The following homily was preached by His Grace Bishop Irenei of London and Western Europe in the Luxembourg Parish on its Altar Feast of the Holy Apostles Peter and Paul, 29 June / 12 July 2025.

L’homélie suivante a été prononcée par Son Excellence Mgr Irénée, Évêque de Londres et d’Europe Occidentale, dans la paroisse de Luxembourg, à l’occasion de sa fête patronale des saints Apôtres Pierre et Paul, le 29 juin / 12 juillet 2025.
In the Name of the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit:
With thanksgiving in our hearts, today we keep the sacred memory of the holy leaders of the Apostles, the great Sts Peter and Paul, to whom this blessed temple is dedicated. Today the whole Orthodox world rejoices in the keeping of this great Feast at the conclusion of the soul-profiting fast; but here, on this corner of land in the centre of Luxembourg, we give especial thanks. Here, in a world so different from that the Apostles knew in their earthly ministry, the Faith that they proclaimed to the world continues to be lived out. Here, in one of the symbolic centres of Europe, the mission that they began in the regions surrounding the Mediterranean, continues. Here, in languages that neither St Peter nor St Paul knew, their voice resonates two-thousand years later, and the words of their glorification of God continue to speak to a needy world.
To live under the spiritual protection of the Holy Apostles is a wonderful blessing. You know this, living and worshipping here in a temple perpetually dedicated to their honour, in which their holy icons are given constant centrality. Yet the very existence of today’s Feast is a reminder to all Christians that together we are all constantly under the spiritual protection of the Apostles. They are, as we hear in the hymnography of this Feast, the ‘pillars of the Church’ — and this is true not only of St Peter and St Paul, but of the whole Apostolic choir. They are the spiritual supports of the edifice built on the rock of the True Faith; the stonework and beams of the eternal temple of God’s glory in which we are called to salvation.
The Church is Apostolic — something we confess at every Liturgy, as we recite the Symbol of Faith — and this is not a mere historical phenomenon. The Church is Apostolic because, in her, the Apostolic witness remains alive and Apostolic authority continues to govern the lives of those seeking to follow Christ Who commissioned the Apostles and instructed them to bring His voice to all the ends of the earth. Yes, that was long ago and, in worldly terms, the Apostles themselves are long dead; yet from their own testimony (and from all that we ourselves have seen, and understood, and experienced in the Christian life) we know that death has been defeated and even those in the graves are alive in Christ. Thus we know they are with us still, alive even today, present even in this place with us, now. We know they continue to bless and guide and support the Church into which we in our unworthiness are grafted, that we might be joined to their lives and grow closer to the God we all serve.
And the Church is Apostolic, too, because these Apostles truly fulfilled and fulfil the charge given to them by Christ: at their hands, successors were chosen, new men were called and anointed, and the Apostolic mission expanded into the the Church across the whole world, and across history. Even in these difficult latter days, the Hierarchy of the Church receives this grace, and Apostolic hands are laid in our day upon new heads, lifting up Apostolic successors and — through their sacred ministry — new Priests and Deacons that serve in the Altars of the Lord. This is not ancient history: this is our present reality! And those first Apostles surely rejoice today and every day, in the heavenly places, beholding the continuation of the mission to which they so completely gave their earthly lives.
Today St Peter and St Paul stand with us here; and they are surrounded by the other Apostles of that sacred ‘first choir’ that walked with the incarnate Saviour. They are surrounded, too, by the hundreds and thousands that have borne Apostolic rank over the centuries since those days, bearing the grace conveyed by those same first Apostles, and ensuring that never, not for a moment or a fraction of a moment, will the Lord’s Church be left without the sacred guidance and grace He first bestowed on those closest to Him. We are their spiritual sons and daughters, and we stand humbly in their presence as new generations become sons and daughters of our own — all united in the One True Faith, partaking of the One True Cup of the Body and Blood of the One and Only True God.
May we have the blessed intercession of the Apostles as our sure support in this life, and may we rejoice with them that the Apostolic mission of the Church continues unhindered in our day. Let us be joyful in their testimony, confident in their legacy, and devote ourselves to joining our own hands to the great labour of the conversion of the world. Amen!

С благодарением в сердцах наших мы ныне совершаем священную память Первоверховных Апостолов — великих святых Петра и Павла, которым посвящен сей благословенный храм. Сегодня вся полнота Православной Церкви радуется празднованию этого великого торжества, завершающего спасительный пост; но здесь, на сем уголке земли в самом сердце Люксембурга, мы возносим особенно горячую благодарность. Здесь, в мире столь отличном от того, в коем Апостолы совершали земное служение свое, Вера, ими проповеданная вселенной, продолжает быть живой. Здесь, в одном из символических центров Европы, продолжается миссия, ими начатая на берегах Средиземного моря. Здесь, на языках, неведомых ни святому Петру, ни святому Павлу, их глас звучит сквозь две тысячи лет, и слова их прославления Бога продолжают обращаться к миру, алчущему Истины.
