12 / 25, NOVEMBER 2023: From Wednesday 22nd November to Saturday 25th November, the annual pastoral convocation of the clergy of the Diocese of Great Britain and Western Europe took place in the Church of the Nativity of Christ and St Nicholas in Florence, Italy. The gathering brought together more than 45 clergy from ten countries of continental Europe, the British Isles and Ireland, to spend several days together in prayerful unity, discussing the ongoing development of parish activities and the challenges of pastoral service in the modern world.
This year, the convocation of the diocesan clergy was honoured with the visit of the First Hierarch of the Church Abroad, His Eminence Metropolitan Nicholas of Eastern America and New York, who, following his enthronement a year ago, made during these days his first archpastoral visit to the Western European Diocese. The presidium was occupied by the Ruling Bishop of the Diocese, His Grace Bishop Irenei of London and Western Europe, the Vicar Bishop of the Diocese, His Grace Bishop Alexander of Vevey, and Archpriest Pavel Tsvetkov, a cleric of the Geneva Cathedral and the senior most clergyman of the Diocese.
The official opening was marked on Thursday, 23rd November, with the celebration of the Divine Liturgy in the Diocese’s beautiful Florentine church — the oldest Russian Orthodox Church in Italy and the Orthodox pearl of the city, which this year has celebrated the 120th anniversary of its founding. The Divine Service was accompanied by magnificent singing from the local church choir. On the opening day of the conference, the Rector of the parish, Archpriest Georgy Blatinsky, celebrated his birthday, and ‘Many Years!’ was proclaimed for him by the great host of his brother clergy. Then, following breakfast, the clergy, led by the hierarchs, moved to the lower church to begin their work.
In his welcoming remarks, Bishop Irenei spoke about the development of the Diocese in 2022-2023, introducing to his brethren the new clergy and parishes that have appeared over the past year on the map of the diocesan territory, which has significantly increased its presence both in continental Europe and in the British Isles.
Then Vladyka the First Hierarch presented a report on the ever-memorable Heads of the ROCOR, his immediate predecessors, Metropolitans Lavra (+2008) and Hilarion (+2022), sharing his personal memories of the years when he performed various Church obediences under their leadership. His Eminence Metropolitan Nicholas called on every clergyman carefully to protect and cherish the ancient traditions of piety brought from Imperial Holy Rus’ and preserved over the course of a century by the shepherds and faithful of the Church Abroad, scattered across different countries and continents. On this same day, the ever-memorable hierarch Archbishop Seraphim (Dulgov) of Brussels and Western Europe, the former Ruling Bishop of the Diocese and who departed unto the Lord exactly twenty years ago, was also remembered with a funeral prayer.
After discussing the Metropolitan’s report and communicating with the Head of the Church Abroad, a meeting was held with the clergy, where many spoke about the achievements and urgent needs of the flock entrusted to them, the challenges of the time and the peculiarities of local service. Particular attention was paid to the discussion of the spiritual care of numerous refugees from Ukraine, who have abundantly poured into the Diocese’s parishes throughout western Europe, as well as all kinds of assistance that was and can be provided to them in the conditions of integration in western societies. During the discussion, satisfaction was expressed by the hierarchs with the sacrificial service of our clergy and parishioners in helping their neighbours.
After lunch, there followed a presentation by Archpriest Georgy Blatinsky about the history of the Russian Orthodox Church in Florence, which included a visit to the upper and lower churches and the parish museum. The clergy having concluding their morning labours, they then departed on an excursion into central Florence to visit the museum complex of Santa Maria Novella, and other sites. In the evening the Divine Services were served, after which the clergy continued their meetings and discussions regarding pastoral and parish ministry.
On Friday, 25th November, the convocation continued its fruitful work, starting the day with the Divine Liturgy. Following a discussion on the performance of Church marriages, led by the Ruling Bishop, and a conversation about various liturgical matters, a significant event of the second day of the conference was a pilgrimage visit to the Florence Cathedral (‘the Duomo’), where, standing before the relics of St John the Baptist, Apostle Andrew the First-Called and Saint John Chrysostom, a moleben was served, led by Metropolitan Nicholas. The harmonious singing of a polyphonic male choir comprised of diocesan clergy, under the direction of Bishop Irenei, shook the walls of the site, carrying Orthodox prayer to thousands of surprised listeners from visitors to this historical landmark.
