The First Hierarch and Ruling Bishop celebrated the Feast of the Exaltation in the Geneva Cathedral, in the 160th year of its life.

14 / 27 SEPTEMBER 2026: The Feast of the Exaltation of the Cross of Christ, the Altar Feast of the Geneva Cathedral, was marked by First Hierarchical celebrations in Switzerland. At the invitation of the Ruling Bishop of the Diocese of Great Britain and Western Europe, His Grace Bishop Irenei of London and Western Europe, the First Hierarch of the Russian Orthodox Church Outside of Russia, His Eminence Metropolitan Nicholas of Eastern America and New York, travelled to Geneva to head the Divine Services of the Feast in the 160th year since the Cathedral’s founding.
Bearing with him the wonderworking Kursk-root icon of the Theotokos, the First Hierarch was greeted at the Cathedral on Saturday evening for the All-night Vigil of the Feast. The Litya and blessing of loaves was served by Bishop Irenei, and at the end of Matins the Metropolitan ascended the cathedra for the Rite of the Exaltation of the Cross. Co-serving the hierarchs were the Cathedral clerics, Archpriests Pavel Tsvetkoff and Emilian Pocinok, Priest Antoine Barros, Archdeacon Dometian (Redko) and Deacon Alexei Suharov, together with clergy from the surrounding regions who assembled in Geneva for the rite: Archpriests Ioann Grigoriță (from the parish in Luxembourg) and Pavel Golynski (from Basel), Priests Vladimir Svystun (from Bern) and Aviv Saliou-Diallo (from Vevey), and Protodeacon Michel Vernaz (from Vevey).
The Rite of the Exaltation, which is performed only by a bishop in a major cathedral, is a beautiful remembrance of the ancient event, and is performed in Geneva each year with especial solemnity. At its conclusion, Metropolitan Nicholas anointed the faithful and Bishop Irenei distributed flowers that had been blessed with the rose water poured over the Cross during the rite.
On Sunday morning, the day of the Feast itself, Bishop Irenei welcomed into the Cathedral the two hierarchs in retirement who reside within the Diocese: his predecessor on the cathedra of Geneva, His Eminence Archbishop Michael, and the former Vicar of the Diocese, His Grace Bishop Alexander. The holy Kursk-root icon having first been greeted at the porch, the First Hierarch was met with bread and salt on the steps, after which he was vested on the cathedra and the Hours were read. Joining the clergy on Sunday were additionally Priest Georgy Tytov (from Frauenfeld) and Deacon Gabriel Gigauri (from Lyon), and clergymen from the Georgian Orthodox Church.
The four Hierarchs concelebrated the festal Divine Liturgy, which was beautifully sung by the Geneva Cathedral choir. At the end of the service, a Cross Procession was held around the Cathedral and a moleben served before the Precious Cross. The First Hierarch delivered a spiritual word to the faithful, encouraging them to give praise to God for the many thousands of Divine Services that have been held in the Cathedral during its 160 years, and to continue to live their lives in a manner worthy of His Grace. Vladyka Irenei then welcomed Metropolitan Nicholas with warm words of fraternal love, expressing his happiness that the close bond of the Hierarchs of the Church Abroad is manifest not only in the dedication of each bishop to the parishes in his care, but also the readiness of the First Hierarch to make visits across the length and breadth of the Church as a whole, demonstrating her unity and the bonds of the family and fellowship of all her faithful. The Metropolitan in turn greeted Bishop Irenei, his fellow Hierarchs, clergy and all the faithful, and presented the Cathedral with an icon of the Holy Royal Martyrs and the New Confessors of the Russian Orthodox Church.
Following the Divine Services, a banquet was held on the grounds of the nearby Museum of Arts. Then, in the evening, a special choral concert took place in the Cathedral in honour of the Feast and the 160 years of the life of the parish, with more than 50 voices coming together to the glory of God.

Первоіерархъ обратился къ вѣрующимъ съ духовнымъ словомъ, призывая ихъ воздать хвалу Богу за многія тысячи богослуженій, совершенныхъ въ каѳедральномъ соборѣ за 160 лѣтъ его существованія, и впредь проводить свою жизнь достойно Его благодати. Затѣмъ Владыка Ириней привѣтствовалъ митрополита Николая теплыми словами братской любви, выразивъ радость о томъ, что тѣсное единеніе архіереевъ Зарубежной Церкви являетъ себя не только въ усердномъ попеченіи каждаго архiерея о ввѣренныхъ ему приходахъ, но и въ готовности Первоiерарха посѣщать всѣ предѣлы Церкви, являя ея единство и узы единой семьи и братскаго общенія всѣхъ ея вѣрныхъ чадъ. Послѣ богослуженій на территоріи расположеннаго неподалеку Музея искусствъ состоялась торжественная трапеза. Вечеромъ же въ соборѣ состоялся особый хоровой концертъ въ честь праздника и 160 лѣтъ жизни прихода, объединившій болѣе 50 голосовъ во славу Божію.

