On the Feast of the Dormition of the Most-Holy Theotokos, Friday 15th / 28th August 2020, His Grace Bishop Irenei of London and Western Europe made an Archpastoral Visitation to the Parish of St Elisabeth the New-Martyr in Wallasey, England. Travelling by car from London, His Grace presided over the evening services on the eve of the Feast, and then at the full Hierarchical Divine Liturgy in honour of the Dormition on Friday morning. His Grace was co-served by Archpriest Paul Elliott, Rector of the Parish and Chancellor of the Diocese, together with a host of Subdeacons, Readers and other Alter servers from the parish and nearby communities.
Following the festal Divine Liturgy, Bishop Irenei blessed herbs, assembled for the traditional blessing on the Dormition; and then a large parish banquet was held in honour of the Feast and of the Archpastor’s visit to the parish. Vladyka Irenei was able to remain in the parish for the following day’s celebration of the ‘Third Feast of the Saviour’, the feastday of the Icon of Christ ‘Not Made with Human Hands’, where a quieter Liturgy was celebrated, concluding with the blessing of nuts and seeds.
Bishop Irenei expressed his joy at his return to the parish for his first visit since the conclusion of the Coronavirus-related quarantine and lockdown, and especially to see that the parish has been thriving despite the challenges — with restoration works having taken place on the church walls, as well as the active involvement of so many parishioners in the day-to-day life of the community. ‘May the Mother of God continue to encourage you through the glorious witness of her sacred repose and glorious bodily ascension,’ His Grace said in his festal homily, ‘protecting you from all fear and strengthening you in divine love.’
After the conclusion of the Saturday Liturgy and a small breakfast provided by the parish, providing the opportunity for Vladyka to speak personally with many parishioners, Bishop Irenei departed for Norwich in the east of England. There His Grace presided over the Sunday Liturgy at the Parish of St Alexander Nevsky, co-served by Priest Spasimir Ivanov and the parish’s Reader Sergei Dorofeev. At the Little Entrance of the Liturgy, Vladyka awarded Fr Spasimir the Nabedrennik; and at the conclusion of the service, following a homily, Bishop Irenei formally appointed Priest Spasimir as Rector of the Parish, which he has served for the past several years as Assistant Priest with Archpriest Andrew Phillips of the Colchester Parish. In elevating Fr Spasimir to Rector, Bishop Irenei noted that it was a sign of his confidence and satisfaction with the tireless labours expended on behalf of the parish, ‘which has grown before our eyes in remarkable ways: not only are there substantially more faithful here on each of my visits — with the church now full almost to capacity — and obvious love and care taken for the beauty of the holy Temple, which is adorned with new icons, holy vessels and other items, as well as the development of a wonderful choir which sings beautifully; but the parish has also become a welcoming spiritual home to individuals of many backgrounds, cultures and languages. Today I witness here, living as a single family, Englishmen, Russians, Bulgarians, Romanians, Welshmen, Serbs, Greeks, and other nationalities I may have overlooked. All of you have expressed to me how welcoming the parish is, and how grateful you are to encounter here a place that “feels like home” while at the same time adhering fully and strictly to the traditions of our beloved Russian Orthodox Church Abroad. Glory to God! May He strengthen you, Father Spasimir, in the ongoing labours you undertake for this precious community.’
Following a generous banquet and personal conversations with parishioners, Bishop Irenei departed Norfolk for London.

В праздник Успения Пресвятой Богородицы, в пятницу, 15/28 августа 2020 года, Преосвященный епископ Лондонский и Западно-Европейский Ириней совершил архипастырское посещение прихода Святой Великомученицы княгини Елизаветы в Уолласи, Англия. Прибыв на автомобиле из Лондона Его Преосвященство возглавил вечернее богослужение накануне праздника, а затем Божественную литургию в честь Успения Пресвятой Богородицы, состоявшуюся в пятницу утром. Его Преосвященству сослужили настоятель прихода и епархиальный секретарь протоиерей Павел Эллиотт, а также множество иподиаконов, чтецов и других алтарников из тамошнего прихода и соседних общин.
После праздничной Божественной литургии Владыка освятил травы, собранные для традиционного освящения на день Успения Пресвятой Богородицы. Затем в честь праздника и архиерейского визита была устроена большая приходская трапеза. Епископ Ириней смог остаться на приходе и на следующий день, когда Св. Церковь отмечает «Третий Спас» – праздник Нерукотворного Образа Христа Спасителя. В этот день была отслужена обычная Литургия, завершившаяся чином освящения орехов и семян.
Владыка Ириней выразил радость по поводу своего визита на приход после завершения периода карантина и самоизоляции, связанных с коронавирусом, и особенно по поводу того, что данная община процветает. Несмотря на вызовы времени, в храме реставрируются стены, а множество прихожан принимает активное участие в повседневной церковной жизни. «Пусть Богородица и впредь ободряет вас через славное свидетельство ее священного успения и достославного телесного вознесения, – сказал Его Преосвященство в праздничной проповеди, – ограждая вас от всякой боязни и укрепляя в Божественной любви».
После завершения субботней Литургии и небольшого угощения, устроенного приходом, что дало Владыке возможность лично пообщаться с многими прихожанами, Преосвященнейший Епископ Ириней отбыл в Норвич на востоке Англии. Здесь Его Преосвященство возглавил воскресную Божественную литургию на приходе святого благоверного князя Александра Невского в сослужении иерея Спасимира Иванова и приходского чтеца Сергия Дорофеева. На Литургии на Малом входе Архиерей наградил о. Спасимира правом ношения набедренника; а по завершении службы, после проповеди, епископ Ириней официально назначил настоятелем прихода о. Спасимира, который последние несколько лет исполнял послушание помощника протоиерея Андрея Филлипса из Колчестерского прихода. Возведя отца Спасимира в настоятели, Епископ Ириней отметил, что это знак его уверенности и удовлетворения неустанным трудом, сделанными во благо прихода, «который чудно вырос на наших глазах: здесь не только значительно увеличивается количество верующих при каждом моем визите – когда сегодня церковь заполнена почти до предела – но и очевидны та любовь и забота о благолепии святого храма, который украшен новыми иконами, священными сосудами и другой утварью, а также создан прекрасно поющий хор. Приход также стал гостеприимным духовным домом для людей разных национальностей, культур и языков. Сегодня я наблюдаю здесь, живущих одной семьей, англичан, русских, болгар, румын, валлийцев, сербов, греков и представителей других национальностей, которых я, возможно, не заметил. Все вы рассказали мне, насколько радушен приход и как вы благодарны за то, что встретили здесь место, в котором «чувствует себя как дома», в то же время полностью и строго придерживаясь традиций нашей любимой Русской Православной Церкви Заграницей. Слава Богу! Пусть Он укрепит вас, отец Спасимир, в непрекращающихся трудах, которые вы предпринимаете для этой драгоценной общины».
После обильной трапезы и множества личных бесед с прихожанами епископ Ириней отбыл из Норфолка в Лондон.