Пребывать под духовным покровом святых Апостолов — есть великое благословение. Вы знаете это, живя и непрестанно молясь здесь в храме, посвященном их памяти, где их святые образы находятся в самом центре церковной жизни. И все же сам факт праздника сего напоминает всем христианам, что мы все — постоянно под небесным покровом Апостолов. Они суть, как слышим мы в песнопениях праздника, «столпы Церкви» — и это относится не только к святым Петру и Павлу, но ко всему лику апостольскому. Они — духовные опоры здания, утверждённого на камне Истинной Веры; они — каменная кладка и бревна вечного храма славы Божией, в коем мы призваны ко спасению.
Церковь есть апостольская — мы сие исповедуем за каждой Литургией, произнося «Символ Веры». И это не есть только историческое утверждение. Церковь апостольская потому, что в ней живым и действенным пребывает апостольское свидетельство, и апостольская власть продолжает руководить жизнью тех, кто желает следовать за Христом, который сам призвал Апостолов и повелел им принести глас Его ко всем концам земли. Да, это произошло давно, и, по меркам мира сего, Апостолы уже давно преставились; но из их собственного свидетельства (и из всего того, что мы сами узрели, разумели и пережили в жизни христианской) мы знаем, что смерть побеждена, и даже сущие во гробех живы во Христе. Посему мы ведаем, что они суть с нами и поныне, живы, и здесь, на сем месте, они присутствуют. Мы ведаем, что они продолжают благословлять, наставлять и укреплять Церковь, к коей мы, недостойные, привиты, дабы быть сопричастниками их жизни и приблизиться к Богу, которому все мы служим.
Церковь апостольская и потому, что сами Апостолы исполнили и исполняют поручение, данное им от Христа: рукою их были избраны преемники, призваны и помазаны новые мужи, и апостольская миссия распространилась в Церкови по всему миру и сквозь всю историю. Даже в нынешних последних и трудных днях иерархия Церкви приемлет сию благодать, и апостольская десница возлагается ныне на новые главы, воздвигая преемников апостольских и — через их священное служение — новых пресвитеров и диаконов, совершающих Божественные Таинства в Алтарях Господних. Сие не древняя летопись: сие есть живая наша реальность! И Апостолы первых дней несомненно радуются днесь и во вся дни, в обителях Небесных, видя продолжение служения, которому они посвятили всю земную жизнь свою.
Сегодня святые Петр и Павел предстают с нами здесь; и с ними — иные Апостолы сего священного «первого хора», шествовавшие со воплотившимся Спасителем. С ними — и сотни и тысячи, носивших апостольский сан во веки после тех дней, приявших благодать, восходящую от первых Апостолов, и утверждавших, что никогда, ни на мгновение, Церковь Господня не останется без Священноначалия и благодати, некогда дарованных Им ближайшим ученикам. Мы суть их духовные чада, и стоим с благоговением пред ними, как новые поколения производят духовных сынов и дочерей своих — все соединённые в Единой Истинной Вере, причащающиеся от Единой Чаши Тела и Крови Единого Истинного Бога.
Да будет нам блаженное заступничество Апостолов крепкой опорой в жизни сей, и да возликуем мы с ними о непрестанном продолжении в наши времена апостольской миссии Церкви. Возрадуемся их свидетельству, утвердимся в их наследии и посвятим себя тому, дабы и наши руки присоединились к великому делу обращения и спасения мира. Аминь!
Au Nom du Père, du Fils, et du Saint-Esprit :
Avec un cœur rempli d’action de grâces, nous célébrons aujourd’hui la mémoire sacrée des saints chefs des Apôtres, les glorieux saints Pierre et Paul, auxquels ce temple béni est dédié. En ce jour, le monde orthodoxe entier se réjouit de la célébration de cette grande fête, venant couronner le jeûne sanctifiant de l’âme ; mais ici, en ce coin de terre au cœur du Luxembourg, nous rendons une gratitude toute particulière. Car ici, dans un monde si différent de celui que connurent les Apôtres durant leur ministère terrestre, la Foi qu’ils proclamèrent au monde continue d’être vécue. Ici, en l’un des centres symboliques de l’Europe, se poursuit la mission qu’ils commencèrent autour de la Méditerranée. Ici, dans des langues que ni saint Pierre ni saint Paul ne parlaient, leur voix résonne deux mille ans plus tard, et les paroles de leur glorification de Dieu continuent de parler à un monde en détresse.
