Pilgrimages
Organised by the Diocese and its Parishes
The tradition of pilgrimage
Every year, between 10-20 pilgrimages are organised by the Diocese and its parishes, providing the faithful with the opportunity to visit sacred sites associated with the Orthodox Faith all across the world. Pilgrimage is an essential part of Orthodox life and spirituality, and undertaking a pilgrimage — whether an extensive multi-week journey or a simple day-pilgrimage — brings important depth to each Christian’s spiritual growth.
Not only are pilgrimages regularly organised to renowned sites of Orthodoxy abroad (for example, to Greece, Serbia, Russia, Macedonia, Athos and so on), but our Diocese is also home to a remarkable multitude of ‘local saints’ who have shone forth in our territories: the multitudinous saints of the British Isles, the saints of Helvetica (modern Switzerland), the martyrs and hierarchs of ancient Lugdunum (now Lyon, France), the Apostles, martyrs and luminaries of Rome and all Italy, and many others.
The pilgrimages organised centrally through the Diocesan Chancellery are linked on this page; and you will find, below, a continuously-updated listing of pilgrimage related news items from across the parishes of the Diocese, all of which invite pilgrims from other places to join them.
