To the Venerable Clergy, God-Loving Monastics and Pious Faithful, Children of the Diocese of Great Britain and Western Europe
Dear in Christ, Fathers, Brothers and Sisters:
As we progress through the sanctifying period of Great and Holy Lent, I write to offer my encouragement in this annual period of ascesis and purification. May the Lord of compassion and tenderness, Who desires all to depart from sin and to embrace, through humble repentance, the Life of Truth, be with us all in these sacred and soul-profiting days!
I urge each member of the pious Christian flock in these God-preserved lands of Europe and the British Isles to enter deeply into the spiritual focus of these present days. I have received great comfort in seeing the enormous numbers of faithful that have filled our churches during the beautiful Divine Services of the first weeks of Lent: may this impetus continue in the weeks ahead, and may it be joined by a serious attentiveness to our fasting, our practice of almsgiving and mutual forgiveness, and the development of the inward yearning to draw ever more deeply into the mystery of the Life in Christ.
That the times in which we live are perilous is known to all. The evil of war — which is always and ever a manifestation of human sinfulness — not only continues, but seems to be spreading. I call upon all our clergy and faithful to remember that Lent is traditionally a period expressly dedicated to almsgiving, and that in these weeks we must redouble our dedication to those being so unjustly harmed and persecuted in the appalling wars taking place in Ukraine and Gaza. Let every parish — and indeed every individual Christian — work tirelessly to provide aid in whatever way is possible: support the work of our food bank in London, which delivers food to Ukrainian refugees and others in need; support the works of the Geneva Cathedral to provide concrete help to refugees in that city; support the undertakings of various parishes and their sisterhoods to raise funds to support those suffering in the Holy Land. Do whatever you can to ‘clothe the naked and feed the hungry’ as our Lord has commanded us (cf. Matthew 25.35-45).
Above, I call upon each and all to stand firmly within our inheritance as the Church Abroad, which was founded in a time of agonising political strife and war, and has lived through such tragedies before. In the more than a century that we have existed in our autonomy, since by God’s Providence the sorrowful Russian Revolution gave rise to the independent existence of our self-governing Synodal life across the world, our saintly hierarchs and primates have reminded us that we do and must live in the freedom of the Church: we follow no political ideology, we identify with no nationalist cause, we conscience no subordination of the Gospel or the Church to any worldly agenda. The only Kingdom by which we are governed is the Kingdom of God; we are the diaspora, ‘scattered throughout the world’, not of any worldly empire or State, but of that sacred and divine Kingdom. As the Head of the Ukrainian Orthodox Church has recently reminded us, the only world we seek to build is God’s world, guided by His love. Remember this, my dear brothers and sisters! Remember, in this period of evil human warfare, that there is one war that we can call holy, and this is the internal spiritual war waged against sin in the human heart. This is the battle of our Lenten moment. May we rise to the challenge, defeat the sin in ourselves, and become the causes of peace and healing in the world.
May God give each of you strength and consolation in these holy days, and may we soon together arrive at the Holy Resurrection of Christ. Assuring each of you of my unworthy prayers, and zealously coveting yours,

Дорогие во Христе отцы, братья и сестры!
По мере того, как мы проходим поприще освящающего периода Великого и Святого Поста, я отравляю это послание, чтобы выразить свою поддержку в ежегодном периоде аскетического делания и очищения. Да пребудет со всеми вами в эти священные и душеполезные дни Господь сострадания и умиления, желающий всем отступить от греха и принять через смиренное покаяние Жизнь Истины!
Я призываю каждого члена благочестивой православной паствы богохранимых стран Западной Европы и Британских островов глубоко проникнуть в духовное средоточие насущных дней. Я получил большое утешение, видя огромное количество верующих, наполнивших наши храмы во время прекрасных богослужений первых недель Великого поста. Пусть это побуждение сохранится и в предстоящие седмицы, и да присовокупится к нему глубокомысленное внимание к нашему великопостному говению, к нашей практике милостыни и взаимного прощения, а также к развитию внутреннего устремления все глубже и проницательнее погружаться в тайну Жизни во Христе.
Всем известно, что времена, в которые мы живем, тягостные. Зло войны, всегда и неизменно являющееся проявлением человеческой греховности, не только продолжается, но и, кажется, не имеет видимого конца. Я призываю все наше духовенство и верующих помнить, что Великий пост традиционно является периодом, специально посвященным милостыне, и что в эти недели мы должны удвоить нашу преданность тем, кто так несправедливо пострадал и преследуется в ужасных войнах, происходящих в Украине и в секторе Газа. Пусть каждый приход — и каждый отдельный христианин — неустанно трудится, чтобы оказать помощь страждущим любым возможным способом. Поддержим работу нашего продовольственного банка в Лондоне, который доставляет еду украинским беженцам и другим обездоленным; поможем трудам Женевского собора по оказанию конкретной помощи перемещенным лицам в этом городе; будем содействовать начинаниям различных приходов и их сестричеств по сбору средств для соучастия нуждающимся на Святой Земле. Делайте все возможное, чтобы «одеть нагих и накормить голодных», как повелел наш Спаситель Христос (ср. Мф. 25:35-45).
