15 - 22 OCTOBER 2026: A pilgrimage to the holy places of Georgia, organised by the Geneva Cathedral, is drawing to a close. Thirty-three pilgrims are currently in the final full days of a journey through holy lands that has proceeded in a joyful, prayerful spirit, bearing tangible spiritual fruit.

Archpriest Emilian Pochinok, leader of the pilgrimage, writes:

Over these days, we have visited the ancient monasteries of David-Gareji and Martkopi, associated with the ascetic labours of St David of Gareji and St Antony of Martkopi. In Tbilisi, we visited the house of St Gabriel Urgebadze and the church he built. In Kakheti, we visited the monasteries of Shuamta, Alaverdi and Nekresi, encountering the centuries-old monastic tradition of this land.

A particular spiritual joy for our group was the Sunday Divine Liturgy on 18th October at the Monastery of the Thirteen Assyrian Fathers in Kanda, where I was granted the blessing of concelebrating with Father Seraphim Bit-Kharibi. The pilgrims were able to confess and receive the Holy Mysteries of Christ. Our common prayer and the liturgical singing in Aramaic deeply touched the hearts of those present and contributed greatly to our spiritual strengthening during these days.

In ancient Mtskheta, we visited Jvari Monastery and Svetitskhoveli Cathedral, and at Samtavro Monastery we venerated the relics of St Gabriel. We also visited Shio-Mgvime Monastery, associated with the ascetic labours of St Shio. Our journey continued through the monasteries of the Dzama Gorge — Kintsvisi, Mzovreti and Sarkineti. At Bodbe, we prayed before the relics of St Nina, Equal-to-the-Apostles and Enlightener of Georgia.

During the remaining days, our programme has included visits to the Church of the Holy Right-believing Prince Alexander Nevsky in Tbilisi and the grave of the ever-memorable Archimandrite Vitaly Sidorenko, the churches of Metekhi and Sioni, and the Holy Trinity Cathedral — Sameba.

I am especially glad to see the changes taking place in people during the course of the pilgrimage. Our conversations turn increasingly to questions of faith, prayer, repentance and what needs to change in our own lives. Pilgrims are becoming more attentive to one another, more willing to help and more open in sharing their concerns and experiences. One senses that visiting these holy places touches their hearts and gives them strength to continue their spiritual journey. For me, this is the most precious fruit of our pilgrimage.

The programme is full: each day we set out early and return late in the evening. Fatigue naturally accumulates, but our days are filled with meaning, prayer and the joy of fellowship. In the evening, everyone gratefully welcomes a well-earned rest.

In just two days, we shall be returning home — with gratitude to God, with love for the hospitable land of Georgia and with the hope of coming here again one day. It is our heartfelt desire that the spiritual strengthening we have received here should also bear good fruit in our daily lives, in our families and in our parishes.

During these days, the saints of Georgia have become closer to us. We feel that their prayerful intercession extends to all who love God and place their hope in Him. We believe that their help will continue to accompany us after our return home.
