Statement by Bishop Irenei of London and Western Europe, 15th September 2023.
Since we note with sorrow that some in the media persist in misrepresenting our views, with no attempt to speak directly with us at any stage, we restate here what we have openly said since the war in Ukraine began: We stand wholly against the war and we call for it to end. I do not know how one can be clearer than this. The war is an evil. It cannot be justified. God will bless the peacemakers, as the Lord Himself says.
In the Church we are not politicians. We in the Church Abroad are not linked with any state or government, nor any political ideology, as some in the media are nevertheless swift to assume. Indeed, there is something of a ‘witch hunt’ on in certain circles at this moment, in which anyone may be claimed to be politically aligned this way or that, assigned as such simply by accusation — generally in a manner that serves the political interests of the one doing the ‘reporting’ rather than having any bearing on reality. But this leads to falsehoods, and too often these bring real harm to those striving to live peacefully and to do their part to bring peace to terrible situations, who are wrongly accused of supporting wars they do not support, or encouraging regimes with which they in fact have no connection.
A tree should be judged by its fruits. Since the war began, I and my brother bishops in Europe have stood against it whole-heartedly and vocally. We have built upon this stance with action. We have raised large sums of money that have been transmitted to humanitarian relief funds in Ukraine. We have received formal thanks from Ukrainian church leaders for the support of their suffering people. We have opened and operated food banks to provide food to Ukrainian refugees in the UK and Europe. We have assisted in housing and supporting refugee families. We have run a summer camp for children of Ukrainian refugee families in Europe. We have welcomed refugee priests and integrated them into our parishes. We have opened a new parish in Switzerland to cater to large groups of Ukrainian refugees in a region where we had no parish before. We help to the greatest degree we are able and we pray for peace with special prayers composed for the cessation of this war, which are read in every parish in our diocese at every Liturgy.
This is not a political question for us but a religious one. We stand against all war, and this war in particular, as we stand also against bloodshed, and against persecution in all cases — whoever may be their perpetrators. We have already stated many times that the military actions in Ukraine are wrong. We have also stated that the persecution of prayerful Christians within Ukraine is wrong. While for some this might raise the uncomfortable reality that things are not always black-and-white, since the present situation implicates actors on all sides in the current war in acts that are wrong and from which the innocent must be protected, this dark and confusing web of evil is precisely why we stand against the tragedy of war itself. Yes, we wrote against the persecution of Orthodox Christians in Ukraine by civil authorities — a reality that is well documented and against which there have been calls raised by religious leaders all across the world — just as we also wrote earlier against the bloodshed and killing of our Ukrainian brethren by those attacking their land from without. Is the one evil to be ignored, simply so that we might avoid being slandered by those who will use the care for those innocents as a spurious claim of support for those harming others? I should hope that humanity is more mature than this, and that we can see that war leads to suffering everywhere. Love ought to lead us to compassion and care for everyone, without litmus tests of nationality, ethnicity, or political agenda.
Let me repeat once more, for the sake of clarity: our Church Abroad is not united to any State, is not aligned with any government, and does not bow to or toe the line of any political agenda. Claims otherwise may arise out of ignorance or wilful misrepresentation, but in any case they are false.
This should, and does, mean that we are free to bear the responsibility that we have without constraint: to speak out against evil whenever it rears its head, and by whomever’s hands, and to care for those who are suffering, by whomever’s hands. There are those who will always try to politicise this, but we must and will ignore these false accusations and strive simply to follow the example of Christ. In the face of this sinister war, with the bloodshed it continues to cause and the persecution of innocents that it fosters, let us strive together to help all those innocents, and to bring a swift and longed-for end to this blight on human dignity.

Поскольку мы с сожалением отмечаем, что некоторые представители средств массовой информации продолжают искажать наши взгляды, не пытаясь, ни на каком этапе, говорить с нами напрямую, мы повторяем здесь то, о чем мы открыто заявили с начала войны в Украине: Мы безоговорочно выступаем против войны, и мы призываем положить ей конец. Я не знаю, как можно выразиться яснее этого. Эта война – зло. Это не может быть никак оправдано. Господь благословляет миротворцев, как Он сам об этом говорит.
В Церкви мы не являемся политиками. Зарубежная Церковь, рассеянная по всему миру, не связана ни с одним государством или правительством, ни с какой-либо политической идеологией, как, тем не менее, поспешили предположить некоторые сотрудники СМИ. Действительно, в настоящий момент в определенных кругах идет что-то вроде «охоты на ведьм», когда любого человека можно обвинить в том или ином политическом предпочтении или присвоить его путем огульного обвинения – как правило, таким образом, который не имеет никакого отношения к реальности, но служит политическим интересам того, кто делает подобные «сообщения». Это приводит ко лжи, и она довольно часто приносит реальный вред тем, кто искренне стремится жить мирно и внести свой вклад в установление мира в текущем ужасном положении. Поскольку их ошибочно обвиняют в поддержке войн, которые они в действительности не поддерживают или в поощрении режимов, к которым они, на самом деле, не имеют никакого отношения.