The second working day of the conference concluded with the solemn All-Night Vigil, headed by the First Hierarch in concelebration with the bishops of the Diocese and its clergy. The next morning, Saturday 25th November, the entire host of assembled clerics concelebrated with the Hierarchs at the Divine Liturgy on the day of St John the Merciful, Patriarch of Alexandria, receiving communion at the single Chalice of the Holy Mysteries of Christ. At the Small Entrance, the cleric of the local church, Priest Oleg Tsurcan, was awarded the right to wear the kamilavka, in recognition of his years of work for the benefit of the Mother Church.
At the farewell meal, the clergy expressed their shared desire to gather regularly in full force in the future, emphasising the importance of the pastoral convocation in uniting the clergy and fruitfully discussing pressing issues of pastoral life, in search of active answers to all the challenges of our time.
In his final address, the Metropolitan, having blessed everyone, indicated that all the honourable clergy of Great Britain and Western Europe, despite the distance between continents, will continue to be in his heart, prayers and good thoughts, wishing everyone good health and abundant grace from God in their service in for the benefit of the Mother Church. Inspired by prayer and communication with like-minded people, the clergy left for various countries of Western Europe, leaving indelible impressions of the pastoral conference in their memory.
Metropolitan Nicholas, Bishop Irenei and several Priests remained in Florence to serve the Sunday service on the occasion of the feast day of St John Chrysostom, which the Holy Church celebrates on the 25th week after Pentecost.

В этом году собрание духовенства почтил своим визитом Первоиерарх РПЦЗ Митрополит Восточно-Американский и Нью-Йоркский Николай, совершивший, после интронизации, свой первый архипастырский визит в пределы Западно-Европейской епархии. В президиуме расположились Правящий архиерей епархией Преосвященнейший епископ Лондонский и Западно-Европейский Ириней, викарный епископ Вевейский Александр, протоиерей Павел Цветков – ключарь женевского кафедрального собора и старейший клирик епархии.
Официальное открытие ознаменовалось в четверг 23 ноября Божественной Литургией в прекрасном флорентийском храме – старейшей русской церкви на территории Италии, православной жемчужине города, празднующей в этом году 120-летие со своего основания. Богослужение сопровождало великолепное пение местного церковного хора. В день открытия конференции настоятелю храма протоиерею Георгию Блатинскому, который отмечал свой День Рожденья, было провозглашено Многолетие! После завтрака духовенство во главе с иерархами переместилось в нижний храм, чтобы начать работу.
В приветственном слове Епископ Ириней, рассказал о развитии епархии в 2022-2023 годах, представив собратьям новых клириков и приходы, которые появились за прошедший год на карте епархии, значительно увеличившей свое присутствие как в континентальной Европе так и на Британских островах.
Затем Владыка-Первоиерарх прочитал доклад о приснопамятных Главах РПЦЗ Митрополитах Лавре (+2008) и Иларионе (+2022), поделившись своими личными воспоминаниями в те годы, когда он исполнял различные церковные послушания под их управлением. Высокопреосвященнейший Митрополит Николай призвал каждого священнослужителя тщательно оберегать и лелеять древние традиции благочестия, вынесенные из Святой Руси и сохраненные на протяжении столетия пастырями и верными Русской Зарубежной Церкви, рассеянной по разным странам и континентам. В этот день заупокойном молитвой был также помянут приснопамятный владыка Серафим (Дулгов), Архиепископ Брюссельский и Западно-Европейский, отошедший ко Господу ровно 20 лет назад.
После обсуждения доклада Митрополита и общения с Главой Зарубежной Церкви состоялось заседание с духовенством, где много священнослужителей рассказали о достижениях и насущных нуждах вверенной им паствы, вызовах времени и особенностях служения на местах. Особое внимание было уделено обсуждению духовного окормления многочисленных беженцев с Украины, обильно влившихся в зарубежные приходы по всей Западной Европе, а также всевозможной и разноликой помощи, которая предоставлялась и может им быть предоставлена в условиях интеграции в западных обществах. Во время прений было высказано удовлетворение жертвенным служением нашего духовенства и прихожан в помощи своему ближнему.
