2-3 JULY 2022: His Grace Bishop Irenei of London and Western Europe visited the Memorial Church of St Job and the Church of the Resurrection of Christ, both in the capital of Belgium, on the weekend of the principal feastday of St John the Wonderworker of Shanghai, Brussels and San Francisco, and the Sunday of All Local Saints.
Though intending to arrive on Friday, flight cancellations meant that the bishop was able to arrive in Brussels only on Saturday morning. This did not prevent him, however, from meeting with members of the parish Association and clergy of the Memorial Church in the afternoon, before serving the All-Night Vigil in the church, co-served by Archpriest Léonide Grilikhès and Priest Vassili Orékhoff, upon whom the Bishop bestowed the nabedrennik; and the prayer was accompanied by beautiful singing from the Memorial Parish choir. At the Polyelei of matins, the Magnification was sung for all the saints of Belgium.
On Sunday morning, Vladyka Irenei was greeted at the door of the Resurrection Church, where he headed the Divine Liturgy for the Sunday of All Local Saints, co-served by Archpriest Stefan Weerts. During the Little Entrance of the Liturgy, His Grace bestowed the Jewelled Cross upon Fr Stefan, a Synodal award granted for his many years of diligent and faithful service to the Church Abroad, the Diocese, and multiple parishes.
During his homily, Vladyka called to mind the special focus of this Sunday in the Church Abroad: ‘On this third Sunday after Holy Pentecost,’ he said, ‘we keep the memory of our local saints. We bear witness that the universal activity of the Holy Spirit also takes place at the most local level. We walk, here, today, on ground that has been walked upon by saints of God. Holiness is not some dream of far-off realities, an idea obtainable only by those in some other place or time. Right here, where we live and work, eat and sleep, men and women have followed God with deep ascetic devotion and attained the heights of sanctity.’ His Grace called to mind the example of St John the Wonderworker, whose feast had been celebrated the day before: ‘Yesterday we kept the memory of St John, who is a shining example of this reality. For nearly twelve years he was the Ruling Bishop of our Diocese. He walked along the same streets that we walk; prayed in many of the same temples; preached from the same ambons. He kept the fasts, here where we are now engaged in the fast of the Apostles. He honoured the feasts, here where we, too, honour them. He saw a troubled world, marred by war. He beheld the temptations of worldliness, ecumenist laxity, syncretism, and the increasing abandonment of morality and the adherence to divine Truth — things that we certainly see marking out our lax and decrepit age. And yet, living in the midst of all this, he attained profound holiness. This very land, in such times, produced one of the greatest saints of the Church’s history: who could see into hearts, who defended the faith, who could heal the sick, who could calm the storms of the passions — both in himself, and in others. And he is only one example. We can think of countless others. Perhaps we might call to mind St Alina of Belgium, who lived in the seventh century in Dilbeek, just outside this city. Or the hundreds and even thousands that have been sanctified all around us.’
The preacher concluded: ‘The Church wishes us, in being reminded of this, to be encouraged, so that we do not lose heart. But the Church also wishes us to be spurred to action. It is time to stop making excuses for our weak faith or Orthodox witness, as if it could be stronger if only we lived in a more comfortable Orthodox place, or in less troubled times. This is a temptation of the evil one. We must fortify ourselves with the examples of our forebears, and recognise that God provides us here — and wherever we may be, or wherever we may go — with absolutely everything required to attain the heights of salvation. All that is lacking is our will to be obedient to Him, to follow Him without equivocation, to be bold before the world, and to fight the passions in ourselves.’
Following the Divine Services and congratulations for the newly-decorated Fr Stefan, a banquet was served in the hall of the Resurrection Parish, and Bishop Irenei was able to remain for several hours with the clergy and faithful, discussing spiritual topics and the life of the Church. In the evening, His Grace departed for the airport.

2-3 ИЮЛЯ 2022 г.: В праздник святителя Иоанна Шанхайского, Брюссельского и Сан-Франциского, а также в Неделю всех месточтимых святых преосвященнейший епископ Лондонский и Западно-Европейский Ириней посетил храм-памятник св. праведного Иова Многострадального и приход Воскресения Христова, которые действуют в г. Брюссель – столице Бельгии.
