To the Venerable Clergy, God-Loving Monastics and Pious Faithful,

Children of the Diocese of Great Britain and Western Europe

Dear in Christ, Fathers, Brothers and Sisters:

I greet the faithful of our God-preserved Diocese with the joyful news that our Church Abroad now has a new First Hierarch: His Eminence Metropolitan Nicholas. The canonical election of the Primate was carried out on the first day of our Sobor, currently taking place in New York, in a prayerful and pious manner, following the customs of our holy forebears; and at the end of the brief process of election in which the guidance of the Holy Spirit was sought and led us to our faithful choice, Bishop Nicholas was proclaimed as duly elected Metropolitan of Eastern America and New York and First Hierarch of the Church Abroad. Axios!

I know how welcome this news will be to the faithful of Europe, who held deep love for the ever-memorable Metropolitan Hilarion, who guided our Church Abroad with remarkablly gentle humility and piety for so many years. He set for us the example — or rather, passed on the example he had himself inherited from Vladyka Lavra and others before him — of primacy exercised in love, meekness and self-abasement, by which the uniquely Synodal nature of our Church Abroad was cherished and preserved through a heartfelt desire, brought to life by prayer and labour, to foster the unity of our Hierarchs and our whole Church.

We rejoice that now God has given us a new First Hierarch, well known to us and beloved by us, who has already, in the various offices he has held in the Church, demonstrated a similar humility and prayerfulness, and deep respect for the unique character of our autonomous Church Abroad. I have known Metropolitan Nicholas for many years, since long before he or I were Bishops, and have a deep love for my esteemed co-hierarch, in whom I, like so many others, find incarnated the spirit and way of life of Metropolitan Lavra, with whom he himself was so close. We rejoice before God, that through his labours with the Holy Synod of Bishops, the history of our Church will carry forward into its second century in the same spirit as the first — and we are especially grateful that the new First Hierarch has close associations to our parishes in Europe, which has long been at the heart of the Church Abroad.

I call upon all the faithful children of our Diocese to give thanks to God for this joyful moment in our history, and hereby instruct that on this forthcoming Sunday, 5th / 18th September 2022, on which day His Eminence shall be formally enthroned in New York, a Moleben of Thanksgiving shall be served in all parishes of our Diocese, immediately following the Divine Liturgy, prior to which this letter shall be read from the amvon.

My beloved Fathers, brothers, sisters and spiritual children: truly, our God is good, and just, and loving and kind, and gives to us far more than we deserve! May He richly bless the First-Hierarchical ministry of His Eminence, Metropolitan Nicholas, and preserve our Primate unto many and blessed years!

Приветствую всех верующих нашей богосохраняемой Епархии радостной новостью о том, что в нашей Зарубежной Церкви появился новый Первоиерарх: Его Высокопреосвященство Высокопреосвященнейший Митрополит НИКОЛАЙ. Каноническое избрание Предстоятеля совершилось в первый день нашего Собора, проходящего ныне в Нью-Йорке, молитвенно и благочестиво, по обычаям наших святых предков; и в конце краткого процесса избрания, в котором искали водительства Святого Духа, Который привел нас к нашему верному выбору, бывший епископ Николай был провозглашен новоизбранным Митрополитом Восточно-Американским и Нью-Йоркским и Первоиерархом Зарубежной Церкви. Аксиос!

Я знаю, как приятно будет это известие верующим Европы, питавшим глубокую любовь к приснопамятному митрополиту Илариону, который столько лет с таким кротким смирением и благочестием руководил нашей Зарубежной Церковью. Он нам показал пример — или, вернее, передал пример, который он сам унаследовал от Владыки Лавры и других до него — первенства, осуществляемого в любви, кротости и смирении, в котором лелеялась и сохранялась уникальная синодальная природа нашей Зарубежной Церкви, сердечным желанием, молитвой и трудом укреплять единство наших иерархов и всей нашей Церкви.