О дереве следует судить по его плодам. С самого начала войны я и мои братья-архиереи в Европе всем сердцем и голосом выступали против нее. Мы подкрепили эту позицию действиями. Мы собрали большие суммы денег, которые были переданы в фонды гуманитарной помощи в Украине. Мы получили официальную благодарность от епископата Украинской Православной Церкви за поддержку их многострадального народа. Мы открыли и управляем продовольственными банками для обеспечения продуктами питания украинских беженцев в Великобритании и Европе. Мы оказывали помощь в размещении и поддержке семей беженцев. Мы организовали летние лагеря для детей из семей украинских беженцев в Европе. Мы приветствовали священников-беженцев и интегрировали их в наши приходы. Мы открыли новый приход в Швейцарии для обслуживания больших групп украинских беженцев в регионе, где раньше у нас не было прихода. Мы помогаем, насколько можем, и молимся о мире и о прекращении этой войны, используя специальные молитвы, которые читаются в каждом приходе нашей епархии на каждой Божественной литургии.
Для нас это не политический вопрос, а религиозный. Мы выступаем против любой войны, и этой войны в частности, как мы выступаем также против кровопролития и против преследований во всех случаях — кто бы ни был их виновниками. Мы уже неоднократно заявляли, что военные действия на Украине неправильны. Мы также заявляли, что гонения на благочестивых христиан на территории Украины неправомерны. Хотя для некоторых это может вызвать неприятную реальность того, что все не всегда черно-белое, поскольку нынешняя ситуация вовлекает участников со всех сторон в нынешней войне в действия, которые являются неправильными и от которых необходимо защищать невиновных, это темная и запутанная паутина зла – вот почему мы выступаем против самой трагедии войны. Да, мы писали против преследования православных христиан в Украине со стороны гражданских властей (реальность, которая хорошо задокументирована и против которой звучали призывы религиозных лидеров по всему миру), точно так же, как мы писали ранее против кровопролития и убийств наших украинских братьев и сестер теми, кто нападает на их землю извне. Следует ли игнорировать одно зло просто для того, чтобы избежать клеветы со стороны тех, кто будет использовать заботу о невинных людях как ложное заявление о поддержке тех, кто причиняет вред другим? Я имею надежду, что человечество станет более зрелым, чем сегодня, и что мы сможем четко осознать, что война повсюду приводит к страданиям. Любовь должна вести нас к состраданию и заботе обо всех, без лакмусовых тестов национальности, этнической принадлежности или политической повестки дня.
Повторю еще раз для ясности: наша Зарубежная Церковь не объединена ни с одним государством, не связана ни с каким правительством, не повинуется и не подчиняется какой-либо политической программе. Утверждения иного могут возникнуть по незнанию или умышленному искажению фактов, но в любом случае, они являются ложными.
Это должно значить, и означает, что мы свободны нести ответственность, которая у нас есть, без ограничений: выступать против зла всякий раз, когда оно поднимает голову и творится чей бы то не было рукой, и заботиться всеми возможными средствами о тех, кто страдает. Есть личности, кто всегда будет пытаться политизировать это, но мы должны и будем игнорировать все ложные обвинения и стремиться следовать примеру Христа. Перед лицом нынешней зловещей войны с кровопролитием, которое она продолжает вызывать, и с преследованием невинных, которое она поощряет, давайте вместе постараемся помочь всем невинным и положить быстрый и долгожданный конец этому пагубному воздействию на человеческое достоинство.

Constatant avec tristesse que certains médias persistent à déformer nos opinions, sans essayer à aucun moment de nous parler directement, nous réaffirmons ici ce que nous avons ouvertement dit depuis le début de la guerre en Ukraine : Nous sommes totalement opposés à la guerre et nous appelons à ce que cela cesse. Je ne sais pas comment on peut être plus clair que cela. La guerre est un mal. Cela ne peut pas être justifié. Dieu bénira les artisans de paix, comme le Seigneur Lui-même le dit.
