1 / 14 JANUARY 2024: On the Sunday of the Feast of the Circumcision of the Lord and St Basil the Great, which also marks the ‘Old New Year’ (being the first day of January on the Church’s calendar), His Grace Bishop Irenei of London and Western Europe visited the Parish of Christ the Saviour, St Katherine and St Serafim of Sarov in Sanremo, Italy, to celebrate by anticipation the Altar Feast of the parish: the feastday of St Serafim of Sarov, which fell on the next day.

Arriving on Saturday afternoon, Vladyka Irenei was greeted at the porch of the temple by a group of parish children, who offered him the traditional bread and salt. The festal All-Night Vigil was then served, sung with extraordinary beauty by the parish’s choir, under the direction of Ioanna Vasileevna Kiryanchuk. After the evening service, the Bishop met with members of the Parish Council over dinner in the Parish House.

On Sunday morning, His Grace was co-served at the Festal Divine Liturgy by the Rector of the Sanremo Parish, the Very Reverend Archpriest Dionysi Baikov, together with the Reverend Deacon Oleg Petrov, who arrived from the nearby Menton Parish for both the Vigil and the Liturgy. During the Hours preceding the Liturgy, a pious layman of the Menton Parish, Sergei Borisevich Lokhov, was tonsured as a Reader.

A full church of worshippers gathered in honour of the Parish’s heavenly patron, receiving of the Divine Mysteries of Christ and serving a moleben in St Serafim’s honour at the conclusion of the Liturgy. Bishop Irenei then gave a brief homily on the spiritual example of St Serafim, and the importance of approaching our Christian identity not as a matter of ideas and emotions, but as an active life, lived in the attainment of repentance, love, and the Heavenly Kingdom.

A festive lunch was then served in the crypt of the church, with the Bishop, clergy and faithful communing for many hours in fellowship. A special joy was the singing of various carols and songs by the youth of the Parish.

In the evening, His Grace departed for onward travels.

Церковь празднует Обрезание Господне, день святителя Василия Великого, а также «Старый Новый Год» (первый день января по церковному календарю), Преосвященнейший епископ Лондонский и Западно-Европейский Ириней прибыл в приход Христа Спасителя, св. Екатерины и преп. Серафима Саровского в Сан-Ремо, Италия, чтобы возглавить торжества по случаю престольного праздника прихода: дня преподобного Серафима Саровского, который пришелся на понедельник 2/15 января.

Владыку Иринея в субботу после обеда встретила на паперти храма группа приходских детей и предложила ему традиционные хлеб-соль. Затем было совершено праздничное Всенощное Бдение, с необычайной красотой исполненное приходским хором под управлением Иоанны Васильевны Кирьянчук. После вечерней службы за ужином в приходском доме владыка встретился с членами приходского совета.

В воскресенье утром Его Преосвященству за праздничной Божественной литургией сослужили настоятель прихода Сан-Ремо протоиерей Дионисий Байков и диакон Олег Петров, прибывший из близлежащего Ментонского прихода на всенощное Бдение и Божественную Литургию. Во время чтения часов состоялся постриг в чтецы Сергея Борисовича Лохова, благочестивого мирянина ментонского прихода.

Полный храм молящихся собрался в честь небесного покровителя прихода, многие из верующих приобщились Святых Христовых Тайн. По окончании Литургии был совершен молебен в честь преподобного Серафима. Затем епископ Ириней произнес краткую проповедь о духовном примере Саровского подвижника, и о важности подхода к нашей христианской идентичности не как к вопросу идей и эмоций, а как к активной жизни, прожитой в покаянии и любви к Царствию Небесному.

Затем в крипте храма был подана праздничная трапеза, на которой правящий Архиерей, верующие и духовенство беседовали в течение многих часов. Особую радость вызвало искусное исполнение приходской молодежью различных колядок и песен.

Вечером того-же дня Его Преосвященство отправился в дальнейшее путешествие.
