1657 году от Рождества Христова.
Во время традиционного чина освящения колокола были наречены в честь праведного царя Альфреда Великого, святого Алдхельма (небесного покровителя нашей миссии в Уорминстере) и святого Бирина.
По завершении службы верующие поочередно звонили в новоосвящённый колокол святого короля Альфреда, который отныне будет звучать в торжественные моменты Божественной литургии и ежедневно возвещать городской отбой в 8 часов вечера.
Иеромонах Марк отметил по этому случаю: «Для нас было великой радостью отметить праздник столь необыкновенным благословением, которое останется незабвенной памятью для всех, кто собрался у колоколов и участвовал в этом чине». Да привлечет их звон во время богослужений в будущем множество новых душ к полноте Православной веры!
