To the Venerable Clergy, God-Loving Monastics and Pious Faithful, Children of the Diocese of Great Britain and Western Europe
Dear in Christ, Fathers, Brothers and Sisters:
Christ is risen! Truly, He is risen!
On this most sacred of feasts, it is my profound joy to be able once again to greet you with the peace and blessings of Jesus Christ our Saviour, risen in divine glory and lifting up the whole of the human race into eternity. May He Who, having stooped low and come even to us in our unworthiness, Who took Adam and Eve by the hand and lifted them out of the tombs of death, and Who showed an empty tomb to be the fulfilment of the promise of generations, today raise up your hearts, also, to the joy known to our ancestors and which spreads from His tomb to all the world.
In the bright days ahead of us, as we continue in our Paschal joy, we shall each proclaim and hear many times the words first uttered by St Mary Magdalene: ‘Christ is risen!’ My most fervent prayer is that these will not be for us merely words, but a heartfelt confession of the deepest mystery and reality of our faith — a confession which, every time it is spoken, represents a promise made in the Christian heart to live wholly by this truth. As children of God Most High, we cannot live like those who have no faith, even as we must not live like those who have no hope. Our lives are grounded in the Truth, incarnate and personified. We know Him, we strive to love Him, and we must follow Him. We must do so in times of joy and prosperity, knowing that ‘every perfect gift is from above’ (James 1.17) and that only in the resurrected Christ is there meaning to the gifts experienced in this life. We must follow Him, too, in times of sorrow and suffering, knowing that the Lord Who died and rose from the grave is the only One Who can heal the conflicts man forges in this life. This is our witness to the world, as it has been since the time of the Holy Apostles: Christ has defeated death and the devil; He is the ‘way, truth and Life’ of the world (cf. John 14.6) and we are His children, and we live to honour Him Who brings us to the glory of His Father, through the Holy Spirit. The world around us forgets Him in its revelries and frivolities, and ignores Him in its periods of war and strife; but our message will ever be the same. Christ is risen, and the path that He reveals — from the Cross to the tomb and into the heavenly Kingdom — is the only path that will save mankind.
Be redoubled in your conviction, dear children of His Church. Do not let the voices of this age — of political rivalry, worldly confession, nationalistic enterprise or divisive sub-humanity — render the zeal of your faith lukewarm. Do not respond in kind to the provocations of this generation. Rather, make the confession of Christ’s resurrection the bedrock of your life in the world: respond to provocations with the peaceful quietude that comes from the assurance of God’s sovereignty and reign. React to attacks with the gentle confidence that comes from being united to Him Who was mocked and did not revile, and Who, by His silence, had the final word. Where there is war and conflict (and may the Lord be merciful to our generation, in which we have so much of this), react with the bold confession of the peace that comes only from God. Hold fast to the faith of our Fathers. Stand boldly in the revelation of eternity. Let no one put words into your mouths except the saints of God, who have taught us to say with all our soul: ‘Christ is risen!’ And so let these be our words, and the true confession of our hearts, now and forever!

Дорогие во Христе, отцы, братья и сестры:
Христос Воскресе! Воистину Воскресе!
В этот священнейший Праздников Праздник я испытываю глубокую радость, что могу еще раз приветствовать вас миром и благословением Спасителя нашего Иисуса Христа, воскресшего в Божественной славе и вознесшего в Вечность наш человеческий род. Пусть сегодня Тот, Кто, смирившись до зела, снизошел к нам в нашем недостоинстве, Кто взял Адама и Еву за руку и выхватил их из объятий преисподней, и Кто показал пустой гроб как исполнение обетования для многих поколений, воздвигнет и ваши сердца к радости, известной нашим предшественникам и распространяющейся от Его гроба во всю Вселенную.
В предстоящие светлые дни, продолжая нашу пасхальную радость, каждый из нас будет много раз провозглашать и слышать слова, впервые произнесенные святой Марией Магдалиной: «Христос воскресе!» Это не просто изречение, но сердечное исповедание глубочайшей тайны и реальности нашей веры — исповедание, которое каждый раз, когда оно произносится, представляет собой обещание, данное в христианском сердце, жить всецело согласно этой истины. Будучи чадами Всевышнего Господа, мы не можем жить, как те, у кого нет веры, равно как и мы не должны жить, как те, у кого нет надежды. Наша жизнь основана на Истине, воплощенной и олицетворенной. Мы знаем Его, устремляемся любить Его и должны следовать за Ним. Мы должны делать это во времена радости и благополучия, зная, что «всякий совершенный дар — свыше есть» (Иак. 1, 17) и что только в воскресшем Христе имеют смысл дары, востребованные в этой жизни. Мы также должны следовать за Ним и во времена скорби и страданий, зная, что Господь, умерший и воскресший из гроба, — единственный, Кто может умиротворить вражду и распри, которые человек творит в этой жизни. Вот наше свидетельство миру, так было со времен святых апостолов: Христос победил смерть и диавола; Он есть «путь, истина и жизнь» мира (ср. Ин. 14, 6), а мы — Его чада и живем, чтобы чтить Того, Кто приводит нас во славу Своего Отца через Святого Духа. Мир вокруг нас забывает Его в своем легкомыслии и весельях, и игнорирует Его в периоды войн и раздоров; но наше послание всегда будет неизменным. Христос воскрес, и путь, который Он открывает — от Креста ко гробу, а затем в Царствие Небесное — единственный, который спасет человечество.
