‘Rush towards the saints of these islands… make no excuses!’: Homily by Bishop Irenei on the Sunday of All Saints of the British Isles.

« Courez vers les saints de ces îles… ne cherchez aucune excuse ! » : Homélie de l’évêque Irénée en la fête de tous les saints des Îles Britanniques.

The following homily was preached by His Grace Bishop Irenei of London and Western Europe in the Cathedral of the Nativity of the Mother of God and the Holy Royal Martyrs, London, on the Sunday of All Saints of the British Isles, 8th / 21st June 2026.
In the Name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit:
My brothers and sisters: If you want to know what is wrong with the society around us, then hear this: the saints whose memory we keep today are here to provide the answer. Do you wish to know what can be done to turn the tide of a cultural decline that leads man ever more into despair and suffering, towards that which might at last redeem him of his selfish desires? The same ones cry out to you with the answer. Their voice is stentorian, and the sole reason that modern man does not hear it is because he has stuffed up his ears with the cotton wool of ignorance and destraction. Their presence is everywhere, and the only reason that modern man does not see them is because he has covered his eyes with the blinding darkness of forgetfulness and pride.
Yet they are here — the great saints of these islands, the God-pleasers who have shone forth over millennia in this divinely-preserved British Isles, whose blessed memory our Church keeps today. They have not fled, they have not disappeared; it is only the present age that thinks so, if it thinks of them at all, because it has chosen to approach life apart from that ‘great cloud of witnesses’ (Hebrews 12.1) that has embraced these lands like the mist that rises up from the seas that surround us on all sides.
England, Ireland, Scotland, Wales, Northern Ireland — whatever we may call the portions of these islands on which we dwell today, however we may articulate their heritages, they mean nothing unless they are understood as describing the very place where Almighty God transformed sinners into saints and made manifest to all creation that man can attain unto union with his Lord. Without that, what are these islands other than outcroppings of stones and dirt? What is their history other than an unfolding saga of sin? But when that true history is embraced — the Christian history, the Orthodox history, of these islands — then we begin to realise that we stand on sacred soil, surrounded by sanctified seas, which have been used by our ancestors, those sacred God-pleasers, to transform their lives and the heart of all peoples. And we realise that surrounding us are not only strangers in this present day, or ethereal memories of historical figures from our past; but there remain present with us even now, here, those saints of these British Isles who are the flesh and blood of their sacred history. These saints are not figures of the past, though many of them lived here long ago; they are living children of the living God, alive with us, and urging us onwards into Life.
If you want, dear Christians, to know what is Truth, listen to these, your spiritual ancestors. If you want to know righteousness, learn from their examples, and follow them. If you want to know love, follow the examples of those who walked here where you walk, and bore divine Love into the very fabric of this land. And if you want the culture around you to be changed, to at last turn from wickedness and cling to good, then venerate, honour and mightily proclaim the legacy of the saints who shone forth here: for they are the heavenly protectors of this place. They are mightier in power than any government, stronger than any opposing evil, and ready to hear our intercessions — ready to respond.
If you do not yet know their names, learn them! If you do not have icons of them, seek them out and place them in your home churches. If you do not know the hymns in their honour, make the effort to locate them and learn how to sing with your ancestors in honour of your protectors. Don’t make excuses: those who truly wish to be united to this spiritual heritage will find the help of the saints themselves providing every support and guidance. Rush towards them, my dear ones. Flee to their refuge! Seek their counsel, and they will guide you into the Lord’s eternal Kingdom.
Glory to our God, Who is wondrous in His Saints! Holy Saints of the British Isles, pray to Him for us! Amen.