Мы радуемся, что ныне Бог нам дал нового, хорошо известного нам и любимого нами Первоиерарха, который уже на различных служениях, которые он занимал в Церкви, проявлял такое же смирение и молитвенность, и глубокое уважение к уникальной характер нашей автономной Зарубежной Церкви. Митрополита Николая я знаю уже много лет, задолго до того, как он или я стали епископами, и питаю глубокую любовь к моему уважаемому соиерарху, в котором я, как и многие другие, нахожу воплощением дух и образ жизни митрополита Лавры, с которым он сам был так близок. Мы радуемся перед Богом, что благодаря его трудам со Священным Архиерейским Синодом история нашей Церкви продолжит свое второе столетие в том же духе, что и первое, — и мы особенно благодарны, что новый Первоиерарх имеет тесные связи с наши приходы в Европе, которые уже давно стали сердцем Зарубежной Церкви.

Я призываю всех верных чад нашей епархии возблагодарить Бога за этот радостный момент в нашей истории и настоящим поручаю, чтобы в это предстоящее Воскресенье, 5 / 18 сентября 2022 года, день настолования Его Высокопреосвященство в Нью-Йорке, во всех приходах нашей епархии совершить благодарственный молебен сразу после Божественной литургии, до чего это письмо должно быть прочитано с амвона.

Je salue tous les fidèles de notre Diocèse préservé par Dieu avec la joyeuse nouvelle que notre Église à l’étranger a maintenant un nouveau Premier Hiérarque : Son Éminence le Métropolite Nicolas. L’élection canonique du Primat s’est déroulée le premier jour de notre Sobor, qui se déroule actuellement à New York, d’une manière priante et pieuse, selon les coutumes de nos saints ancêtres ; et à la fin du bref processus d’élection au cours duquel la direction du Saint-Esprit a été recherchée, et Qui nous a conduits à notre choix fidèle, l’évêque Nicholas a été proclamé métropolite de l’Amérique de l’Est et de New York et Premier Hiérarque de l’Église à l’étranger. Axios!

Je sais à quel point cette nouvelle sera la bienvenue pour les fidèles d’Europe, qui ont eu un profond amour pour le Métropolite Hilarion de sainte memoire, qui a guidé notre Église à l’étranger avec une si douce humilité et une si piété pendant tant d’années. Il nous a donné l’exemple — ou plutôt, a transmis l’exemple qu’il avait lui-même hérité de Vladyka Lavra et d’autres avant lui — d’une primauté exercée dans l’amour, la douceur et l’humilité, dans laquelle la nature uniquement synodale de notre Église à l’étranger a été chérie et préservée par le désir sincère, par la prière et par le travail, de favoriser l’unité de nos Hiérarques et de toute notre Église.

Nous nous réjouissons que maintenant Dieu nous ait donné un nouveau Premier Hiérarque, bien connu de nous et aimé de nous, qui a déjà, dans les divers offices qu’il a occupés dans l’Église, fait preuve d’une humilité et d’un esprit de prière similaires, et d’un profond respect pour l’unique caractère de notre Église autonome à l’étranger. Je connais le métropolite Nicolas depuis de nombreuses années, bien avant qu’il ou moi ne soyons évêques, et j’ai un profond amour pour mon estimé co-hiérarque, en qui, comme tant d’autres, je trouve incarné l’esprit et le mode de vie du métropolite Lavra, dont il était lui-même si proche. Nous nous réjouissons devant Dieu que, grâce à ses travaux avec le Saint Synode des Évêques, l’histoire de notre Église se poursuive dans son deuxième siècle dans le même esprit que le premier — et nous sommes particulièrement reconnaissants que le nouveau Premier Hiérarque ait des liens étroits avec nos paroisses en Europe, qui est depuis longtemps au cœur de l’Église à l’étranger.

J’appelle tous les enfants fidèles de notre Diocèse à rendre grâce à Dieu pour ce moment joyeux de notre histoire, et ordonne par la présente que ce prochain dimanche 5 / 18 septembre 2022, jour où Son Éminence sera officiellement intronisé à New York, un Moleben de gratitude sera servi dans toutes les paroisses de notre Diocèse, immédiatement après la Divine Liturgie, avant laquelle cette lettre sera lue de l’amvon.

Mes pères, frères, sœurs et enfants spirituels bien-aimés : vraiment, notre Dieu est bon, et juste, et Il nous donne bien plus que nous ne méritons ! Puisse-t-Il bénir richement le ministère de la Première Hiérarchie de son éminence, le métropolite Nicolas, et préserver notre Primat pendant de nombreuses et bénies années !