Укрепляйтесь в вашей вере, дражайшие чада Его Церкви. Не позволяйте произволениям века сего — политическим противоборствам, мирскому мировоззрению, националистическим побуждениям или сеющим разногласия расчеловечившимся личностям — поколебать ревность вашей веры. Не отвечайте подобным на наущения этого времени. Лучше сделайте исповедание Воскресения Христова сердцевиной своей жизни в мире: отзывайтесь на провокации мирным спокойствием, которое исходит от уверенности в верховенстве и всемогуществе Господа. Реагируйте на нападения с мягкой непоколебимостью, которая исходит от единения с Тем, Кого высмеивали, но не посрамили, и Кто в Своем молчании сказал последнее слово. Там, где есть война и конфликт (и да будет Господь милостив к нашему поколению, в котором так много этого зла), реагируйте твердым исповеданием мира, который исходит только от Господа. Крепко держитесь веры наших Отцов. Смело стойте в откровении Вечности. Никто да не вложит иного слова в ваши уста, кроме исходящего от угодников Божьих, которые научили нас провозглашать от всего сердца: «Христос воскресе!»

Chers Pères, Frères et Sœurs :
Le Christ est ressuscité !
En cette fête la plus sainte, c’est pour moi une profonde joie de pouvoir une fois de plus vous saluer dans la paix et les bénédictions de Jésus-Christ notre Sauveur, ressuscité dans Sa gloire divine et élevant le genre humain tout entier dans l’éternité. Puisse Celui qui, après s’être abaissé et venu jusqu’à nous dans notre indignité, après avoir pris Adam et Ève par la main et les avoir fait sortir des tombeaux de la mort, montrant ainsi qu’un tombeau vide était l’accomplissement de la promesse des générations, puisse-t-il donc aujourd’hui élever aussi vos cœurs vers la joie qu’a connue nos ancêtres et qui se répand depuis son tombeau dans le monde entier.
Dans les beaux jours qui nous attendent, alors que nous prolongerons notre joie pascale, nous proclamerons et entendrons chacun, à plusieurs reprises ces paroles prononcées pour la première fois par sainte Marie-Madeleine : « Le Christ est ressuscité ! » Ma prière la plus fervente est que cette phrase ne soit pas pour nous de simples paroles, mais une confession sincère du Mystère le plus profond et de la réalité de notre Foi, une confession qui, à chaque fois qu’elle est prononcée, représente la promesse faite dans le cœur chrétien de vivre pleinement par cette vérité. En tant qu’enfants du Dieu Très-Haut, nous ne pouvons pas vivre comme ceux qui n’ont pas de foi, tout comme nous ne devons pas vivre comme ceux qui n’ont pas d’espérance. Nos vies sont fondées sur la Vérité, incarnée et personnifiée. Nous Le connaissons, nous nous efforçons de L’aimer, et nous devons Le suivre. Nous devons le faire dans les temps de joie et de prospérité, sachant que « tout don parfait vient d’en haut » (Jacques 1.17) et que ce n’est que dans le Christ ressuscité que les dons reçus dans cette vie ont une signification véritable et sacrée. Nous devons également Le suivre dans les moments de chagrin et de souffrance, sachant que le Seigneur qui est mort et ressuscité du tombeau est le seul qui peut guérir les conflits que l’homme forge dans cette vie. Tel est notre témoignage au monde, comme c’est le cas depuis l’époque des Saints Apôtres : le Christ a vaincu la mort et le diable ; Il est « le chemin, la vérité et la vie » du monde (cf. Jean 14.6) et nous sommes Ses enfants, et nous vivons pour honorer Celui qui nous amène à la gloire de Son Père, par le Saint-Esprit. Le monde qui nous entoure L’oublie dans les réjouissances et les frivolités, et L’ignore dans les périodes de guerre et de conflits ; mais notre message sera toujours le même. Le Christ est ressuscité, et le chemin qu’Il révèle - de la Croix au tombeau et au Royaume céleste - est le seul chemin qui sauvera l’humanité.
Soyez redoublés de conviction, chers enfants de Son Église. Ne laissez pas les voix de cette époque - celles de la rivalité politique, de la confession mondaine, des projets nationalistes ou de la sous-humanité qui divise - rendre tiède le zèle de votre foi. Ne répondez pas de la même manière aux provocations de cette génération. Faites plutôt de la confession de la résurrection du Christ le fondement de votre vie dans le monde: répondez aux provocations avec la quiétude paisible qui vient de l’assurance de la souveraineté et du règne de Dieu. Réagissez aux attaques avec la douce confiance qui vient du fait d’être unis à Celui qui a été moqué et qui n’a pas injurié et qui, par Son silence, a eu le dernier mot. Là où il y a des guerres et des conflits (et que le Seigneur soit miséricordieux envers notre génération, dans laquelle nous en avons tant), réagissez par la confession audacieuse de la paix qui ne vient que de Dieu. Tenez fermement dans la Foi de nos Pères. Tenez-vous hardiment dans la révélation de l’éternité. Que personne ne mette dans votre bouche des paroles autres que celles que les saints de Dieu nous ont appris à dire de toute notre âme : « Le Christ est ressuscité ! » Et que telles soient nos paroles et la véritable confession de nos cœurs, maintenant et pour toujours !