Братья и сестры! Если вы желаете узнать, что не такъ съ окружающимъ насъ обществомъ, услышьте сіе: святые, память которыхъ мы нынѣ совершаемъ, здѣсь, чтобы дать намъ отвѣтъ. Желаете ли вы знать, что можетъ обратить вспять потокъ культурнаго упадка, все болѣе увлекающаго человѣка въ отчаяніе и страданіе, и направить его къ тому, что наконецъ сможетъ освободить его отъ его эгоистическихъ желаній? Тѣ же самые святые взываютъ къ вамъ съ отвѣтомъ. Ихъ гласъ могучъ и громогласенъ; и единственная причина, по которой современный человѣкъ его не слышитъ, заключается въ томъ, что онъ заткнулъ свои уши ватой невѣжества и разсѣянности. Ихъ присутствіе повсюду; единственная причина, по которой современный человѣкъ ихъ не видитъ, заключается въ томъ, что онъ покрылъ свои очи ослѣпляющей тьмой забвенія и гордыни.
И все же они здѣсь — великіе святые сихъ острововъ, угодники Божіи, просіявшіе на протяженіи тысячелѣтій на этихъ богохранимыхъ Британскихъ островахъ, благословенную память которыхъ нынѣ совершаетъ наша Церковь. Они не ушли, они не исчезли; лишь нынѣшній вѣкъ такъ думаетъ — если вообще вспоминаетъ о нихъ, — ибо онъ избралъ путь жизни внѣ того «облака свидѣтелей» (Евр. 12, 1), которое объяло эти земли, словно туманъ, восходящій отъ морей, окружающихъ насъ со всѣхъ сторонъ.
Англія, Ирландія, Шотландія, Уэльсъ, Сѣверная Ирландія — какъ бы мы ни называли части сихъ острововъ, на которыхъ нынѣ живемъ, какъ бы ни описывали ихъ наслѣдіе, все это не имѣетъ смысла, если мы не понимаемъ ихъ какъ тѣ самыя мѣста, гдѣ Всемогущій Богъ преображалъ грѣшниковъ во святыхъ и являлъ всему творенію, что человѣкъ можетъ достигнуть единенія со своимъ Господомъ. Безъ этого что представляютъ собой эти острова, кромѣ выступовъ камня и земли? Что есть ихъ исторія, кромѣ разворачивающейся повести грѣха? Но когда принимается эта истинная исторія — христіанская исторія, православная исторія сихъ острововъ, — тогда мы начинаемъ осознавать, что стоимъ на священной землѣ, окруженной освященными морями, которыя наши предки, эти святые угодники Божіи, использовали для преображенія своей жизни и сердецъ всѣхъ народовъ. И мы понимаемъ, что вокругъ насъ пребываютъ не только незнакомцы нынѣшняго времени и не безплотныя воспоминанія объ историческихъ личностяхъ прошлаго; но съ нами и нынѣ, здѣсь, пребываютъ святые сихъ Британскихъ острововъ, являющіеся плотью и кровью ихъ священной исторіи. Эти святые — не фигуры прошлаго, хотя многіе изъ нихъ жили здѣсь въ давніе времена; они — живыя чада Живаго Бога, живущія съ нами и призывающія насъ впередъ, къ Жизни.
Если вы желаете, дорогіе христіане, узнать, что есть Истина, внимайте имъ — вашимъ духовнымъ предкамъ. Если желаете познать праведность, учитесь у ихъ примѣровъ и слѣдуйте имъ. Если желаете познать любовь, послѣдуйте примѣру тѣхъ, кто ходилъ здѣсь, гдѣ нынѣ ходите вы, и кто внесъ Божественную Любовь въ саму ткань этой земли. И если вы желаете, чтобы окружающая васъ культура измѣнилась, чтобы наконецъ отвернулась отъ нечестія и прилѣпилась къ добру, тогда поклоняйтесь, почитайте и громко возвѣщайте наслѣдіе святыхъ, просіявшихъ здѣсь: ибо они — небесные покровители этого мѣста. Они могущественнѣе всякой власти, сильнѣе всякаго противящегося зла, и готовы услышать наши молитвенныя прошенія — готовы отвѣтить.
Если вы еще не знаете ихъ именъ — узнайте ихъ! Если у васъ нѣтъ ихъ иконъ — найдите ихъ и помѣстите въ своихъ домашнихъ церквахъ. Если вы не знаете пѣснопѣній въ ихъ честь — приложите усиліе, найдите ихъ и научитесь воспѣвать вмѣстѣ со своими предками въ честь вашихъ покровителей. Не ищите оправданій: тѣ, кто истинно желаетъ соединиться съ этимъ духовнымъ наслѣдіемъ, найдутъ, что сами святые подаютъ всякую помощь и руководство. Спѣшите къ нимъ, дорогіе мои. Прибѣгайте къ ихъ прибѣжищу! Ищите ихъ наставленія — и они поведутъ васъ въ вѣчное Царство Господне.
Слава Богу нашему, дивному во святыхъ Своихъ! Святые Британскихъ острововъ, молите Его о насъ! Аминь.

И мы понимаем, что вокруг нас пребывают не только незнакомцы нынешнего времени и не бесплотные воспоминания об исторических личностях прошлого; но с нами и ныне, здесь, пребывают святые сих Британских островов, являющиеся плотью и кровью их священной истории. Эти святые — не фигуры прошлого, хотя многие из них жили здесь в давние времена; они — живые чада Живаго Бога, живущие с нами и призывающие нас вперед, к Жизни.

Если вы не знаете песнопений в их честь — приложите усилие, найдите их и научитесь воспевать вместе со своими предками в честь ваших покровителей. Не ищите оправданий: те, кто истинно желает соединиться с этим духовным наследием, найдут, что сами святые подают всякую помощь и руководство. Спешите к ним, дорогие мои. Прибегайте к их прибежищу! Ищите их наставления — и они поведут вас в вечное Царство Господне.

