A major new study of the history of the Bishops of the Diocese of Great Britain and Western Europe is published, with an interactive timeline.

9 / 22 DECEMBER 2025: Today the Diocese is pleased to announce publication on its web site of a major study of its Apostolic inheritance, in the form of a new scholarly text by our Ruling Bishop, His Grace Bishop Irenei of London and Western Europe, entitled The Apostolic Inheritance of the Diocese of Great Britain and Western Europe: Her Hierarchs and Pastoral Governance, from 1919-2026.

The study traces in detail the history of the Hierarchs who have served in the ROCOR’s territories of Western Europe and the British Isles across the 106-year history of our Diocese. For each Hierarch — including all the Diocese’s Ruling Bishops and their Vicars — a history is provided, as well as a summary of their works within the Diocese during the years of their appointment. The text also treats of the joint history of continental Europe and the British Isles during the past century: at times being a single Diocese, at times separate diocesan entities. The study includes notable information on some of the Diocese’s most renowned Hierarchs, including St John the Wonderworker, Archbishop Nikodem of Richmond and Great Britain, Archbishop Anthony of Geneva and Western Europe, and many others.

Additionally, we publish at the same time a new Interactive Timeline of the Hierarchs of the Diocese, which provides a concise visual history of the governance of the Diocese, and includes links to each Hierarch’s information in the new study. 9 / 22 ДЕКАБРЯ 2025 г.: Сегодня епархия с радостью объявляет о публикации на своем официальном сайте крупного научно-исторического исследования, посвященного ее апостольскому наследию. Исследование представлено в виде нового научного труда Правящего архиерея епархии, Его Преосвященства епископа Лондонского и Западно-Европейского Иринея, под названием «Апостольское наследие Великобританской и Западно-Европейской епархии: ее архиереи и пастырское управление (1919–2026)» (на английском языке).

В данном труде подробно прослеживается история архиереев, нёсших служение на канонических территориях Русской Православной Церкви Заграницей в Западной Европе и на Британских островах на протяжении 106-летней истории епархии. Для каждого архиерея — включая всех Правящих архиереев епархии и их викариев — приводится исторический очерк, а также обзор их трудов и служения в пределах епархии в годы их назначения. В исследовании также рассматривается совместная история континентальной Европы и Британских островов за прошедшее столетие: в периоды их существования как в составе единой епархии, так и в качестве отдельных епархиальных образований. Труд содержит ценные сведения о ряде наиболее известных архиереев епархии, включая святителя Иоанна чудотворца, архиепископа Ричмондского и Великобританского Никодима, архиепископа Женевского и Западно-Европейского Антония и многих других.

Одновременно с этим публикуется новая Интерактивная хронология архиереев епархии, представляющая собой наглядный обзор истории епархиального управления и содержащая ссылки на сведения о каждом архиерее в новом исследовании. Хронология доступна в трех языковых версиях:

9 / 22 DECEMBRE 2025 : Le diocèse a la joie d’annoncer aujourd’hui la publication sur son site officiel d’une importante étude historique consacrée à son héritage apostolique. Cette publication prend la forme d’un nouvel ouvrage scientifique de l’Évêque dirigeant du diocèse, Son Excellence Monseigneur Irénée de Londres et d’Europe occidentale, intitulé « L’Héritage apostolique du diocèse de Grande-Bretagne et d’Europe occidentale : ses hiérarques et son gouvernement pastoral (1919–2026) » (en langue anglaise).

Cette étude retrace de manière détaillée l’histoire des hiérarques ayant exercé leur ministère sur les territoires canoniques de l’Église Orthodoxe Russe Hors Frontières en Europe occidentale et dans les Îles Britanniques au cours des 106 années d’existence du diocèse. Pour chaque hiérarque — y compris l’ensemble des évêques dirigeants du diocèse et leurs vicaires — est présentée une notice historique, accompagnée d’un résumé de leurs travaux et de leur action pastorale au sein du diocèse durant les années de leur charge. L’ouvrage traite également de l’histoire commune de l’Europe continentale et des Îles Britanniques au cours du siècle écoulé, tantôt réunies en un seul diocèse, tantôt constituées en entités diocésaines distinctes. L’étude contient en outre des informations remarquables concernant plusieurs des hiérarques les plus illustres du diocèse, parmi lesquels saint Jean le Thaumaturge, l’archevêque Nicodème de Richmond et de Grande-Bretagne, l’archevêque Antoine de Genève et d’Europe occidentale, ainsi que bien d’autres.

Parallèlement, est également mise en ligne une nouvelle Chronologie interactive des hiérarques du diocèse, offrant une présentation visuelle synthétique de l’histoire de son gouvernement et comprenant des liens vers les notices consacrées à chaque hiérarque dans la nouvelle étude.
