«À travers les siècles, les Apôtres nous crient : “Prends ta croix !”» : Homélie de Son Excellence l’Évêque Irénée de Londres et d’Europe occidentale pour la fête des Saints Apôtres, 2026.

The following homily was preached by His Grace Bishop Irenei of London and Western Europe in Luxembourg on the Feast of the Holy Apostles Peter and Paul, 29th June / 12th July 2026.
In the Name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit:
My dearly beloved in Christ: Once more, despite all our iniquities and shortcomings, the merciful and man-befriending Lord has seen fit to bring us together, that by His Grace we might honour aright the pillars of Orthodoxy, foundation-stones of the Church and all-praised exemplars of missionary zeal: the Holy Apostles Peter and Paul.
You who abide in this God-preserved city, worshipping in this sublime temple, share with the brethren of our newer parish in Rome the honour of keeping this great Feast, not only in concert with all other Christians as one of the pinnacle festal moments of the year, but as your Altar Feast — your ‘second Pascha’ and spiritual centre-point of your parochial lives. May the great champions of the Apostolic choir, Saints Peter and Paul, ever watch over you with the zeal of loving fathers, guiding you in the True Faith with integrity, compassion, and the constant yearning to grow ever closer to Christ our God. And may their heavenly protection preserve this God-pleasing parish until the end of the ages!
In honour of these Apostles, permit me to employ this small word to do that which they, as eminent Archpastors, would always wish to be done in their names: to extend a voice of counsel for the spiritual struggles we face in our modern world. For who in our generation could claim to know better than these sacred Apostles what it means for the life of faith to be a life of true struggle — they who suffered even unto glorious martyrdom for the spreading of the Gospel and the establishment of God’s Law in the hearts of men? They are lights unto this present generation precisely because they speak to us from an era in which the very name ‘Christian’ provoked disdain, fear, anger, persecution and enmity; an era in which the True Faith was embattled against false dogmas and rebellious paganism; an era in which there was a true and real cost to bearing the name of Christ and seeking to follow His commandments. Yes, that was the world of the first century in which they lived; but, my beloved brethren, does it not also describe our world today? Do we not, strangely, face so many of the same struggles as they? Do we not find that their temptations are our own, even though nearly two millennia have passed since they walked the soil of this earth and sailed its seas, to bring the life of the Church to new lands and peoples?
Let me then ask you, in their name: what is different today? Thanks be to our saving Lord, we have many signs of grace and comfort in these latter days, including growth in the Church and a renewal of youth towards lives of faith; yet we are still swamped in the hypocrisies of modernity. We can and should rejoice that trends towards secularism appear to be changing, that modern man is starting to understand its false promises and seek more abiding truth. Yet when we look to the lives of these Apostles, we cannot yet compare our joys with theirs — for their accomplishments are truly beyond measure. In the lives of two men whole nations, lands and people rose out of paganism into the great Mystery of the Life in Christ. Words of counsel were given that we recite and retain even today. Empires were transformed. Centuries and even millennia of cultural norms were overthrown.
What, then, is different today? Surely, there are many ways to answer such a question. But on this Feast, I wish to focus on only one: the weakness of a true spirit of sacrifice in our struggles after Christian life. Too often in this generation, man wishes to attain the lives of the saints without their struggles; he desires the joys of the resurrection without the pains of the Cross. Man wishes to be called a Christian, without seeking truly to unite himself to the self-sacrificing, self-offering, Cross-bearing Christ. But this is not the true way of the Christian. And the holy Apostles are our reminders of this. From across the centuries they speak to each of you, to each of us: take up your cross! Seek struggle, do not seek to flee from it! Prepare for spiritual battle, not emotional comfort!
The Apostles lived, spoke, and were martyred with power because they gave everything to God. Everything. Nothing was held back. They accepted kindnesses and care when it was offered; but they expected nothing, and instead made themselves ready for anything. They were ready to work, to labour, to travel, to be exiled and even imprisoned, to be heard as well as to speak in silence — all for the sake of following their Saviour. They understood that grace is a gift freely given, but the overcoming of the passions in the heart involves a price that must be paid: the price of the willingness to offer up one’s life, one’s energy, and the whole of one’s being in order to receive something new, something better.
My dear ones, let the Apostles speak to us on this tremendous Feast, and let us hear their voices that, as the prokeimenon announces, ‘have gone forth unto all the earth’. Their voice calls us to rise up and live more completely for our God. It calls us to be not only ready but even eager to struggle for Him. It calls us to sacrifice our hearts and our lives, that we may receive true Life. Will we heed this call? May it be so. May our answer be made with our lives, and may we faithfully follow the Apostles into Paradise. Amen!