Вместо запланированного визита в пятницу, из-за отмены рейсов управляющий епархией смог прибыть в Брюссель только в субботу утром. Однако это не помешало ему встретиться во второй половине дня перед Всенощным бдением с членами приходской ассоциации и клириками храма-памятника. Вечернее богослужение было совершено Архиереем в сослужении протоиерея Леонида Гриллихеса и иерея Василия Орехова, которого епископ наградил набедренником; и молитва сопровождаясь искусным пением местного приходского хора. На полиелей пропели Величание всем святым Бельгии.
В воскресенье утром владыку Иринея встретили у дверей Воскресенского храма, где он возглавил Божественную литургию в неделю всех месточтимых святых, в сослужении протоиерея Стефана Веэртса. На Малом входе Его Преосвященство вручил отцу Стефану наперстный крест с украшениями — Синодальную награду, преподанную за многолетнее усердное и верное служение Зарубежной Церкви, епархии и ее многочисленным приходам.
В слове проповеди владыка напомнил об особом значении этого воскресенья в Зарубежной Церкви: «В неделю 3-ю по Пятидесятнице, — сказал он, — мы празднуем память наших местных святых. Мы свидетельствуем, что вселенское действие Духа Святого происходит и на местном уровне. Мы ходим здесь, сегодня, по земле, по которой ходили святые Божьи. Святость — это не какая-то мечта о далеких реальностях, идея, доступная только тем, кто находится в каком-то другом пространстве или времени. Именно здесь, где мы живем и работаем, едим и спим, благочестивые мужи и жены с глубоким подвижническим благоговением последовали за Богом и достигали высот святости». Его Преосвященство привел в пример житие святителя Иоанна Шанхайского и Сан-Франциского. «Почти двенадцать лет он был правящим архиереем нашей епархии. Он ходил по тем же улицам, что и мы; молился во многих таких же храмах; проповедовал с этого же амвона. Он соблюдал посты, вот и мы сейчас пребываем в Апостольском посте. Он чтил праздники, здесь, где и мы почитаем их. Он видел неспокойный мир, испорченный войной. Он видел искушения обмищрения, экуменического распутства, синкретизма и возрастающего отхода от нравственности и верности Божественной Истине, — то, что мы, конечно, видим в нашем недужном и зачерствелом времени. И все же, живя среди всего этого, он достиг глубокой святости. Именно эта земля в такие времена произвела на свет одного из величайших святых в истории Церкви: умевшего заглядывать в сердца, защищавшего веру, исцелявшего больных, успокаивавшего бури страстей — и в себе, и у других. И это только один пример. Мы можем привести бесчисленное количество других свидетельств. Например, мы можем вспомнить святую мученицу Алину Бельгийскую, которая жила в VII веке в Дильбеке, недалеко от этого города или сотни и даже тысячи святых окружающих нас».
Проповедник заключил: «Церковь желает, чтобы мы, вспоминая об этом, ободрялись, дабы мы не падали духом. Но Церковь также желает, чтобы мы побуждали себя к действию. Пора перестать оправдываться за нашу слабую веру или православное свидетельство, как будто оно могло бы быть сильнее, если бы мы жили в более благоустроенном православном месте, или в менее смутные времена. Это искушение лукавого. Мы должны укрепить себя примерами наших предков и признать, что Бог дает нам здесь — и где бы мы ни были, и куда бы мы ни пошли — абсолютно все необходимое для достижения высот спасения. Не хватает только нашей воли к послушанию Ему, к неуклонному следованию за Ним, к смелости перед миром и к борьбе со своими страстями».
После богослужения и поздравлений награжденному отцу Стефану, в приходском зале Воскресенского прихода была совершена трапеза, на которой епископ Ириней пребывал несколько часов в общении с духовенством и верующими, обсуждая духовные темы и текущие вопросы церковной жизни. Вечером Его Преосвященство отбыл в аэродром.

2-3 JUILLET 2022 : Son Excellence l’évêque Irénée de Londres et d’Europe occidentale a visité l’église mémorial de S. Job et l’église de la Résurrection du Christ, toutes deux dans la capitale de la Belgique, le week-end de la principale fête de Saint Jean le Thaumaturge m de Shanghai, Bruxelles et San Francisco, et le dimanche de tous les saints locaux.
