14 / 27 SEPTEMBER 2025: The Altar Feast of the Cathedral of the Exaltation of the Cross in the God-preserved city of Geneva was celebrated with solemn beauty. Heading the Divine Services was the Ruling Bishop, His Grace Bishop Irenei of London and Western Europe, co-served by the clergy of the Cathedral: Archpriests Pavel Tsvetkoff, Archpriest Emilian Pocinok, Archpriest Antony Vargaraki, Priest Antoine Barros and Archdeacon Dometian; together with diocesan clergymen from the surrounding parishes: Priest Pavel Golynski (from Basel), Priest Aviv Saliou-Diallo (from Vevey), Priest Vladimir Svystun (from Bern), and Protodeacon Michel Vernaz (from Vevey). Joining them were visiting clerics Archpriest Michael Gundaev (Patriarchate of Moscow), and Abbot Herman and Hieromonk Innokenty (Ukrainian Orthodox Church). At the Vigil of the Feast, the former Ruling Bishop of the Diocese, Archbishop Michael, now in retirement, prayed in the Altar together with the other clergy.
On Friday evening, the great rite of the elevation of the Precious Cross was performed during the All-Night Vigil, at which Bishop Irenei bore the Cross aloft with the aid of the assembled Priests, as it was censed by the Deacons and baptised in fragrant rose water during the repeated hundredfold singing of ‘Lord, have mercy!’ Following the symbolic elevation in all the cardinal directions, the clergy and faithful prostrated themselves before the Life-Giving Tree of the Lord as all sang together, ‘We venerate Thy Cross, O Christ, and we glorify Thy holy resurrection!’
On Saturday, the day of the Feast itself, a special spirit of solemnity was noted by all present. At the invitation of Bishop Irenei, Archbishop Michael joined in the concelebration of the Divine Liturgy, and the service was sung beautifully by the talented Cathedral choir. During the Hours before the Liturgy, Michael Alexandrovich Romash, son of the Cathedral Starosta, was tonsured as Reader. After the consecration of the Holy Gifts, Subdeacon Alexei Sukhanov was ordained to the holy Diaconate, to the joyful cries of ‘Axios!’ by the clergy and faithful.
Following the conclusion of the Divine Liturgy, Vladyka Irenei preached a homily on the Feast, delivering to the faithful the pious words of the ever-memorable Archbishop Paul of Australia and New Zealand, whose homily on the Cross is especially beloved of our current Vladyka. A Cross procession around the cathedral followed, the faithful boldly proclaiming the saving power of Christ’s Cross on the ancient streets of Geneva.
At the festal luncheon following the Divine Services, the faithful, the clergy and their archpastor continued in spiritual conversation for several hours, sharing with each other the joy of the Feast.
Bishop Irenei remains in Geneva for the dominical services of the weekend, before returning to London.
14 / 27 СЕНТЯБРЯ 2025 г.: Престольный Праздник кафедрального собора Воздвижения Честнаго и Животворящего Креста Господня в богоспасаемом граде Женеве был торжественно и благолепно отмечен. Богослужения возглавил Правящий архиерей, Преосвященный епископ Лондонский и Западно-Европейский Ириней, в сослужении соборного духовенства: протоиереев Павла Цветкова, Емильяна Починока, Антония Варгараки, священника Антония Барроса и протодиакона Дометиана; а также священнослужителей епархии из окрестных приходов: священника Павла Голынского (из Базеля), священника Авива Салиу-Диалло (из Веве), священника Владимира Свистуна (из Берна) и протодиакона Михаила Верна (из Веве). К ним присоединились возлюбленные гости: протоиерей Михаил Гундаев (Московский Патриархат), игумен Герман и иеромонах Иннокентий (Украинская Православная Церковь). На Всенощном бдении молился в Алтаре вместе с духовенством бывший Правящий архиерей епархии, ныне на покое пребывающий архиепископ Михаил.
В пятницу вечером было совершен особенный чин воздвижения Честнаго Креста Господня во время Всенощного бдения. Владыка Ириней вознес Крест Христов, при содействии сослужащих священников, диаконы каждали его фимиамом и орошали благоухающей розовой водой при многократном стократном пении «Господи, помилуй!». После воздвижения Креста во все стороны света духовенство и верующие преклонились пред Животворящим Древом Господним, воспевая: «Кресту Твоему поклоняемся, Владыко, и святое Воскресение Твое славим!»
