‘The icon, like the Church, knows no politics, no national interests, no division’: Bishop Irenei and Bishop Nektarije jointly lead prayers before the Kursk-root icon.

FRIDAY 22 NOVEMBER / 5 DECEMBER 2025: During the afterfeast of the Entry of the Theotokos into the Temple, the wonderworking Kursk-root icon was brought from the London Cathedral of the ROCOR to the London Cathedral of the Serbian Orthodox Diocese in the same city, where on Friday evening His Grace Bishop Irenei of London and Western Europe was received by His Grace Bishop Nektarije of the Serbian Orthodox Church, and the two Hierarchs together led services of prayer before the sacred image.
Clergy of both cathedrals united with their Hierarchs in the evening services before the icon, and throngs of faithful filled the large temple. During the services, special prayers were lifted up for an end to the terrible war in Ukraine and for a cessation of bloodshed and restoration of peace there, in the Holy Land, and throughout the world.
At the end of the service, Vladyka Irenei was invited by Vladyka Nektarije to address the faithful with a homily, in which the head of the Diocese of Great Britain and Western Europe gave thanks to the Mother of God for her mercies, uniting in the present service the faithful of two Orthodox churches that have been bound together in fraternal love for over a century. ‘When our forebears in faith in the ROCOR left Russia after the revolution in 1917 and began the life of the Church Abroad,’ said the Bishop, ‘they did so while bearing with them this very icon that now stands enshrined in the middle of this beautiful Cathedral. Understanding their responsibility and mission as the autonomous continuation of pre-revolutionary Russian Orthodoxy in the Diaspora, free from political and social issues that oppressed both their homeland and so many parts of the world, they ever trusted that the Mother of God would sustain them in that life and sacred work. It brings us tremendous joy, and in fact humbles us greatly, that we, their very unworthy descendants, today stand before this same icon, as more than a century later we continue that mission of peaceful, free proclamation of the Orthodox Faith in a complex and often terrifying world.
’This icon, beloved of faithful the world over, represents our unity in the Faith of the Church,’ continued Bishop Irenei. ‘She knows no politics, no national interests, no worldly ideologies, no secular causes or social movements. So we must strive in all ways to do, and to be, the same.’ His Grace then paused, then added with feeling: ‘I know that there is a particular hardship now amongst many of our flocks, as sorrowful world events cause misinformed persons to view our sacred faith askance, and even misrepresent and attack it. If some in the present day seek to use the Church, even the Faith itself, for political ends, to misrepresent her clergy as being political activists or linked to governmental interests, what can we say except to forgive even these, who by these characterisations commit such wrongs, for the sake of the love shown to us by the Mother of God. For ourselves, we know that we answer to no power except God’s; we honour no Kingdom but that which is the Lord’s. As we gaze upon this sacred image of the Mother of our Saviour, the King of Peace, we continue our tireless prayer that, through her intercessions, His Peace will yet reign in this world — that oppression will cease, warfare will cease, bloodshed and persecutions will cease, “nationalism” will decrease and the love of God will increase; for it is this that binds all men and unites them as true brothers and sisters, now and forever.’
At the conclusion of the services, His Grace Bishop Nektarije warmly greeted all the faithful, and Vladyka Irenei, and expressed his heartfelt joy that all were united in veneration of the Mother of God.
After then spending time greeting the faithful personally, the Hierarchs, clergy and members of the communities enjoyed a fraternal meal together.

ПЯТНИЦА, 22 НОЯБРЯ / 5 ДЕКАБРЯ 2025 г.: В дни попразднства Введения во храм Пресвятой Богородицы чудотворная Курско-коренная икона была принесена из Лондонского кафедрального собора РПЦЗ в Лондонский кафедральный собор Сербской Православной Епархии в том же городе. В пятничный вечер Его Преосвященство епископ Лондонский и Западно-Европейский Ириней был встречен Его Преосвященством епископом Нектарием Сербской Православной Церкви, и два архиерея совместно возглавили молитвенные последования пред священным образом.
Духовенство обоих кафедральных соборов соединилось со своими архипастырями в вечерних богослужениях перед иконой, и огромные толпы верующих наполнили обширный храм. Во время богослужения были вознесены особые молитвы о прекращении несправедливой войны на Украине, о прекращении кровопролития и восстановлении мира — там, на Святой Земле и по всему миру.
По окончании богослужения владыка Ириней был приглашен владыкой Нектарием обратиться к верующим с поучением, в котором глава Великобританской и Западно-Европейской епархии возблагодарил Божию Матерь за ее милости, вновь соединяющие в настоящем богослужении верующих двух православных церквей, связанных узами братской любви уже более ста лет. «Когда наши предки в вере в РПЦЗ покидали Россию после революции 1917 года и начинали жизнь Церкви за границей, — сказал архиерей, — они делали это, неся с собой этот самый образ, который ныне поставлен в центре этого прекрасного кафедрального собора. Осознавая свою ответственность и свое служение как самоуправляемого продолжения дореволюционного русского Православия в диаспоре, свободного от политических и социальных проблем, угнетавших и их родину, и столь многие части мира, они всегда уповали, что Божия Матерь укрепит их в этой жизни и святом труде. Мы испытываем огромную радость и даже глубокое смирение перед тем, что мы, весьма недостойные их потомки, сегодня стоим пред той же самой иконой, продолжая — более чем столетие спустя — это служение мирного, свободного благовестия Православной Веры в сложном и нередко пугающем мире.
«Этот образ, любимый верующими по всему миру, являет наше единство в Вере Церкви, — продолжил владыка Ириней. — Она не знает ни политики, ни национальных интересов, ни мирских идеологий, ни общественных движений. И мы должны стремиться во всем поступать так же и быть такими же». Затем архиерей сделал паузу и с чувством добавил: «Я знаю, что ныне среди многих наших паств есть особые трудности: скорбные мировые события побуждают людей, недостаточно сведущих, смотреть косо на нашу святую Веру, а подчас и искажать и нападать на нее. Если некоторые ныне стремятся использовать Церковь, даже саму Веру, в политических целях, искажая образ ее духовенства, представляя его политическими активистами или связанными с государственными интересами, — что нам можно сказать, кроме как простить даже этих, совершающих такие неправды, ради любви, явленной нам Божией Матерью. Мы же знаем, что отвечаем не перед какой-либо властью, кроме Божией; чтим не иное Царство, кроме того, которое есть Господне. Взирая на этот священный образ Матери нашего Спасителя, Царя-Миротворца, мы продолжаем неустанно молиться, чтобы по ее предстательству вновь воцарился мир в этом мире — чтобы прекратилось угнетение, прекратились войны, прекратились кровопролития и гонения, чтобы уменьшилось “национализм” и умножилась любовь Божия; ибо именно она связывает всех людей и делает их истинными братьями и сестрами — ныне и всегда».
По завершении богослужений Преосвященный епископ Нектарий сердечно приветствовал всех верующих и владыку Иринея и выразил свою искреннюю радость о том, что все были объединены в поклонении Пресвятой Богородице.
После личного общения архиереев с верующими архиереи, духовенство и члены общин разделили между собою братскую трапезу.