Bien qu’ayant l’intention d’arriver le vendredi, les annulations de vols ont fait que l’évêque n’a pu arriver à Bruxelles que le samedi matin. Cela ne l’a cependant pas empêché de rencontrer les membres de l’Association paroissiale et du clergé de l’Église de S. Job dans l’après-midi, avant de célébrer les Vigiles dans la paroisse, co-servie par l’archiprêtre Léonide Grilikhès et le prêtre Vassili Orékhoff, à qui l’évêque a conféré le nabedrennik ; et accompagné par de beaux chants de la chorale paroissiale. Au Polyelei de matines, la Magnification a été chantée pour tous les saints de Belgique.
Le dimanche matin, Vladyka Irénée a été accueilli à la porte de l’église de la Résurrection, où il a célébré la Divine Liturgie pour le dimanche de tous les saints locaux, co-servi par l’archiprêtre Stefan Weerts. Au cours de la petite entrée de la Liturgie, Mgr Irénée a décerné la croix décorée au père Stefan, un « nagrada » synodal accordé pour ses nombreuses années de service diligent et fidèle à l’Église à l’étranger, au diocèse et à plusieurs paroisses.
Au cours de son homélie, Vladyka a rappelé le thème particulier de ce dimanche dans l’Église à l’étranger : «En ce troisième dimanche après la Sainte Pentecôte, nous gardons la mémoire de nos saints locaux. Nous venons témoigner que cette activité universelle se déroule aussi au niveau le plus local. Nous marchons, ici, aujourd’hui, sur un terrain qui a été foulé par des saints de Dieu. La sainteté n’est pas un rêve de réalités lointaines, une idée qui ne peut être obtenue que par ceux d’un autre lieu ou d’un autre temps. Ici même, où nous vivons et travaillons, mangeons et dormons, des hommes et des femmes ont suivi Dieu avec une profonde dévotion ascétique et ont atteint les sommets de la sainteté. » L’évêque a rappelé l’exemple de saint Jean le Thaumaturge, dont la fête avait été célébrée la veille : « Hier, nous avons gardé le souvenir de saint Jean, qui est un brillant exemple de cette réalité. Pendant près de douze ans, cet homme de Dieu a été l’évêque dirigeant de notre diocèse. Il marchait dans les mêmes rues que nous marchons ; prié dans plusieurs des mêmes temples ; prêché du même ambons. Il observait les jeûnes, ici où nous sommes maintenant engagés dans le jeûne des Apôtres. Il a honoré les fêtes, ici où nous aussi nous les honorons. Il a vu un monde troublé, marqué par la guerre. Il a vu les tentations de la mondanité, le laxisme œcuménique, le syncrétisme, et l’abandon croissant de la moralité et l’adhésion à la Vérité divine – des choses que nous voyons certainement marquer notre âge relâché et décrépit. Et pourtant, vivant au milieu de tout cela, il a atteint une profonde sainteté. Cette terre même, en ces temps-là, a produit l’un des plus grands saints de l’histoire de l’Église : qui pouvait voir dans les cœurs, qui défendait la foi, qui pouvait guérir les malades, qui pouvait calmer les tempêtes des passions – à la fois en lui-même et chez les autres. Et il n’est qu’un exemple. Nous pouvons penser à d’innombrables autres. Peut-être pourrions-nous nous rappeler sainte Aline de Belgique, qui vécut au VIIe siècle à Dilbeek, juste à l’extérieur de cette ville. Ou les centaines et même les milliers qui ont été sanctifiés tout autour de nous. »
Le prédicateur a conclu: « L’Église souhaite, en nous en rappelant, que nous soyons encouragés, afin que nous ne perdions pas courage. Mais l’Église veut aussi que nous soyons poussés à l’action. Il est temps d’arrêter d’excuser notre faible foi ou notre témoignage orthodoxe, comme s’il pouvait être plus fort si seulement nous vivions dans un endroit orthodoxe plus confortable, ou à une époque moins troublée. Celle-là est une tentation du malin. Nous devons nous fortifier avec les exemples de nos ancêtres et reconnaître que Dieu nous fournit ici — et où que nous soyons, ou où que nous allions — absolument tout ce qui est nécessaire pour atteindre les sommets du salut. Il ne manque que notre volonté de lui obéir, de le suivre sans équivoque, d’être audacieux devant le monde et de combattre les passions en nous-mêmes. »
Après les services divins et les félicitations pour le père Stefan nouvellement décoré, un banquet a été servi dans la salle de la paroisse de la Résurrection, et l’évêque Irénée a pu rester plusieurs heures avec le clergé et les fidèles, discutant de sujets spirituels et de la vie de la Église.
Dans la soirée, l’évêque est parti pour l’aéroport.
