SUNDAY 5 / 18 DECEMBER 2022: On the weekend of the 27th Sunday after Pentecost, the Divine Services at the Cathedral of the Exaltation of the Cross in Geneva, Switzerland, were headed by the Ruling Bishop of the Diocese, His Grace Bishop Irenei of London and Western Europe, during a regular Archpastoral visitation to the Cathedral.
Arriving Saturday afternoon from the festal services celebrated that morning in Vevey, Bishop Irenei served at the customary All-night Vigil and met with members of the parish clergy in the evening. On Sunday morning, His Grace was met at the doors of the Cathedral and vested upon his cathedra, and proceeded to head the Divine Liturgy, co-served by the Archpriests Pavel Tsvetkoff and Emilian Pochinok, together with Archdeacon Dometian (Redco). As is now customary in Geneva, the Cathedral was simply overflowing with faithful of a multitude of nationalities who came to worship the Living God and receive the Mysteries of eternal life.
Offering a homily on the Apostle reading of the day, in which St Paul instructs the faithful to ‘Put on the whole armour of God, that you may be able to stand against the wiles of the devil. For we do not wrestle against flesh and blood, but against principalities, against powers, against the rulers of the darkness of this age, against spiritual hosts of wickedness in the heavenly places’ (Ephesians 6.11, 12), Vladyka Irenei reminded the worshippers that ‘there are whole realms, spiritual realms, involved in our struggles in this life — realms that go beyond what we immediately see in the world around us’, and that ‘our struggle against sin and evil is not solely a struggle against what is fallen within ourselves, nor only against what is fallen in human society; it is also a struggle against fallen spirits who wage war against the holiness God creates in each of us.’
But we rejoice, Vladyka continued, to know ‘that a man with spiritual vision will see not only the real presence and activity of the demons, but also the spiritual reality of God’s presence in our world. He will see the grace the Lord freely and bountifully bestows upon the whole of creation. He will recognise the spiritual armour that God grants to those who wish to take it. He will see angels speaking with greater authority than any demon. He will see that, however great the spiritual battle, or however powerful and numerous our enemies, God provides His children with every defence necessary to defeat them.’
At the conclusion of the Divine Liturgy, the Bishop joined the clergy and faithful for a meal prepared by the sisterhood, and took evident delight in being present for a portion of the rehearsal of the Cathedral’s children’s choir, which was practicing the music for the Nativity of Christ. After these events, the Bishop chaired a regular meeting of the Cathedral Parish Council, which, amongst its regular items of consideration, deliberated the planning of various pilgrimages and youth activities for 2023.

ВОСКРЕСЕНЬЕ 5 / 18 ДЕКАБРЯ 2022 г.: В Неделю 27-ю по Пятидесятнице богослужения в Кресто-Воздвиженском соборе Женевы, Швейцария, возглавил управляющий епархией Преосвященнейший епископ Лондонский и Западно-Европейский Ириней, который совершил очередной архипастырский визит.
Прибыв в субботу днем после Литургии в Веве, епископ Ириней отслужил уставное Всенощное бдение, а вечером встретился с духовенством и прихожанами. Воскресным утром Его Преосвященство был встречен у дверей храма, облачен на кафедре, а затем возглавил Божественную литургию в сослужении протоиереев Павла Цветкова и Емилиана Починка, и архидиакона Дометиана (Редко). Традиционно в Женеве, собор был переполнен верующими, состоящими из множества национальностей, пришедшими поклониться Живому Богу и приобщиться к Таинствам вечной жизни.
Провозглашая проповедь на Апостольское чтение дня, в котором святой апостол Павел наставляет верующих: «Облекитесь во всеоружие Божие, чтобы вам можно было стать против козней диавольских, ибо наша брань не против крови и плоти, но против начальств, против властей, против мироправителей тьмы века сего, против духов злобы поднебесной» (Ефесянам 6:11, 12), – Владыка Ириней напомнил молящимся, что «существуют целые сферы, духовные сферы, вовлеченные в нашу борьбу в этой жизни, — сферы, которые выходят за пределы того, что мы непосредственно видим в окружающем нас мире», и что «наша борьба с грехом и злом — это не только борьба с падением внутри нас самих, и не только с падением в человеческом обществе; это также борьба с падшими духами, которые ведут войну против святости, которую Бог созидает в каждом из нас».
«В то же время мы радуемся, — продолжил владыка, — зная, что человек с духовным видением увидит не только реальное присутствие и деятельность нечистых духов, но и духовную реальность присутствия Божия в нашем мире. Он увидит благодать, которую Господь даром и щедро дарует всему творению. Он распознает духовную броню, которую Бог дает тем, кто желает ее принять. Он увидит ангелов, обладающих большей силой, чем любой демон. Он увидит, что, какой бы великой ни была духовная битва или какими бы могущественными и многочисленными ни были наши враги, Бог обеспечивает Своих детей всяческой защитой, необходимой для победы над ними».
По окончании Божественной литургии владыка присоединился с духовенством и верующими к трапезе, приготовленной сестричеством, и с явным удовольствием присутствовал на спевке соборного детского хора, который репетировал песнопения к празднику Рождества Христова. Затем Его Преосвященство провел очередное заседание соборно-приходского совета, на котором среди поточных нужд обсуждались вопросы планирования различных паломничеств и молодежных мероприятий на 2023 год.
