THURSDAY, 8 / 21 JULY 2022: Following the recent celebration of the Sunday of All Local Saints, the Diocese’s Saints of the British Isles Project is pleased to share an update on the progress of the project’s ongoing work to create a liturgical compendium of all saints of the British Isles. From the project’s organisers, we share the following report:
Over the past year, since the last update on the Saints of the British Isles Project in July 2021, we have continued the slow and patient work of collating and cataloguing all the extant liturgical materials we can find relating to the British Saints in accordance with the Project’s founding decree from His Grace Bishop Irenei of London and Western Europe.
Following the excerpt of the Index that we published last year and appeal for broader involvement, contact was made with many hymnographers and interested Orthodox faithful from around the world. We are pleased to report that after this international appeal, the total number of Divine Services for Saints of the British Isles that the Project has collated has increased to 95: an index of these services is provided with this update, and can be viewed on-line. Recent additions to the collection include a second service to St Edward the Martyr, commemorating the rediscovery of his relics; a Polyelei-rank service to St Theodore of Canterbury in Greek, composed by an Athonite monk; a full Vigil-rank service to St Richard the Pilgrim of Wessex; a Vigil-rank service to St Melangell in Greek; and a Vigil-rank service to St Milburga of Muchwenlock, amongst others.
Through close and ongoing cooperation with the literary estate of Monk Joseph (Lambertsen) of blessed memory, we have also identified further saints for whom Monk Joseph composed services — saints whom the Church’s veneration identifies as originating from, or labouring for at least a part of their life in, the British Isles. In this manner it has been possible to include in our compendium Divine Services composed in honour of St Germanus of Auxerre, St Lupus of Troyes, St Olaf of Norway and St Wilfrid of Sweden.
Another dimension of Phase I of the Project is the compilation of a complete listing of Saints of the British Isles, going beyond those for whom we have extant liturgical materials. Though this is an immense task that will take many years to complete, progress over the past year has been steady. The scholarly and investigative works of many individuals have been referenced already, obtaining information even on many lesser-known saints. For each entry in our compendium, we seek to include a wide variety of data to help appreciate the range of hagiographical and historical sources that attest to the saint; the spread of veneration and devotion to the saint, in part through identifying the number of church dedications and records in pre-schism calendars and martyrologies; and other details — perhaps most importantly, whether there are extant relics and icons of the saint.
Moving forward, now that we are reasonably confident that we have acquired all the extant complete services to the Saints of the British Isles, the co-chairs of the Project will meet personally with Bishop Irenei, in order to begin labours on Phase II: the work of editing the extant services and hymnography into a consistent liturgical language and idiom that harmonises with the contemporary compositions and core liturgical texts of the Church Abroad.
In the meantime, and especially for those who may have missed the appeal the first time round, we continue our appeal for any liturgical materials relating to the British Saints to be sent to our dedicated Project e-mail address. We are particularly interested in whole services to the saints, preferably consisting of hymnography for Vespers, Matins and the Divine Liturgy, but are also interested in acquiring single troparia and kondakia, akathists, canons and individual prayers. If after looking through our most recent excerpt from the Index, any omissions of existing services are spotted, readers are urged to be in contact with us; and also to be in touch if they desire to take part in the further phases of editing of this important project, that in due course will provide an invaluable liturgical and prayerful resource to Orthodox Christians around the world.
May all the Saints who have shone forth in the British Isles pray to God for us!

В соответствии с указом об учреждении проекта, полученном от Преосвященнейшего Епископа Лондонского и Западно-Европейского Иринея, за текущий год, с момента последнего обновления проекта «Святые Британских островов» в июле 2021 года, мы продолжили медленную и щепетильную работу по сопоставлению и каталогизации всех сохранившихся литургических материалов, которые были найдены в отношении британских святых.
После выдержки из Индекса, который мы опубликовали в прошлом году, и призыва к более широкому участию, были установлены контакты со многими литургистами и заинтересованными православными верующими со всего мира. Мы рады сообщить, что после этого международного обращения общее количество богослужений для святых Британских островов, собранных в рамках проекта, увеличилось до 95: перечень этих богослужений прилагается к данному обновлению, и его можно посмотреть на сайте. Недавние дополнения к списку включают вторую службу святому мученику Эдуарду, в день повторного обретения его мощей; полиелейную службу святому Феодору Кентерберийскому на греческом языке, составленную афонским монахом; полное богослужение святому Ричарду Уэссекскому Паломнику; всенощное богослужение прп. Мелангелле отшельнице на греческом языке; и службу с бдением святой Милдбурге из Венлока.
Благодаря тесной и постоянной работе с литературным наследием приснопамятного монаха Иосифа (Ламбертсена) мы выявили и других подвижников, которым о. Иосиф создал богослужения, — святых, которых церковное предание связывает по происхождению или житию с британскими островами. Таким образом, стало возможным включить в наш сборник богослужения, составленные в честь святителей Германа Осерского и Лупа Труаского, св. Олафа Норвежского и св. Вильфрида Шведского.