À l’invitation de l’Évêque diocésain de Grande-Bretagne et d’Europe occidentale, Son Excellence l’Évêque Irénée de Londres et d’Europe occidentale, le Premier Hiérarque de l’Église orthodoxe russe à l’étranger, Son Éminence le Métropolite Nicolas d’Amérique de l’est et de New York, s’est rendu à Genève afin de présider les offices de la fête, dans la 160e année depuis la fondation de la cathédrale.
Apportant avec lui l’icône miraculeuse de la Mère de Dieu de Koursk, dite « de la Racine », le Premier Hiérarque a été accueilli à la cathédrale le samedi soir pour les vigiles de la fête. Monseigneur Irénée a célébré la litie et la bénédiction des pains ; à la fin des matines, le Métropolite est monté sur l’estrade épiscopale pour accomplir le rite de l’Exaltation de la Croix. Concélébraient avec les hiérarques les clercs de la cathédrale : les archiprêtres Paul Tsvetkoff et Émilien Pocinok, le prêtre Antoine Barros, l’archidiacre Dométien (Redko) et le diacre Alexis Suharov, ainsi que des clercs des régions environnantes, réunis à Genève pour ce rite : les archiprêtres Jean Grigoriță, de la paroisse de Luxembourg, et Paul Golynski, de Bâle, les prêtres Vladimir Svystun, de Berne, et Aviv Saliou-Diallo, de Vevey, ainsi que le protodiacre Michel Vernaz, de Vevey.
Le rite de l’Exaltation, qui n’est accompli que par un évêque dans une grande cathédrale, constitue une belle commémoration de l’événement ancien et se célèbre chaque année à Genève avec une solennité toute particulière. À son terme, le Métropolite Nicolas a oint les fidèles d’huile bénite, tandis que Monseigneur Irénée distribuait les fleurs sanctifiées par l’eau de rose versée sur la Croix au cours du rite.
Le dimanche matin, jour même de la fête, Monseigneur Irénée a accueilli à la cathédrale les deux hiérarques à la retraite qui résident au sein du diocèse : son prédécesseur sur le siège de Genève, Son Éminence l’Archevêque Michel, et l’ancien Évêque vicaire du diocèse, Son Excellence l’Évêque Alexandre. Après que la sainte icône de Koursk eut été accueillie sous le porche, le Premier Hiérarque a été reçu avec le pain et le sel sur les marches de la cathédrale ; il a ensuite été revêtu de ses ornements sur l’estrade épiscopale, puis les Heures ont été lues. Le dimanche, le prêtre Georges Tytov, de Frauenfeld, et le diacre Gabriel Gigauri, de Lyon, se sont également joints au clergé, ainsi que des clercs de l’Église orthodoxe géorgienne.
Les quatre hiérarques ont concélébré la Divine Liturgie de la fête, magnifiquement chantée par le chœur de la cathédrale de Genève. Le Premier Hiérarque a adressé aux fidèles une parole spirituelle, les exhortant à rendre gloire à Dieu pour les milliers d’offices divins célébrés en la cathédrale au cours de ses 160 années d’existence, et à continuer de mener une vie digne de Sa grâce. Monseigneur Irénée a ensuite souhaité la bienvenue au Métropolite Nicolas par de chaleureuses paroles d’amour fraternel, exprimant sa joie de voir les liens étroits qui unissent les hiérarques de l’Église hors frontières se manifester tant dans le dévouement de chaque évêque aux paroisses confiées à ses soins que dans la disponibilité du Premier Hiérarque à visiter l’Église dans toute son étendue, témoignant ainsi de son unité et des liens familiaux et fraternels qui unissent tous ses fidèles. Le Métropolite a, à son tour, salué Monseigneur Irénée, ses frères hiérarques, le clergé et tous les fidèles, et a offert à la cathédrale une icône des saints Martyrs impériaux.
À l’issue des offices, un banquet a été donné dans l’enceinte du Musée des arts voisin. Puis, le soir, un concert choral exceptionnel a eu lieu dans la cathédrale en l’honneur de la fête et des 160 années de vie de la paroisse, réunissant plus de 50 voix à la gloire de Dieu.