В сам день Праздника, в субботу, особая благоговейная торжественность царила в сердцах всех собравшихся. По приглашению владыки Иринея архиепископ Михаил присоединился к сослужению Божественной литургии, которая была украшена прекрасным пением талантливого соборного хора. На часах пред Литургией Михаил Александрович Ромаш, сын старосты собора, был пострижен во чтеца. По освящении Святых Даров иподиакон Алексий Суханов был рукоположен во диакона, под радостные возгласы «Аксиос!» от духовенства и народа.
По окончании Божественной литургии владыка Ириней обратился к верующим с проповедью на праздник, приведя назидательные слова приснопамятного архиепископа Павла, Сиднейского и Австралийского, чья проповедь о Кресте особенно любима нашим владыкой. Затем состоялся крестный ход вокруг собора, во время которого верные возглашали спасительную силу Креста Христова на древних улицах Женевы.
За праздничной трапезой после богослужения архипастырь, духовенство и верные продолжили духовное общение на протяжении многих часов, разделяя общую радость праздника.
Епископ Ириней пребывает в Женеве и на воскресные богослужения грядущих дней, после чего возвратится в Лондон.
14 / 27 SEPTEMBRE 2025 : La fête patronale de la cathédrale de l’Exaltation de la Croix, à Genève, fut célébrée avec une solennelle beauté. Les offices divins furent présidés par l’Evêque dirigeant, Son Excellence Monseigneur Irénée de Londres et d’Europe Occidentale, concélébrant avec le clergé de la cathédrale : les archiprêtres Paul Tsvetkoff, Emilian Pocinok et Antoine Vargaraki, le prêtre Antoine Barros et l’archidiacre Dométien ; ainsi qu’avec les clercs diocésains des paroisses environnantes : le prêtre Paul Golynski (de Bâle), le prêtre Aviv Saliou-Diallo (de Vevey), le prêtre Vladimir Svystun (de Berne), et le protodiacre Michel Vernaz (de Vevey). S’étaient joints à eux les clercs visiteurs : l’archiprêtre Michel Goundaev (Patriarcat de Moscou), l’higoumène Hermane et l’hiéromoine Innocent (Église Orthodoxe d’Ukraine). Aux vigiles de la fête, l’ancien évêque dirigeant du diocèse, l’archevêque Michel, désormais à la retraite, pria dans l’Autel avec les autres clercs.
Le vendredi soir, le grand rite de l’élévation de la précieuse Croix fut accompli durant la vigile nocturne, lorsque Monseigneur Irénée éleva la Croix avec l’aide des prêtres assemblés, tandis qu’elle était encensée par les diacres et baignée d’eau parfumée à la rose au cours du chant répété des cent « Kyrie eleison ». Après l’élévation symbolique vers les quatre points cardinaux, le clergé et les fidèles se prosternèrent devant l’Arbre vivifiant du Seigneur en chantant tous ensemble : « Nous nous prosternons devant ta Croix, ô Christ, et nous glorifions ta sainte Résurrection ! »
Le samedi, jour même de la fête, un esprit particulier de solennité se fit sentir chez tous les présents. À l’invitation de Monseigneur Irénée, l’archevêque Michel participa à la concélébration de la divine Liturgie, laquelle fut magnifiquement chantée par le talentueux chœur de la cathédrale. Durant les Heures précédant la Liturgie, Michel Alexandrovitch Romash, fils du staroste de la cathédrale, fut tonsuré lecteur. Après la consécration des saints Dons, le sous-diacre Alexei Soukhanov fut ordonné au saint diaconat, sous les joyeuses acclamations de « Axios ! » de la part du clergé et des fidèles.
À la conclusion de la divine Liturgie, Monseigneur Irénée prononça une homélie sur la fête, transmettant aux fidèles les pieuses paroles du toujours mémorable archevêque Paul d’Australie et de Nouvelle-Zélande, dont l’homélie sur la Croix est particulièrement chère à notre hiérarque actuel. Une procession de la Croix autour de la cathédrale suivit, au cours de laquelle les fidèles proclamèrent avec hardiesse la puissance salvifique de la Croix du Christ dans les antiques rues de Genève.
Au banquet festif qui suivit les offices, les fidèles, le clergé et leur archipasteur poursuivirent durant plusieurs heures une conversation spirituelle, partageant ensemble la joie de la fête.
Monseigneur Irénée demeure à Genève pour les offices dominicaux du week-end, avant de regagner Londres.
