29 APRIL / 12 MAY 2025: The following report has been received from the Parish of St John the Merciful in Lyon, France:

With the blessing of our Bishop Irenei of London and Western Europe, the Parish of Saint John the Merciful in Lyon undertook a wondrous pilgrimage to Georgia from the 23rd to the 31st of May 2025. The journey was superbly organised by David Abuladze in Georgia, together with Deacon Gabriel Gigauri and his wife Mariam from the Lyon Parish in France, and was led by our Rector, Archpriest Quentin de Castelbajac. Around twenty faithful participated in this pilgrimage during the radiant days of the Paschal season.

Following visits to the monasteries of Old and New Shuamta, the first three days allowed us to venerate and pray within the glorious monastic houses of Kakheti in the eastern region of the country, walking in the footsteps of the renowned Thirteen Assyrian Fathers, who in the sixth century strengthened the Orthodox faith and monastic life in Georgia: the tomb of St Zenon at the Church and Academy of Ikalto; St Abibos at the Monastery of Nekresi; the tomb of St Joseph at the Monastery of Alaverdi; the tombs of St David and his disciples, Saints Lucian and Dodo, in the awe-inspiring mountain-hewn monastery of the Gareji desert; the tomb of Saint Anthony at the Monastery of Martkopi. And, thanks be to God, we were also granted to serve an office of supplication (a moleben) at the tomb of Saint Nino, Equal-of-the-Apostles and Enlightener of Georgia, at the Monastery of Bodbe.

On the following two days, we were in Tbilisi and its environs. Fathers Quentin and Gabriel concelebrated the Divine Liturgy of Bright Saturday, presided over by Archpriest Symeon at the Sioni Cathedral of the Dormition, in the presence of His Grace Bishop Gregory of Tsalka. At the conclusion of the service, the pilgrims were blessed to venerate the precious relics of the Holy Apostle Thomas, the Cross of Saint Nino, and the miraculous Iveron Icon of the Mother of God, and to be anointed with oil from her lamp. Later that day, we toured the city and prayed at the Church of Metekhi, which contains the tomb of the Holy Queen and Martyr Shushanik; and, on the opposite bank of the river, in the capital’s most ancient church — Anchiskhati — and finally in the Russian Church of Saint Alexander Nevsky.

On Thomas Sunday, we rejoiced greatly to participate in the Divine Liturgy at the Church of Saint George, served by our beloved Archpriest Shio Menabde — who had previously laboured zealously for two years in our parish in Lyon. The clergy concelebrated the Divine Liturgy, which concluded with a procession and was followed by a most generous and joyful festive meal, accompanied by traditional Georgian hymns sung by a youth choir of the parish. Thereafter, Father Shio guided us to the Monastery of the Cross (Jvari), and to Svetitskhoveli in Mtskheta — the spiritual heart of Georgia — wherein are found the tomb of Saint Sidonia and the seamless robe of the Lord. We then visited the Monastery of Samtavro, where we venerated the tombs of Saint Gabriel Urgebadze, of the Holy King Mirian and Queen Nana, and prayed at the burning bush and chapel of Saint Nino. An unforgettable day!

Over the next two days, our group travelled north to Kazbegi, amidst the majestic foothills of the Greater Caucasus, where we visited the fortress of Ananuri and the ancient Monastery of the Holy Trinity, perched upon a mountain at Gergeti, as well as the Monastery of Dariali near the Russian border. On the following day, we journeyed into the verdant valley of the Dzama Gorge, where we visited ancient monastic sites such as Kintsvisi and Ortubani, and more recent foundations such as the Monastery of Sarkineti, carved from the rock, and Mzovreti, established in a former fortress upon the site of the martyrdom of thousands slain by the tyrant Tamerlane. These sacred places bear powerful witness to the enduring spiritual vitality of the Georgian people, both past and present.

At length, the final two days of our pilgrimage brought us to the south of the country, to the Turkish frontier in the Lesser Caucasus, where we visited the Hermitage of Saint Seraphim of Sarov in Borjomi, the Green Monastery of Saint George, and the Monastery of Sapara. There, the setting, our conversation with Hierodeacon Elisha who received us, and the monastic singing at Vespers together conveyed to all the fragrant presence of the angelic life of the monastics. On the following day, we concluded our stay with a visit to the extraordinary rock-hewn city of Vardzia, founded by Saint Queen Tamar.