Особенно я призываю всех и каждого твердо стоять на защите нашего наследия Зарубежной Церкви, которая была основана во время мучительных политических распрей и войны и уже переживала подобные трагедии. За более чем столетие нашего существования, с тех пор как Промыслом Божьим скорбная русская революция породила самостоятельное существование нашей самоуправляемой синодальной жизни во всем мире, наши святые архиереи и Первоиерархи напоминали нам, что мы и должны жить в свободной Церкви: мы не следуем никакой политической идеологии, мы не отождествляем себя ни с какими националистическими идеями, мы отрицаем подчинение Евангелия или Церкви какой-либо мирской повестке дня. Единственное Царство, которым мы управляемся, — это Царство Божие; мы — «рассеяние, разбросанное по всему миру», принадлежащее не какой-то мирской империи или государству, но этому священному и Божественному Царству. Как недавно напомнил нам Предстоятель Украинской Православной Церкви, единственный мир, который мы стремимся построить, — это мир Божий, руководимый Его любовью. Помните об этом, мои дорогие братья и сестры! Помните, что в этот период злой человеческой войны есть одна война, которую мы можем назвать подлинно священной, и это внутренняя духовная война, ведущаяся против греха в человеческом сердце. Это настоящая духовная брань нынешнего великопостного периода. Давайте же примем вызов, победим грех в себе и станем причиной мира и исцеления во всем мире!

Chers Pères, Frères et Sœurs :
Alors que nous progressons dans la période sanctifiante du Grand et Saint Carême, j’écris pour vous offrir mes encouragements dans cette période annuelle d’ascèse et de purification. Que le Seigneur de compassion et de tendresse, Qui désire que tous s’éloignent du péché et embrassent, par une humble repentance, la vie de Vérité, soit avec nous tous en ces jours sacrés et bénéfiques pour l’âme !
J’exhorte chaque membre du pieux troupeau chrétien de ces terres préservées par Dieu d’Europe et des îles britanniques à s’immerger profondément dans l’orientation spirituelle de nos jours présents. J’ai reçu un grand réconfort en voyant le nombre énorme de fidèles qui ont rempli nos églises lors des beaux services divins des premières semaines du Carême : que cet élan se poursuive dans les semaines à venir, et qu’il soit accompagné d’une attention sérieuse à notre jeûne, notre pratique de l’aumône et du pardon mutuel, et le développement du désir intérieur de s’immerger toujours plus profondément dans le mystère de la Vie en Christ.
Chacun sait que les temps dans lesquels nous vivons sont périlleux. Le fléau de la guerre — qui est toujours et à jamais une manifestation du péché humain — non seulement continue, mais semble se propager. J’appelle tout notre clergé et nos fidèles à se rappeler que le Carême est traditionnellement une période expressément consacrée à l’aumône, et qu’au cours de ces semaines, nous devons redoubler de dévouement envers ceux qui sont si injustement blessés et persécutés dans les guerres épouvantables qui ont lieu en Ukraine et à Gaza. Que chaque paroisse — et en fait chaque chrétien — travaille sans relâche pour fournir de l’aide de toutes les manières possibles : soutenez le travail de notre banque alimentaire à Londres, qui livre de la nourriture aux réfugiés ukrainiens et à d’autres personnes dans le besoin ; soutenez les travaux de la Cathédrale de Genève pour apporter une aide concrète aux réfugiés dans cette ville ; soutenez les efforts des différentes paroisses et de leurs sestrichestva pour récolter des fonds pour soutenir ceux qui souffrent en Terre Sainte. Faites tout ce que vous pouvez pour « vêtir ceux qui sont nus et nourrir ceux qui ont faim » comme notre Seigneur nous l’a commandé (cf. Matthieu 25.35-45).
Ci-dessus, j’appelle chacun et chacune à rester fermement fidèle à notre héritage en tant qu’Église à l’étranger, qui a été fondée à une époque de conflits politiques et de guerres atroces, et qui a déjà vécu de telles tragédies. Depuis plus d’un siècle que nous existons dans notre autonomie, depuis que, par la Providence de Dieu, la douloureuse Révolution russe a donné naissance à l’existence indépendante de notre vie synodale autonome à travers le monde, nos saints hiérarques et primats nous ont rappelé que nous devons vivre dans la liberté de l’Église : nous ne suivons aucune idéologie politique, nous ne nous identifions à aucune cause nationaliste, nous n’avons conscience d’aucune subordination de l’Évangile ou de l’Église à un quelconque agenda mondain. Le seul Royaume par lequel nous sommes gouvernés est le Royaume de Dieu ; nous sommes la diaspora, « dispersée à travers le monde », non d’un empire ou d’un État mondain, mais de ce Royaume sacré et divin. Comme nous l’a récemment rappelé le chef de l’Église orthodoxe ukrainienne, le seul monde que nous cherchons à construire est celui de Dieu, guidé par son amour. Souvenez-vous-en, mes chers frères et sœurs ! Rappelez-vous, en cette période de guerre humaine perverse, qu’il existe une guerre que nous pouvons qualifier comme « sainte », et c’est la guerre spirituelle interne menée contre le péché dans le cœur humain. C’est la bataille de notre moment de Carême. Puissions-nous relever le défi, vaincre le péché en nous et devenir les causes de la paix et de la guérison dans le monde.
Que Dieu donne à chacun de vous force et consolation en ces jours saints, et puissions-nous bientôt arriver ensemble à la Sainte Résurrection du Christ. Assurant chacun de vous de mes indignes prières, et convoitant avec zèle les vôtres,