Вы, пребывающіе въ семъ Богохранимомъ градѣ и молящіеся въ семъ величественномъ храмѣ, раздѣляете съ братіею нашего новаго прихода въ Римѣ честь праздновать сей великій праздникъ — не только вмѣстѣ со всѣми христіанами, какъ одно изъ высочайшихъ торжествъ церковнаго года, но и какъ свой Престольный праздникъ, свою «вторую Пасху» и духовное средоточіе приходской жизни. Да осѣняютъ васъ всегда своимъ попеченіемъ, какъ любящіе отцы, великіе вожди Апостольскаго лика — святые Петръ и Павелъ, наставляя васъ въ Истинной Вѣрѣ съ цѣлостію, состраданіемъ и непрестаннымъ желаніемъ возрастать все ближе ко Христу Богу нашему. И да сохранитъ ихъ небесное предстательство сей Богу благоугодный приходъ до скончанія вѣковъ!
Въ честь сихъ Апостоловъ позвольте мнѣ воспользоваться симъ краткимъ словомъ, дабы совершить то, чего они, какъ великіе Архипастыри, всегда желали бы въ свое имя: преподать наставленіе относительно духовной брани, которую мы ведемъ въ современномъ мірѣ. Ибо кто въ нашемъ поколѣніи можетъ лучше сихъ священныхъ Апостоловъ разумѣть, что значитъ жизнь по вѣрѣ какъ жизнь подлиннаго подвига? Они претерпѣли даже до славнаго мученичества ради распространенія Евангелія и утвержденія закона Божія въ сердцахъ человѣческихъ. Они являются свѣточами и для нынѣшняго поколѣнія именно потому, что говорятъ къ намъ изъ эпохи, въ которой самое имя «христіанинъ» возбуждало презрѣніе, страхъ, гнѣвъ, гоненіе и вражду; изъ эпохи, въ которой Истинная Вѣра вела брань противъ ложныхъ ученій и мятежнаго язычества; изъ эпохи, въ которой ношеніе имени Христова и стремленіе исполнять Его заповѣди имѣли истинную и весьма ощутительную цѣну. Да, таковъ былъ міръ перваго вѣка, въ которомъ они жили; но, возлюбленныя мои, не таковъ ли и нашъ міръ? Не сталкиваемся ли и мы, поразительнымъ образомъ, съ тѣми же самыми испытаніями? Не оказываются ли ихъ искушенія нашими собственными, хотя почти два тысячелѣтія миновали съ того времени, какъ они шествовали по землѣ и плавали по морямъ, принося жизнь Церкви новымъ странамъ и народамъ?
Посему позвольте мнѣ спросить васъ отъ ихъ имени: что же нынѣ иное? Благодареніе нашему Спасителю Господу: въ послѣднія времена мы видимъ многія знаменія благодати и утѣшенія, въ томъ числѣ возрастаніе Церкви и обновленіе молодежи, обращающейся къ жизни по вѣрѣ; однако мы все еще утопаемъ въ лицемѣріяхъ современной эпохи. Мы можемъ и должны радоваться тому, что стремленія къ секуляризму начинаютъ ослабѣвать, что современный человѣкъ начинаетъ постигать ложность его обѣщаній и искать истины непреходящей. Но, взирая на жизнь сихъ Апостоловъ, мы еще не можемъ сравнить наши радости съ ихъ радостями, ибо ихъ дѣянія поистинѣ неизмѣримы. Черезъ жизнь двухъ человѣкъ цѣлыя народы, страны и племена восстали отъ язычества къ великой тайне жизни во Христѣ. Были даны наставленія, которыя мы читаемъ и сохраняемъ донынѣ. Преобразились имперіи. Были низложены культурныя устои цѣлыхъ столѣтій и даже тысячелѣтій.
Что же нынѣ иное? Конечно, отвѣтовъ можетъ быть много. Но въ сей праздникъ я желаю обратить вниманіе лишь на одно: на ослабленіе подлиннаго духа жертвенности въ нашемъ стремленіи къ христіанской жизни. Слишкомъ часто человѣкъ нашего времени желаетъ достигнуть жизни святыхъ безъ ихъ подвиговъ; желаетъ радости воскресенія безъ скорбей Креста. Онъ хочетъ именоваться христіаниномъ, не стремясь въ дѣйствительности соединиться съ Самимъ Христомъ — Самопожертвовавшимъ Себя, Самопринесшимъ Себя въ жертву и Несущимъ Крестъ. Но это не истинный путь христіанина. И святые Апостолы непрестанно напоминаютъ намъ объ этомъ. Сквозь вѣка они обращаются къ каждому изъ васъ, къ каждому изъ насъ: возьми крестъ твой! Ищи подвига, а не бѣги отъ него! Приготовляйся къ духовной брани, а не ищи душевнаго удобства!
