6 / 19 JANUARY 2025: The Great Feast of the Theophany, the Baptism of Christ, was solemnly celebrated in the Cathedral of the Exaltation of the Cross during the first Archpastoral Visitation of His Grace Bishop Irenei of London and Western Europe to Geneva in 2025.
The full cycle of Divine Services was celebrated from Friday to Sunday, culminating in the two Liturgies with the Great Blessing of the waters. On Sunday, this was done at the conclusion of the Hierarchical Divine Liturgy with, as is custom in Geneva, the blessing taking place in the courtyard before the Cathedral itself.
Co-serving the Bishop were the Cathedral clergy: Archpriest Pavel Tsvetkoff, Archpriest Emilian Pocinok, Priest Antoine Barros and Archdeacon Dometian (Redko). They were joined by Priest Bogdan Babenko, who serves in the newly-formed Parish of St John the Wonderworker in Pau, France, and who arrived in Geneva on the occasion of the Feast, whereupon he received an antimins and chrism for the new parish, as well as various liturgical items gifted from the Cathedral.
The Sanctification of the Waters was followed by the blessing of the Cathedral with the holy water, as well as all the clergy and faithful present, who were both sprinkled with and drank of ‘the waters of the Jordan’ that had been blessed in their midst. In keeping with pious Orthodox custom, faithful brought bottles and filled them with the newly-blessed water, taking these to their homes where, over the coming weeks before the beginning of Great Lent, every Orthodox Christian has his home blessed each year by a Priest, who sprinkles it with the water brought there from this Feast.
In his homily at the end of the Divine Liturgy, Vladyka Irenei spoke of the Baptism of Christ as a moment of profound joy for all Christians, as it reveals the extent of God’s saving Grace for us. ‘In this Feast we begin to realise, if our spiritual eyes are open,’ he preached, ‘that we are veritably surrounded by the tools of our redemption: water sanctifies us, oil heals us, bread and wine mystically feed us, being transformed into the True Body and Precious Blood of the Saviour. The hands of a priest convey the forgiveness of sins. The love of our fellow Christians transforms the hardness of our hearts.’
’Let us, therefore, my fellow Christians, rightly mark this sacred festival,’ continued Vladyka. ‘Let us humbly bow down before God Who raises us up. Let us not flee the weakness of our created nature, but become ever more aware that even the basest elements of our nature can be sanctified by God, just as today the waters are sanctified. Let us rush with all our hearts towards this God, Who today reveals how He rushes towards us: He comes to us in flesh, He enters the waters, He wanders the deserts, He enters our cities, He teaches our young and our elders — and ultimately He culminates this life of extraordinary self-offering with a sacrificial death; for today we behold that love which surpasses all other love — the love that lays down its life. But this love shall rise, as Christ shall rise in eternal life, and the very creation He sanctifies today rises with Him, united with Him forever, unto eternity!’
As is customary during His Grace’s regular visits to the Geneva Cathedral, Bishop Irenei spent time during these days chairing meetings of the Parish Association, meeting with members of the Parish Council, conversing with clergy, and meeting with faithful about various matters.

Полный круг Богослужений был совершен с пятницы по воскресенье, кульминацией которых стали две Божественные литургии с Великим освящением воды. В воскресенье это освящение состоялось по завершении архиерейской Божественной литургии, причём, по традиции Женевы, чин был совершен во дворе перед собором.
Его Преосвященству сослужили клирики кафедрального собора: протоиерей Павел Цветков, протоиерей Емилиан Поцинок, священник Антуан Баррос и протодиакон Дометиан (Редко). К ним присоединился священник Богдан Бабенко, который в настоящее время служит в недавно учрежденном приходе в честь святителя Иоанна чудотворца в По, Франция, который прибыл в Женеву по случаю праздника и получил от архиерея новый антиминс и миро для нового прихода, а также различные богослужебные предметы, преподнесенные в дар от Крестовоздвиженского собора.
Великое освящение воды было последовано освящением собора, клириков и всех присутствовавших верующих, которые были окроплены и испили «воды Иорданской», освященной в их присутствии. Согласно благочестивому православному обычаю, многие верующие принесли с собой сосуды, чтобы наполнить их освященной водой, которую они унесли домой для личного освящения и ежегодного благословения своих домов священником — обычай, соблюдаемый на протяжении недель после этого праздника до начала Великого поста.
В своем слове в конце Божественной литургии Владыка Ириней говорил о Крещении Христовом как о моменте глубочайшей радости для всех христиан, поскольку оно раскрывает всю полноту спасительной благодати Божией к нам. «Мы осознаем,— проповедовал Архиерей — что нас окружают орудия нашего спасения: вода нас освящает, елей нас исцеляет, хлеб и вино таинственно питают нас, претворяясь в истинное Тело и честную Кровь Спасителя. Руки священника даруют прощение грехов. Любовь наших ближних христиан преображает ожесточенные сердца.»