Glory be to God for this grace-filled experience — for this encounter with an Orthodox land and people, guided throughout their history and to the present day by faithfulness to Christ and the innumerable ranks of their martyrs.

Christ is risen! He is risen, indeed!

По благословению епископа Лондонского и Западно-Европейского Иринея приход св. Иоанна Милостивого в Лионе совершил дивное паломничество в Грузию с 23 по 31 мая 2025 года. Поездка была превосходно организована Давидом Абуладзе в Грузии совместно с диаконом Гавриилом Гигаури и его супругой Марией из лионского прихода, и возглавлена настоятелем прихода, протоиереем Квентином де Кастельбажаком. Около двадцати верующих приняли участие в этом паломничестве в светозарные дни Пасхального периода.

После посещения монастырей Старой и Новой Шуамты, в первые три дня мы имели возможность молиться и поклониться в славных монастырях Кахетии, восточной области страны, проходя стопами знаменитых Тринадцати Сирийских Отцов, укрепивших в VI веке православную веру и монашеское делание в Грузии: мощи святого Зинона — в академии и храме Икалто; святого Авивоса — в монастыре Некреси; святого Иосифа — в монастыре Алаверди; святых Давида и его учеников, преподобных Лукиана и Додо, — в величественном пещерном монастыре Горе Джвари; преподобного Антония — в монастыре Марткопи. И, слава Богу, нам также было даровано совершить молебен у гробницы святой равноапостольной Нины, Просветительницы Грузии, в монастыре Бодбе.

В последующие два дня мы находились в Тбилиси и его окрестностях. Отцы Квентин и Гавриил сослужили Божественную литургию в Светлую Субботу, которую возглавил протоиерей Симеон в Успенском соборе Сиони, в присутствии Преосвященного епископа Григория из Цалка. По завершении службы паломники были удостоены поклониться святым мощам апостола Фомы, Кресту святой Нины и чудотворной Иверской иконе Божией Матери, а также были помазаны елеем из лампады пред иконой. В тот же день мы посетили храм Метехи с гробницей святой мученицы царицы Шушаник; затем — древнейшую церковь столицы, Анчисхати, и Русскую церковь святого Александра Невского.

В Фомину неделю мы с великой радостью приняли участие в Божественной литургии в храме святого великомученика Георгия, которую совершил наш возлюбленный протоиерей Шио Менабде — много потрудившийся в течение двух лет в нашем приходе в Лионе. Литургия завершилась крестным ходом и была продолжена братской трапезой, сопровождаемой пением традиционных грузинских гимнов в исполнении молодёжного хора прихода. После этого отец Шио повёл нас к монастырю Креста (Джвари), а затем в Светицховели в Мцхете — духовное сердце Грузии — где пребывают гробница святой Сидонии и нерукотворная риза Господа. Мы также посетили монастырь Самтавро, где поклонились гробницам святого Гавриила Ургебадзе, святого царя Мириана и царицы Наны, а также помолились у Неопалимой купины и в часовне святой Нины. Это был незабвенный день!

В течение следующих двух дней наша группа отправилась на север, в Казбеги, среди величественных предгорий Большого Кавказа. Мы посетили крепость Ананури, древний монастырь Святой Троицы в Гергети, а также монастырь в Дарьяли, близ границы с Россией. На следующий день мы направились в зелёную долину ущелья Дзама, где посетили древние монастыри Кинцвиси и Ортубани, а также новые обители, такие как монастырь Саркинети, высеченный в скале, и Мзоврети — на месте бывшей крепости, где были замучены тысячи православных христиан от руки тирана Тамерлана. Эти святые места свидетельствуют о стойкости и жизненности православной веры в грузинском народе, как в прошлом, так и в настоящем.

Наконец, в последние два дня нашего паломничества мы направились на юг страны, к турецкой границе, в Малый Кавказ, где посетили скит преподобного Серафима Саровского в Боржоми, Зелёный монастырь святого Георгия и монастырь Сапара. Там — благодаря тишине, беседе с иеродиаконом Илией, принявшим нас, и молитве на вечерне под ангельское пение братии — вся атмосфера проникнута была благодатью и духом монашества. В завершение нашего пребывания мы посетили высеченный в скале древний город Вардзиа, основанный святой царицей Тамарой.

Слава Богу за эту исполненную благодати поездку — за это прикосновение к православной земле и народу, ведомым верой ко Христу и неисчислимыми сонмами мучеников Его.