Апостолы жили, проповѣдывали и приняли мученическую кончину съ силою потому, что отдали Богу все. Все. Ничего не удержали для себя. Они съ благодарностью принимали милость и попеченіе, когда оно имъ оказывалось; но ничего не ожидали, а напротивъ, готовили себя ко всему. Они были готовы трудиться, подвизаться, странствовать, идти въ изгнаніе и даже въ темницу, говорить и хранить молчаніе — все ради слѣдованія своему Спасителю. Они разумѣли, что благодать есть даръ, свободно подаваемый Богомъ; но преодолѣніе страстей въ сердцѣ требуетъ цѣны, которую необходимо заплатить: цѣны готовности принести въ жертву собственную жизнь, собственныя силы и все свое существо, дабы воспріять нечто новое, нечто лучшее.
Возлюбленныя мои, да говорятъ къ намъ Апостолы въ сей великій праздникъ, и да услышимъ мы ихъ гласъ, который, какъ возвѣщаетъ прокименъ, «изыде во всю землю». Ихъ гласъ призываетъ насъ воспрянуть и жить для Бога нашего полнѣе. Онъ призываетъ насъ быть не только готовыми, но даже жаждущими подвизаться ради Него. Этотъ гласъ призываетъ насъ принести въ жертву наши сердца и нашу жизнь, дабы воспріять Жизнь истинную. Послушаемся ли мы сего призыва? Да будетъ такъ. Да отвѣтимъ мы на него всею нашею жизнью, и да послѣдуемъ вѣрно за святыми Апостолами въ Рай. Аминь.

В честь сих Апостолов позвольте мне воспользоваться сим кратким словом, дабы совершить то, чего они, как великие Архипастыри, всегда желали бы в свое имя: преподать наставление относительно духовной брани, которую мы ведем в современном мире. Ибо кто в нашем поколении может лучше сих священных Апостолов разуметь, что значит жизнь по вере как жизнь подлинного подвига? Они претерпели даже до славного мученичества ради распространения Евангелия и утверждения закона Божия в сердцах человеческих. Он хочет именоваться христианином, не стремясь в действительности соединиться с Самим Христом — Самопожертвовавшим Себя, Самопринесшим Себя в жертву и Несущим Крест. Но это не истинный путь христианина. И святые Апостолы непрестанно напоминают нам об этом. Сквозь века они обращаются к каждому из вас, к каждому из нас: возьми крест твой! Да ответим мы на него всею нашею жизнью, и да последуем верно за святыми Апостолами в Рай. Аминь.

L’homélie suivante a été prononcée par Son Excellence l’Évêque Irénée de Londres et d’Europe occidentale à Luxembourg, en la fête des Saints Apôtres Pierre et Paul, le 29 juin / 12 juillet 2026.
Au nom du Père, et du Fils, et du Saint-Esprit :
Mes bien-aimés dans le Christ : Une fois encore, malgré toutes nos iniquités et nos insuffisances, le Seigneur miséricordieux et Ami des hommes a daigné nous rassembler, afin que, par Sa grâce, nous rendions un digne hommage aux colonnes de l’Orthodoxie, aux pierres de fondation de l’Église et aux modèles universellement glorifiés du zèle missionnaire : les saints Apôtres Pierre et Paul.
Vous qui demeurez dans cette cité gardée de Dieu et qui adorez dans ce sublime sanctuaire, vous partagez avec les frères de notre nouvelle paroisse de Rome l’honneur de célébrer cette grande fête, non seulement avec tous les chrétiens comme l’un des plus hauts sommets de l’année liturgique, mais encore comme votre fête patronale, votre « deuxième Pâque » et le centre spirituel de votre vie paroissiale. Que les grands chefs du chœur apostolique, les saints Pierre et Paul, veillent toujours sur vous avec le zèle de pères aimants, vous guidant dans la vraie Foi avec droiture, compassion et un désir incessant de croître toujours davantage vers le Christ notre Dieu. Et que leur céleste protection conserve cette paroisse agréable à Dieu jusqu’à la consommation des siècles !