L’homélie suivante a été prononcée par Son Excellence l’évêque Irénée de Londres et d’Europe occidentale en la cathédrale londonienne de la Nativité de la Mère de Dieu et des saints Martyrs Royaux, à l’occasion de la fête de tous les saints des Îles Britanniques, le 8 / 21 juin 2026.
Au Nom du Père, du Fils et du Saint-Esprit !
Mes frères et sœurs : si vous désirez savoir ce qui ne va pas dans la société qui nous entoure, écoutez ceci : les saints dont nous célébrons aujourd’hui la mémoire sont là pour nous donner la réponse. Désirez-vous savoir ce qui peut inverser le cours d’un déclin culturel qui entraîne toujours davantage l’homme vers le désespoir et la souffrance, et le conduire vers ce qui pourra enfin le délivrer de ses désirs égoïstes ? Ces mêmes saints vous crient la réponse. Leur voix est puissante et retentissante ; et la seule raison pour laquelle l’homme moderne ne l’entend pas est qu’il a bouché ses oreilles avec le coton de l’ignorance et de la distraction. Leur présence est partout ; la seule raison pour laquelle l’homme moderne ne les voit pas est qu’il a couvert ses yeux des ténèbres aveuglantes de l’oubli et de l’orgueil.
Et pourtant ils sont ici — les grands saints de ces îles, les bien-aimés de Dieu qui ont resplendi durant des millénaires dans ces Îles Britanniques gardées par Dieu, dont notre Église célèbre aujourd’hui la bienheureuse mémoire. Ils n’ont pas fui, ils n’ont pas disparu ; seul le siècle présent le croit — s’il pense seulement à eux — parce qu’il a choisi d’aborder la vie séparé de cette « grande nuée de témoins » (Héb. 12, 1) qui a embrassé ces terres comme la brume qui s’élève des mers nous entourant de toutes parts.
L’Angleterre, l’Irlande, l’Écosse, le Pays de Galles, l’Irlande du Nord — quels que soient les noms que nous donnons aux parties de ces îles où nous demeurons aujourd’hui, quelle que soit la manière dont nous exprimons leurs héritages, ils ne signifient rien s’ils ne sont pas compris comme désignant le lieu même où le Dieu Tout-Puissant a transformé des pécheurs en saints et manifesté à toute la création que l’homme peut parvenir à l’union avec son Seigneur. Sans cela, que sont ces îles sinon des amas de pierre et de terre ? Qu’est leur histoire sinon un long récit de péché ? Mais lorsque cette véritable histoire est embrassée — l’histoire chrétienne, l’histoire orthodoxe de ces îles — alors nous commençons à comprendre que nous nous tenons sur une terre sacrée, entourée de mers sanctifiées, dont nos ancêtres, ces saints bien-aimés de Dieu, se sont servis pour transformer leur vie et le cœur de tous les peuples. Et nous comprenons que nous ne sommes pas seulement entourés d’étrangers du temps présent, ni de souvenirs éthérés de figures historiques du passé ; mais que demeurent avec nous encore aujourd’hui, ici même, ces saints des Îles Britanniques qui sont la chair et le sang de leur histoire sacrée. Ces saints ne sont pas des figures du passé, bien que beaucoup d’entre eux aient vécu ici il y a longtemps ; ils sont les enfants vivants du Dieu Vivant, vivants avec nous, et nous appelant à avancer vers la Vie.
Si vous désirez, chers chrétiens, connaître la Vérité, écoutez-les, eux qui sont vos ancêtres spirituels. Si vous désirez connaître la justice, apprenez de leurs exemples et suivez-les. Si vous désirez connaître l’amour, suivez l’exemple de ceux qui ont marché ici où vous marchez aujourd’hui, et qui ont porté l’Amour divin jusque dans le tissu même de cette terre. Et si vous désirez que la culture qui vous entoure soit transformée, qu’elle se détourne enfin de l’iniquité pour s’attacher au bien, alors vénérez, honorez et proclamez avec force l’héritage des saints qui ont resplendi ici : car ils sont les protecteurs célestes de ce lieu. Ils sont plus puissants que tout gouvernement, plus forts que tout mal qui s’oppose, et ils sont prêts à entendre nos supplications — prêts à répondre.
Si vous ne connaissez pas encore leurs noms, apprenez-les ! Si vous n’avez pas leurs icônes, cherchez-les et placez-les dans vos églises domestiques. Si vous ne connaissez pas les hymnes composées en leur honneur, faites l’effort de les trouver et d’apprendre à chanter avec vos ancêtres en l’honneur de vos protecteurs. Ne cherchez aucune excuse ! Сeux qui désirent véritablement être unis à cet héritage spirituel verront les saints eux-mêmes leur accorder toute aide et toute direction. Courez vers eux, mes chers enfants. Réfugiez-vous auprès d’eux ! Recherchez leur conseil, et ils vous guideront vers le Royaume éternel du Seigneur.
Gloire à notre Dieu, admirable dans Ses saints ! Saints des Îles Britanniques, priez-Le pour nous ! Amen.