«Итак, мои дорогие христиане,— продолжил проповедник, —достойно отметим этот святой праздник. Поклонимся смиренно Богу, Который возносит нас. Не будем избегать слабостей нашей природы, но осознаем, что даже самые простые элементы творения могут быть освящены Богом, как сегодня освящается вода. Спешите всем сердцем к Богу, Который сегодня являет, как Он спешит к нам: Он приходит во плоти, входит в воды, бродит по пустыням, входит в наши города, учит молодых и старых — и, в конце концов, завершает эту жизнь жертвенной смертью; ибо сегодня мы созерцаем любовь, которая превосходит всякую иную любовь — любовь, которая отдает жизнь. Но эта любовь восстанет, как восстанет Христос к вечной жизни, и само творение, которое Он сегодня освящает, восстанет с Ним, соединённое с Ним навеки.»
Как это обычно бывает во время регулярных визитов Преосвященного Владыки в Женевский кафедральный собор, епископ Ириней провел встречи с приходским советом, председательствовал на заседаниях Приходской ассоциации, беседовал с духовенством и встречался с верующими по различным пастырским и духовным вопросам.

6 / 19 JANVIER 2025 : La grande fête de la Théophanie, le Baptême du Christ, a été solennellement célébrée à la cathédrale de l’Exaltation de la Croix lors de la première visite archipastorale de Son Excellence l’Évêque Irénée de Londres et d’Europe occidentale à Genève en 2025.
Le cycle complet des offices divins a été célébré du vendredi au dimanche, culminant avec deux Liturgies et la grande bénédiction des eaux. Le dimanche, cette bénédiction a été accomplie à la fin de la Divine Liturgie hiérarchique, avec, comme il est de coutume à Genève, la bénédiction ayant lieu dans la cour devant la cathédrale.
L’Évêque était entouré du clergé de la cathédrale : l’Archiprêtre Pavel Tsvetkoff, l’Archiprêtre Émilien Pocinok, le Prêtre Antoine Barros et l’Archidiacre Dométien (Redko). Ils étaient rejoints par le Prêtre Bogdan Babenko, qui sert dans la nouvelle paroisse de Saint Jean le Thaumaturge à Pau, en France.
La sanctification des eaux a été suivie par la bénédiction de la cathédrale avec l’eau bénite, ainsi que celle de tous les clercs et fidèles présents, qui ont été aspergés et ont bu des « eaux du Jourdain » bénies en leur milieu. Conformément à la pieuse coutume orthodoxe, les fidèles ont apporté des bouteilles et les ont remplies de l’eau nouvellement bénite, qu’ils ont ensuite emportée chez eux. Au cours des semaines suivantes, avant le début du Grand Carême, chaque chrétien orthodoxe fait bénir sa maison par un prêtre, qui l’asperge avec l’eau apportée de cette fête.
Dans son homélie à la fin de la Divine Liturgie, Vladyka Irénée a parlé du Baptême du Christ comme d’un moment de joie profonde pour tous les chrétiens, car il révèle l’étendue de la Grâce salvatrice de Dieu pour nous. « Si nos yeux spirituels sont ouverts,— disait-il —dans cette fête nous réalisons que nous sommes véritablement entourés des instruments de notre salut : l’eau nous sanctifie, l’huile nous guérit, le pain et le vin nous nourrissent mystiquement, étant transformés en le véritable Corps et le précieux Sang du Sauveur ; les mains d’un prêtre nous accordent le pardon des péchés. L’amour de nos frères et sœurs en Christ adoucit la dureté de nos cœurs.»
L’évêque a poursuivi : « Marquons donc, mes frères chrétiens, cette fête sacrée comme il se doit. Humilions-nous devant Dieu qui nous élève. N’évitons pas la faiblesse de notre nature créée, mais devenons toujours plus conscients que même les éléments les plus simples de notre nature peuvent être sanctifiés par Dieu, tout comme aujourd’hui les eaux sont sanctifiées. Accourons de tout notre cœur vers ce Dieu qui montre aujourd’hui comment Il accourt vers nous : Il vient à nous dans la chair, entre dans les eaux, parcourt les déserts, pénètre nos villes, enseigne aux jeunes et aux anciens — et, en fin de compte, Il couronne cette vie d’un don extraordinaire en offrant Sa mort en sacrifice. Aujourd’hui, nous contemplons cet amour qui surpasse tout autre — l’amour qui donne sa vie. Mais cet amour se relèvera, tout comme le Christ ressuscitera dans la vie éternelle, et la création qu’Il sanctifie aujourd’hui ressuscitera avec Lui, unie à Lui pour toujours, pour l’éternité. »
Comme c’est la coutume lors des visites régulières de Son Excellence à la cathédrale de Genève, l’Évêque Irénée a profité de ces journées pour présider des réunions de l’association paroissiale, rencontrer les membres du Conseil paroissial, échanger avec le clergé et s’entretenir avec les fidèles sur diverses questions.