После обеда состоялась презентация протоиерея Георгия Блатинского об истории Русской Православной Церкви во Флоренции с посещением храма и церковного музея. Затем духовенство отбыло в храмово-музейный комплекс Санта-Мария-Новелла, и другие места в центре города. После вечернего богослужения духовенство продолжило заседания и дискуссии, касающиеся пастырско-приходского служения.
В пятницу 25 ноября совещание продолжило свою плодотворную работу, начав день с Божественной Литургии. После обсуждения вопросов заключения церковных браков под руководством Правящего архиерея и беседы о различных богослужебных вопросах, знаменательным событием второго дня конференции стало паломническое посещение кафедрального собора Флоренции (‘la Duomo’), где перед мощами св. Иоанна Крестителя, апостола Андрея Первозванного и святителя Иоанна Златоуста был отслужен молебен, возглавленный Митрополитом Николаем. Слаженное пение многоголосого мужского хора, состоящего из нашего духовенства, под управлением епископа Иринея, содрогало стены древнего храма, разнося православную молитву тысячам удивленных слушателей из посетителей этой исторической достопримечательности.
Второй рабочий день конференции закончился торжественным Всенощным Бдением, возглавленным Первоиерархом в сослужении епископов и всего духовенства. Также и в субботу 25 ноября все пастыри, диакона и церковнослужители сослужили Владыкам за Божественной Литургией в день памяти святителя Иоанна Милостивого, патриарха Александрийского, причастившись у единой Чаши Святых Христовых Тайн. На Малом Входе клирик местного храма иерей Олег Цуркан, за многолетние труды на благо Матери-Церкви, был удостоен правом ношения камилавки.
На прощальной трапезе духовенством было высказано всеобщее пожелание собираться регулярно в полном составе и в дальнейшее время, подчеркнув важность пастырской конференции в деле сплочения духовенства и плодотворного обсуждения насущных вопросов пастырской жизни, в поисках деятельных ответов на все вызовы современности.
В завершительном обращении Владыка-Митрополит, благословив каждого, указал, что все честное духовенство Западной Европы, несмотря на расстояние между континентами, будет и впредь находится в его сердце, молитвах и добрых помыслах, пожелав каждому крепкого здравия и обильной Божией благодати в их служении на благо Матери-Церкви. Окрыленные молитвой и общением с единомышленниками, священнослужители отбыли в разные страны Западной Европы, оставив в своей памяти неизгладимые впечатления от пастырского совещания.
Митрополит Николай, епископ Ириней и несколько священников остались во Флоренции, чтобы помолиться за воскресным богослужением по случаю дня памяти святителя Иоанна Златоуста, день которого Святая Церковь празднует в неделю 25-ю по Пятидесятнице.

12 / 25 NOVEMBRE 2023 : Du mercredi 22 novembre au samedi 25 novembre, la réunion pastorale annuelle du clergé du Diocèse de Grande-Bretagne et d’Europe occidentale a eu lieu dans l’église de la Nativité du Christ et Saint-Nicolas à Florence, en Italie. La réunion a réuni plus de 45 membres du clergé, venus de dix pays d’Europe continentale, de Grande-Bretagne et d’Irlande, pour discuter pendant plusieurs jours, dans une unité de prière, du développement futur des activités paroissiales et des questions du service pastoral dans le monde moderne.
Cette année, la réunion du clergé a été honorée par la visite du Premier Hiérarque de l’EORE, Son Éminence le métropolite Nicolas d’Amérique de l’Est et de New York, qui, après son intronisation, a effectué dans ses jours sa première visite archipastorale au diocèse d’Europe occidentale. Le présidium était occupé par l’évêque dirigeant du diocèse, Son Excellence l’évêque Irénée de Londres et d’Europe occidentale, le vicaire du Diocèse, l’évêque Alexandre de Vevey, et l’archiprêtre Paul Tsvetkoff de la cathédrale de Genève — le plus ancien représentant du clergé du diocèse.
L’ouverture officielle a été marquée jeudi le 23 novembre par la Divine Liturgie dans la belle église florentine — la plus ancienne église russe d’Italie, la perle orthodoxe de la ville, célébrant cette année le 120e anniversaire de sa fondation. Le service était accompagné de magnifiques chants de la chorale de l’église locale. Le jour de l’ouverture de la conférence, ‘Des nombreuses années’ était proclamé pour le recteur de l’église, l’archiprêtre George Blatinsky, qui a célébré son anniversaire. Après le petit-déjeuner, le clergé, dirigé par les hiérarques, se dirigea vers le temple inférieur pour commencer le travail.
