16 – 27 MARCH 2022: The wonderworking Kursk-root icon of the Theotokos, one of the most venerated icons of the Church Abroad and indeed of the whole Orthodox diaspora, concluded its visit to London at the Divine Liturgy of the third Sunday of Great Lent: the Sunday of the Cross.
The icon had been welcomed into the Diocese of Great Britain and Western Europe with a formal greeting at the Diocesan Cathedral of the Nativity of the Mother of God and the Holy Royal Martyrs in London on the evening of Wednesday, 3 / 16 March. Brought to the Cathedral from the Synodal Residence in New York by His Grace Bishop Irenei of London and Western Europe, the miracle-working icon was received in procession by the clergy and faithful of the London Cathedral — the Church Abroad’s parish in London that has existed for more than 300 years, and which has welcomed the wonderworking icon into is embrace many times before. Its path strewn with rose-petals by children of the parish and with faithful bearing candles, the icon was formally met at the door of the Cathedral by its Ecclesiarch, Archpriest Vitaly Serapinas, together with other clergy, held aloft so that faithful could pass beneath it on their way into the Divine Services. There followed the Hierarchical Divine Liturgy of the Presanctified Gifts, presided over by the Diocesan Bishop, after which a moleben and the akathist to the Kursk-root icon were sung before it by an enormous number of faithful who had come from a wide region to receive the Divine Mysteries of Christ and venerate this most sacred icon of His holy mother.
The Kursk-root icon, also known as the ‘Hodigitria (Directress) of the Orthodox Diaspora’ has been venerated by Orthodox faithful for more than seven centuries. Under its auspices, Orthodox Christians of every nationality come together to venerate the Mother of God, in whose embrace are united British, French, Russian, Ukrainian, Swiss, Irish, Italian, Latvian, Belgian, American, Spanish, Lithuanian — and every other imaginable background of pious believers present in our diverse Diocese, irrespective of their language or nationality, united wholly in their Orthodox faith and deep love for the Mother of the Saviour. Especially potent in these troubling times were the prayers for unity amongst Orthodox Christians, for a swift end to the terrible bloodshed in Ukraine, and for the restoration of peace in the region, that were offered fervently by the clergy and faithful before the Kursk-root icon, which holds an especial place in the hearts of both Ukrainians and Russians, since its history encompasses both lands and it has played a role in the spiritual heritage of each.
Following its initial reception in London, the icon then spent five days travelling to some of the other parishes in the British Isles — in Cardiff, Cheltenham, Telford, and Wallasey — as well as sanctifying the homes of many parishioners in each of these places: a custom preserved in the ROCOR over the past century, that homes are blessed by the presence of the Kursk-root icon when it travels to the dioceses. Following these visits, the icon returned to London where for three days it was taken to more homes in the capital region and broad surroundings, as well as being present for the veneration of the faithful in the Cathedral for the Presanctified Liturgy of the Holy Forty Martyrs and the Wednesday of the third week of Great Lent.
Subsequently, the holy icon was taken to the parishes in Mettingham and Norwich, where especially large gatherings of faithful came to pray for to the Mother of God, especially grateful for her grace and presence in this tangible way after the period of tribulations recently faced by faithful in that part of the country, as the icon visited homes of faithful from Cambridge, Colchester, and other places in the region. The icon was also taken to the Serbian Orthodox Parish in London, where many faithful came to sing and pray before it.
On its return to London, the icon was present once again the Diocesan Cathedral for the weekend services of the third Sunday of Great Lent: the Sunday of the Adoration of the Cross. By divine Providence, the wonder-working icon of Christ’s mother was therefore present in the centre of the Cathedral next to the Cross of her Son. Once again, the icon brought forth enormous numbers of faithful who came to the Cathedral from every corner of south-eastern England — and some from much further afield — for these final Divine Services at the Cathedral in its presence. For a final time in the Cathedral, the faithful stood before this sacred image and prayed for peace in Ukraine and a swift end to the unjust bloodshed there; for the grace of God to sustain them in the trying times of this life; and for blessings to bring peace to their hearts and to the world.
Thus concluding its visit to London, the wonderworking Kursk-root icon departed for other regions of the Diocese.

