24 FEBRUARY / 9 MARCH 2025: On the Sunday of the Triumph of Orthodoxy, the first Sunday of Great Lent, the Divine Liturgy at the London Cathedral was followed by the special ‘Rite of Orthodoxy’, celebrated by His Grace Bishop Irenei of London and Western Europe.
Following the conclusion of the Liturgy, the Bishop and concelebrating clergy gathered in the centre of the Cathedral, before the Cross and Gospel, relics, and an array of holy icons — in recognition of the restoration of the icons, from which historical event the Sunday of Orthodoxy takes its origins — and proceeded to celebrate the rite after the long-held custom of the Church Abroad. The special ‘Moleben for the Conversion of Those Who Have Gone Astray’ was served, into which was inserted the Rite of Orthodoxy itself: the proclamation of the ancient and unchanging faith of the Church, the confession of faithful obedience and adherence to the teachings of the Holy Fathers enshrined in the Councils, and the annual memorial of those who have dedicated their lives, across the centuries, to preserving the proclamation of the True Faith in the face of heresy, schism and renovationism — both in the past and in the present.
A particularly potent element of the rite is the episcopal proclamation of the ‘Anathemas’, by which the Ruling Hierarch annually confirms the proclamations of the Holy Councils, which describe the limits of right belief and action, beyond which the faithful must never tread, instead resting ever secure in the true teaching of the Church.
In light of the preponderance of schism and heresy in the present day, this year Bishop Irenei again blessed a shorter version of the rite to be served in parishes across the Diocese. That rite, which does not include the proclamation of the anathemas (which is a strictly episcopal prerogative), contains the the Symbol of Faith as the common confession of Faith of the entire Orthodox Church, and the ancient indication, proclaimed by the Deacon on behalf of all the pious faithful of the Church: ‘This is the Faith of the Apostles! This is the Faith of the Fathers! This is the Orthodox Faith. This Faith confirmeth the universe!’
24 ФЕВРАЛЯ / 9 МАРТА 2025 г.: В первое воскресенье Великого поста, в Неделю Торжества Православия, в кафедральном соборе Рождества Пресвятой Богородицы и Святых Царственных Мучеников в Лондоне Его Преосвященство Ириней, Епископ Лондонский и Западно-Европейский, возглавил как Божественную литургию, так и особый «Чин Православия».
По завершении воскресной Божественной литургии архиерей и сослужащее ему духовенство, собравшись в центре храма пред Крестом и Евангелием, с мощами и множеством святых икон, совершили Чин Православия — в знак исповедания догмата о почитании святых икон, восстановление которого положило начало празднованию Недели Православия. Священнослужители приступили к совершению последования согласно древнему обычаю Русской Зарубежной Церкви. Было совершено особое молебное пение «о обращении заблудших», к которому присоединялся сам Чин Православия. Прозвучало торжественное исповедание древней и неизменной Веры Церкви, выражение единомыслия и верности учению Святых Отцов, запечатленному в догматах Вселенских Соборов. В завершение была пропета «Вечная память» всем тем, кто на протяжении веков посвятил свою жизнь хранению и проповеди Истинной Веры перед лицом ересей, расколов и обновленчества — как в прежние времена, так и в настоящем.
Кульминационным моментом чинопоследования стало архиерейское провозглашение анафем, которым Правящий архиерей ежегодно утверждает догматические определения святых Соборов, ограждающие пределы истинной Веры и предостерегающие верных от заблуждений, дабы они пребывали неуклонно в учении Святой Церкви.
Ввиду множества расколов и ересей, распространяющихся в современном мире, в этом году епископ Ириней вновь благословил краткий вариант чина для совершения в приходах всей епархии. Этот чин, не включающий в себя провозглашение анафем (что является прерогативой исключительно архиерея), содержит Символ Веры — как выражение единого исповедания всей Православной Церкви, а также древнее провозглашение, возвещаемое диаконом от лица всех благочестивых чад Церкви: «Сия Вера Апостольская! Сия Вера Отеческая! Сия Вера Православная! Сия Вера Вселенную утверди!»