Dans son discours de bienvenue, Mgr Irénée a parlé du développement du diocèse en 2022-2023, présentant à ses frères les nouveaux clergés et paroisses qui sont apparus au cours de l’année écoulée sur la carte du diocèse, ce qui a considérablement accru sa présence tant en Europe continentale et dans les îles britanniques.
Ensuite, le Premier hiérarque a lu un rapport sur ces prédécesseurs toujours-mémorables, les métropolites Lavra (+2008) et Hilarion (+2022), partageant ses souvenirs personnels des années où il accomplissait diverses obédiences ecclésiales sous leur direction. Son Éminence le métropolite Nicolas a appelé chaque membre du clergé à protéger et à chérir soigneusement les anciennes traditions de piété apportées de la Sainte Russie Impériale et préservées au cours d’un siècle par les bergers et les fidèles de l’Église russe à l’étranger, dispersés dans différents pays et continents. Ce jour-là, l’évêque Seraphim (Dulgov), archevêque de Bruxelles et d’Europe occidentale, décédé il y a exactement 20 ans, a également été rappelé par une prière funéraire.
Après avoir discuté le rapport du métropolite et communiqué avec le chef de l’Église à l’étranger, une réunion a eu lieu avec le clergé, où les membres du clergé ont parlé des réalisations et des besoins urgents du troupeau qui leur a été confié, des défis de l’époque et des particularités de service local. Une attention particulière a été accordée à la discussion sur l’assistance spirituelle aux nombreux réfugiés d’Ukraine, qui ont afflué en abondance dans les paroisses de toute l’Europe occidentale, ainsi que sur toutes sortes d’assistance qui leur ont été et peuvent leur être fournies dans les conditions d’intégration dans les sociétés occidentales. Au cours du débat, la satisfaction a été exprimée pour le service sacrificiel de notre clergé et de nos paroissiens pour aider leurs voisins.
Après le déjeuner, l’archiprêtre George Blatinsky a présenté l’histoire de l’Église orthodoxe russe à Florence, avec une visite de l’église et son musée. Après une discussion sur la célébration des mariages dans l’église, dirigée par l’évêque Irénée, et une conversation sur diverses questions liturgiques, un événement important de la deuxième journée de la conférence a été une visite de pèlerinage à la cathédrale de Florence (‘la Duomo’), où, devant les reliques de saint Jean-Baptiste, l’apôtre André le Premier Appelé et saint Jean Chrysostome, un moleben a été servi, dirigé par le métropolite Nicolas. La deuxième journée de travail de la conférence s’est terminée par des vigiles solennelles, dirigée par le Premier Hiérarque, dans la concélébration des évêques et de tout le clergé. Le samedi 25 novembre également, tous les pasteurs, diacres et membres du clergé ont concélébré avec les évêques à la Divine Liturgie du jour de la mémoire de saint Jean le Miséricordieux, Patriarche d’Alexandrie, communiant à l’un seul Calice des Saints Mystères du Christ. À la Petite Entrée, le clerc de l’église locale, le prêtre Oleg Tsurkan a obtenu le droit de porter une kamilavka, pour de nombreuses années de travail au profit de l’Église.
Lors du repas d’adieu, le clergé a exprimé le désir de se réunir régulièrement et en force à l’avenir, soulignant l’importance de la conférence pastorale pour unir le clergé et discuter de manière fructueuse des questions urgentes de la vie pastorale, à la recherche de réponses actives à tous les défis de notre temps.
Dans son discours final, le Métropolite, après avoir béni tout le monde, a indiqué que tout le clergé de l’Europe occidentale, malgré la distance entre les continents, restera dans son cœur, ses prières et ses bonnes pensées, et il souhaite à tous une bonne santé et une abondante grâce de Dieu dans leur service au profit de l’Église Mère. Inspiré par la prière et la communication avec des autres, le clergé est parti pour leurs divers pays d’Europe occidentale, laissant dans leur mémoire des impressions indélébiles de la conférence pastorale.
Le métropolite Nicolas, l’évêque Irénée et plusieurs prêtres sont restés à Florence pour prier lors de l’office dominical à l’occasion de la fête de saint Jean Chrysostome, que la Sainte Église célèbre la 25e semaine après la Pentecôte.
