English:
The present homily was delivered by His Grace Bishop Irenei of London and Western Europe on the Feast of the Mother of God, ‘Joy of All Who Sorrow’, 24 October / 6 November 2026, at the Divine Liturgy Altar Feast of of the parish of the same name in Menton, France.
In the Name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit:
My beloved Fathers, brothers and sisters, who in these latter days can doubt that we inhabit a world filled with an abundance of temptations and sorrows? Around us are constant perils; wars scar the face of the earth; conflicts amongst people divide the brotherhood of man; brothers attack brothers and relationships of love and transformed into occasions for doubt, fear and division. In all these, we perceive our own sinfulness, our brokenness, and the undoubted contribution our passionate weakness makes to such a state of affairs; but we also know that the true author of all division, suffering and sorrow is the enemy of our salvation, the devil himself, who seeks discord and a discouragement of spirit with tireless deliberation.
But today, my beloved, we set our spiritual gaze not only the reality of such sorrow, but on the fact that we are the children of One Who transforms sorrow into joy — and does so not out of obligation, but out of a love born into the world by a mother who grants the world its Saviour. Today we honour the Theotokos, the ever-virgin, the most-pure, the radiant mother of God and, by His own invocation, the mother of all Christians. We honour her especially, on this feast, in reverence of her icon called ‘Joy of All Who Sorrow,’ after which this temple is dedicated: and I implore each of you, as pious children of the Church, to dwell on the profound meaning of this title.
Who comes to God’s mother, except those experiencing sorrows? Are any of us free from the burdens of grief, living out our lives in this world? Is any excepted from sufferings? No — we live in a world in which hearts break through the grief we inflict on one another, and none is left untouched.
Yet we come to her knowing that grief is not the end; sufferings, sorrows — these are elements of the story of our salvation, but they are not its culmination nor its conclusion. The divine gift that makes this story one of redemption is precisely that sorrow is changed; suffering is transformed. We turn to God’s mother, so bound by love to her Son our God, and we see in her precious face one who takes each of these elements of our lives and presents them to her Divine Child with maternal care, imploring that He receive what we offer in our brokenness, and transform it into that which is whole, healed and radiant with His Life.
We present to the Theotokos our sorrows — such meagre gifts to bring the Queen of Heaven! but they are ours — and she receives them with maternal love. She takes each broken heart and draws her Son ever closer to it, and us closer to Him; and in the meeting of our brokenness with His purity, divinity, grace and strength, something happens deep within this heart that He has fashioned. It begins to breathe in a new way. It senses the grace of His Cross, which takes evil and renders good. It tastes the fresh dew of mercy and drinks in the waters of undefeatable Life. And soon we realise that what abides within us are not those sorrows we have brought, but the joy of that true Life.
My dear ones, at times this process is hard and requires forbearance and humility; but the Lord is faithful and true and does not abandon His children to their sorrows. He sends us His mother, to whom we turn with deepest devotion, and she wipes tears from eyes and banishes darkness from hearts, so that what might remain are lives purified, glorified, and all the more fiercely united to her Son.
O most holy Lady: renew in us the joy of life in your Child! Comfort us in our sorrows! Render our darkness light, our hearts bright, and bring us together to the joy of the saints, the unending chorus of praise of the Holy Trinity, and lives emboldened to share that joy and love with our brethren, and with this world, with zeal, strength and wisdom. Amen!

Amen !