Dans l’Église, nous ne sommes pas des politiciens. Nous, dans l’Église Orthodoxe Russe à l’étranger, ne sommes liés à aucun État ou gouvernement, ni à aucune idéologie politique, comme certains médias sont néanmoins prompts à le supposer. En effet, il y a actuellement dans certains milieux une sorte de « chasse aux sorcières », où n’importe qui peut être considéré comme étant politiquement aligné d’une manière ou d’une autre, désigné comme tel simplement par accusation – généralement d’une manière à servir les intérêts politiques de celui qui fait le « reportage » plutôt que d’avoir une quelconque incidence sur la réalité. Mais cela conduit à des mensonges, et trop souvent ceux-ci causent un préjudice réel à ceux qui s’efforcent de vivre en paix et de contribuer à ramener la paix dans de terribles situations, qui sont accusés à tort de soutenir des guerres qu’ils ne soutiennent pas, ou d’encourager des régimes avec lesquels ils n’ont en fait aucun lien.
Un arbre doit être jugé à ses fruits. Depuis le début de la guerre, mes frères évêques en Europe et moi-même nous y sommes opposés avec véhémence et sans réserve. Nous avons bâti cette position par l’action. Nous avons collecté d’importantes sommes d’argent qui ont été transférées aux fonds d’aide humanitaire en Ukraine. Nous avons reçu des remerciements formels de la part des dirigeants de l’Église ukrainienne pour le soutien apporté à leur peuple qui souffre. Nous avons ouvert et géré des banques alimentaires pour fournir de la nourriture aux réfugiés ukrainiens au Royaume-Uni et en Europe. Nous avons aidé à loger et à soutenir des familles de réfugiés. Nous organisons un camp d’été pour les enfants de familles ukrainiennes réfugiées en Europe. Nous avons accueilli des prêtres réfugiés et les avons intégrés dans nos paroisses. Nous avons ouvert une nouvelle paroisse en Suisse pour accueillir de grands groupes de réfugiés ukrainiens dans une région où nous n’avions pas de paroisse auparavant. Nous aidons autant que nous le pouvons et nous prions pour la paix avec des prières spéciales composées pour la cessation de cette guerre qui sont lues dans chaque paroisse de notre diocèse à chaque Liturgie.
Pour nous, ce n’est pas une question politique mais religieuse. Nous nous opposons à toute guerre, et à cette guerre en particulier, comme nous nous opposons également à toute effusion de sang et à toute persécution, quels qu’en soient les auteurs. Nous avons déjà déclaré à plusieurs reprises que les actions militaires en Ukraine étaient mauvaises. Nous avons également déclaré que la persécution des pieux chrétiens en Ukraine était une erreur. Même si, pour certains, cela pourrait faire apparaître la réalité inconfortable selon laquelle les choses ne sont pas toujours en noir et blanc, puisque la situation actuelle implique les acteurs de toutes les parties de la guerre actuelle dans des actes répréhensibles et contre lesquels les innocents doivent être protégés, cette tableau sombre et déroutant du mal est précisément la raison pour laquelle nous nous opposons à la tragédie de la guerre elle-même. Oui, nous avons écrit contre la persécution des chrétiens orthodoxes en Ukraine par les autorités civiles – une réalité bien documentée et contre laquelle des chefs religieux du monde entier ont lancé des appels – tout comme, plus tôt, nous avons également écrit contre l’effusion de sang entre nos frères ukrainiens par ceux qui attaquent leur terre de l’extérieur. Le mal doit-il être ignoré, simplement pour éviter d’être calomniés par ceux qui utiliseront le soin apporté à ces innocents comme une fausse déclaration de soutien à ceux qui nuisent aux autres ? J’espère que l’humanité est plus mature que cela et que nous pouvons voir que la guerre mène partout à la souffrance. L’amour devrait nous conduire à la compassion et à l’attention envers chacun, sans tests probants de nationalité, d’appartenance ethnique ou d’agenda politique.
Permettez-moi de le répéter une fois de plus, par souci de clarté : notre Église Orthodoxe Russe à l’étranger n’est unie ou liée à aucun État, n’est alignée avec aucun gouvernement et ne s’incline devant aucun agenda politique. D’autres affirmations résultent de l’ignorance ou de déclarations délibérément fausses, mais dans tous les cas elles sont erronées.
Cela devrait signifier, et signifie effectivement, que nous sommes libres d’assumer la responsabilité qui nous incombe sans contrainte : dénoncer le mal chaque fois qu’il survient de qui que ce soit, et prendre soin de ceux qui souffrent, par qui que ce soit. Il y a ceux qui essaieront toujours de politiser cela, mais nous devons ignorer ces fausses accusations et nous nous efforcerons simplement de suivre l’exemple du Christ. Face à cette sinistre guerre, avec l’effusion de sang qu’elle continue de provoquer et la persécution d’innocents qu’elle favorise, luttons ensemble pour aider tous ces innocents et mettre un terme rapide et tant attendu à ce fléau qui porte atteinte à la dignité humaine.