Vivre sous la protection spirituelle des saints Apôtres est une bénédiction incomparable. Vous le savez, vous qui vivez et priez dans ce temple perpétuellement dédié à leur honneur, où leurs saintes icônes occupent une place centrale toiujours. Et pourtant, l’existence même de la fête d’aujourd’hui rappelle à tous les chrétiens que nous sommes tous, ensemble, constamment placés sous la protection spirituelle des Apôtres. Ils sont, comme nous l’entendons dans l’hymnographie de la fête, les « colonnes de l’Église » — et cela est vrai non seulement pour saint Pierre et saint Paul, mais pour l’ensemble du chœur apostolique. Ils sont les soutiens spirituels de l’édifice édifié sur le roc de la Véritable Foi ; ils sont les pierres et les poutres du temple éternel de la gloire de Dieu, dans lequel nous sommes appelés au salut.
L’Église est apostolique — c’est ce que nous confessons à chaque Liturgie, lorsque nous proclamons le Symbole de la Foi — et cela n’est point un simple phénomène historique. L’Église est apostolique, parce que, en elle, le témoignage des Apôtres demeure vivant, et l’autorité apostolique continue de gouverner la vie de ceux qui cherchent à suivre le Christ, Lui qui envoya les Apôtres et leur ordonna de porter Sa voix jusqu’aux extrémités de la terre. Certes, cela remonte à longtemps, et dans les termes du monde, les Apôtres eux-mêmes sont morts depuis des siècles ; mais selon leur propre témoignage (et selon tout ce que nous-mêmes avons vu, compris et expérimenté dans la vie chrétienne), nous savons que la mort est vaincue, et que même ceux qui sont dans les tombeaux sont vivants en Christ. Ainsi savons-nous qu’ils sont encore avec nous, vivants aujourd’hui, présents même ici, en ce moment. Nous savons qu’ils continuent de bénir, de guider, et de soutenir l’Église dans laquelle nous, en notre indignité, avons été greffés, afin que nous puissions être unis à leur vie et croître dans la communion du Dieu que tous ensemble nous servons.
Et l’Église est apostolique aussi, parce que ces Apôtres ont véritablement accompli, et continuent d’accomplir, le commandement que le Christ leur donna : de leurs mains furent choisis des successeurs, furent appelés et oints de nouveaux hommes, et la mission apostolique s’est étendue pour devenir l’Église répandue dans le monde entier, à travers les siècles. Même en ces jours difficiles, la hiérarchie de l’Église reçoit cette grâce, et des mains apostoliques sont posées en notre temps sur de nouvelles têtes, élevant de nouveaux successeurs apostoliques et — par leur ministère sacré — de nouveaux prêtres et diacres pour servir aux saints Autels du Seigneur. Il ne s’agit pas d’histoire ancienne : il s’agit de notre réalité présente ! Et les premiers Apôtres se réjouissent assurément, aujourd’hui et chaque jour, dans les lieux célestes, contemplant la continuation de la mission à laquelle ils ont donné jusqu’à leur dernier souffle.
Aujourd’hui, saint Pierre et saint Paul se tiennent ici avec nous ; et ils sont entourés des autres Apôtres de ce saint « premier chœur » qui marchèrent avec le Sauveur incarné. Ils sont entourés aussi des centaines et des milliers d’hommes qui ont porté le rang apostolique depuis ces jours bénis, portant la grâce transmise par ces mêmes premiers Apôtres, et veillant à ce que jamais — non, jamais, fût-ce pour un instant ou une fraction d’instant — l’Église du Seigneur ne soit privée de la guidance sacrée et de la grâce qu’Il conféra d’abord à ceux qui Lui étaient les plus proches. Nous sommes leurs fils et leurs filles spirituels, et nous nous tenons humblement en leur présence, tandis que de nouvelles générations deviennent elles-mêmes les fils et les filles de notre propre génération — tous unis dans l’Unique Vraie Foi, communiant au Seul et Véritable Calice du Corps et du Sang du Seul et Unique Dieu véritable.
Puisse la bienheureuse intercession des saints Apôtres être notre ferme soutien dans cette vie, et puissions-nous nous réjouir avec eux de ce que la mission apostolique de l’Église se poursuit, sans entrave, en notre temps. Réjouissons-nous de leur témoignage, soyons assurés de leur héritage, et consacrons-nous à unir nos propres mains au grand labeur de la conversion du monde. Amen.