16 – 27 МАРТА 2022 г.: Чудотворная Курско-Коренная икона Божией Матери, одна из самых чтимых икон Зарубежной Церкви, да и всего православного Зарубежья, завершила свое пребывание в Лондоне после Божественной литургии 3-й Крестопоклонной недели Великого поста.
Вечером в среду, 3/16 марта икона была торжественно встречена в лондонском кафедральном соборе Великобританской и Западно-Европейской епархии на честь Рождества Богородицы и Святых Царственных Мучеников. Чудотворная святыня, принесенная в собор из Синодальной резиденции в Нью-Йорке Преосвященнейшим епископом Лондонским и Западно-Европейским Иринеем, была принята крестным ходом, духовенством и верующими кафедрального храма — прихода Зарубежной Церкви в Лондоне, существующего уже более 300 лет и который многажды принимал эту величайшую святыню. Ее путь усыпали лепестками роз дети и верующие, несущие свечи, а сама святыня была торжественно встречена у дверей собора его ключарем, протоиереем Виталием Серапинасом, вместе с другими священнослужителями, которые воздвигли ее над головами верующих, входивших в храм на богослужение. Затем была совершена Литургия Преждеосвященных Даров, которую возглавил Управляющий епархией, после чего при огромном стечении верующих, прибывших в храм поклониться святыне и приобщиться Святых Христовых Тайн, был отслужен молебен с акафистом Курской-Коренной иконе Божией Матери.
Курская икона, известная также как «Одигитрия (Путеводительница) православного зарубежья», почитается верующими более семи веков. Под ее покровительством православные христиане всех национальностей собираются вместе, чтобы поклониться Богородице. Среди них: англичане, французы, русские, украинцы, швейцарцы, ирландцы, итальянцы, латыши, бельгийцы, американцы, испанцы, литовцы, а также иные всевозможные благочестивые верующие различного происхождения, из нашей многоликой епархии. Они всецело объединены своей православной верой и глубокой любовью к Матери нашего Спасителя. Особенно горячими в это смутное время были молитвы о единстве православных христиан, о скорейшем прекращении страшного кровопролития на Украине и о восстановлении мира в этой стране, горячо возносимые духовенством и верующими перед Курской святыней, которая занимает особое место в сердцах как украинцев, так и россиян, так как ее история охватывает обе страны и она имеет огромное значение в духовном наследии каждого из этих народов.
После первоначального посещения Лондона икона в течение пяти дней путешествовала по некоторым другим приходам на Британских островах — в Кардиффе, Челтнеме, Телфорде и Уолласи — а также посещала жилища многих прихожан в каждом из этих мест. Обычай, сохранившийся в РПЦЗ за последнее столетие – освящать дома присутствием Курско-Коренной иконы, когда она путешествует по епархиям. После этих посещений икона вернулась в Лондон, где в течение трех дней ее разносили по домам столичного региона и обширных окрестностей, а также она присутствовала для поклонения верующих в соборе на Преждеосвященной литургии в день памяти святых сорока мучеников Севастийских, которая совершалась в среду третьей недели Великого поста.
Впоследствии святыня была доставлена в приходы в Меттингеме и Норидже, куда приходили помолиться Божией Матери особенно много верующих, благодарных за Ее благодать и присутствие в таком осязаемом виде после периода невзгод, недавно пережитых верующими в этой части епархии, так как икона посещала дома прихожан из Кембриджа, Колчестера и других мест региона. Икона также была доставлена в сербский православный приход в Лондоне, где петь и молиться перед ней также пришло много людей.
По возвращении в Лондон святый образ еще раз присутствовал в кафедральном храме на воскресных богослужениях третьей недели Великого поста – Крестопоклонной. По Промыслу Божию чудотворная икона Богородицы находилась в центре храма рядом с Крестом Ее Божественного Сына. В очередной раз святыня собрала огромное количество верующих, собравшихся в кафедральный храм со всех уголков юго-восточной Англии, а некоторые и из дальнего зарубежья, прибывших в заключительные дни присутствия святыни в храме. В последний раз в соборе верующие стояли перед этим священным образом и молились о мире на Украине и скорейшем прекращении там несправедливого кровопролития; чтобы благодать Божья поддерживала их в трудные времена нашей жизни; в молитвенном прошении о водворении мира в их сердцах и во всем мире.
Завершив свое посещение Лондона, чудотворная Курская Коренная икона отбыла в другие регионы епархии.