En l’honneur de ces Apôtres, permettez-moi d’employer cette humble parole pour accomplir ce qu’eux-mêmes, en tant qu’éminents archipasteurs, auraient toujours souhaité voir accompli en leur nom : vous adresser une exhortation concernant les combats spirituels auxquels nous sommes confrontés dans le monde contemporain. Car qui, parmi notre génération, pourrait mieux que ces saints Apôtres comprendre ce que signifie une vie de foi qui soit une véritable vie de lutte ? Eux qui ont souffert jusqu’au glorieux martyre pour la propagation de l’Évangile et l’établissement de la loi de Dieu dans le cœur des hommes. Ils sont des flambeaux pour notre génération précisément parce qu’ils nous parlent depuis une époque où le seul nom de « chrétien » suscitait le mépris, la crainte, la colère, la persécution et l’hostilité ; une époque où la vraie Foi était en lutte contre les faux dogmes et le paganisme rebelle ; une époque où porter le nom du Christ et chercher à accomplir Ses commandements avait un coût réel et véritable. Oui, tel était le monde du premier siècle où ils vécurent ; mais, mes bien-aimés, notre monde n’est-il pas semblable ? Ne rencontrons-nous pas, d’une manière étonnante, tant des mêmes combats qu’eux ? Leurs tentations ne sont-elles pas devenues les nôtres, bien que près de deux millénaires se soient écoulés depuis qu’ils foulèrent cette terre et parcoururent les mers afin d’apporter la vie de l’Église à de nouveaux peuples et à de nouvelles contrées ?
Permettez-moi donc de vous demander en leur nom : qu’y a-t-il donc de différent aujourd’hui ? Rendons grâce à notre Seigneur Sauveur : nous voyons, en ces derniers temps, de nombreux signes de grâce et de consolation, notamment la croissance de l’Église et le renouveau d’une jeunesse qui se tourne vers une vie de foi. Pourtant, nous demeurons encore submergés par les hypocrisies de la modernité. Nous pouvons et devons nous réjouir de voir les tendances à la sécularisation commencer à s’infléchir, et l’homme contemporain découvrir peu à peu la fausseté de ses promesses pour rechercher une vérité plus durable. Mais lorsque nous contemplons la vie de ces Apôtres, nous ne pouvons encore comparer nos joies aux leurs, car leurs œuvres sont véritablement sans mesure. Par la vie de deux hommes, des nations, des pays et des peuples entiers se sont élevés du paganisme vers le grand Mystère de la Vie dans le Christ. Des paroles d’enseignement furent données que nous lisons et conservons encore aujourd’hui. Des empires furent transformés. Des siècles, et même des millénaires de normes culturelles furent renversés.
Qu’y a-t-il donc de différent aujourd’hui ? Certes, les réponses pourraient être nombreuses. Mais, en cette fête, je souhaite n’en retenir qu’une seule : l’affaiblissement du véritable esprit de sacrifice dans notre recherche de la vie chrétienne. Trop souvent, l’homme de notre génération désire atteindre la vie des saints sans leurs combats ; il désire les joies de la Résurrection sans les douleurs de la Croix. Il veut être appelé chrétien sans chercher réellement à s’unir au Christ Lui-même, qui S’est sacrifié, S’est offert Lui-même et a porté la Croix. Mais tel n’est pas le véritable chemin du chrétien. Et les saints Apôtres nous le rappellent sans cesse. À travers les siècles, ils s’adressent à chacun de vous, à chacun de nous : prends ta croix ! Recherche le combat, ne cherche pas à le fuir ! Prépare-toi à la lutte spirituelle, et non au confort affectif !
Les Apôtres ont vécu, prêché et reçu le martyre avec puissance parce qu’ils ont tout donné à Dieu. Absolument tout. Ils n’ont rien gardé pour eux-mêmes. Ils acceptaient avec reconnaissance la bonté et les soins lorsqu’ils leur étaient offerts ; mais ils n’attendaient rien et se tenaient prêts à tout. Ils étaient prêts à travailler, à peiner, à voyager, à subir l’exil et même la prison, à parler aussi bien qu’à garder le silence — tout cela pour suivre leur Sauveur. Ils avaient compris que la grâce est un don accordé gratuitement, mais que le dépassement des passions dans le cœur exige un prix qu’il faut consentir à payer : le prix d’une volonté prête à offrir sa propre vie, ses forces et tout son être afin de recevoir quelque chose de nouveau, quelque chose de meilleur.
Mes bien-aimés, que les Apôtres nous parlent en cette grande fête, et entendons leur voix qui, comme le proclame le prokimenon, « s’est répandue par toute la terre ». Leur voix nous appelle à nous lever et à vivre plus pleinement pour notre Dieu. Elle nous appelle non seulement à être prêts, mais encore à désirer ardemment lutter pour Lui. Elle nous appelle à sacrifier nos cœurs et notre vie afin de recevoir la véritable Vie. Répondrons-nous à cet appel ? Puisse-t-il en être ainsi. Puissions-nous répondre par toute notre vie, et suivre fidèlement les saints Apôtres jusque dans le Paradis. Amen.
