English:

The following homily was preached by His Grace Bishop Irenei of London and Western Europe in the London Cathedral of the Nativity of the Mother of God and the Holy Royal Martyrs, on the Feast of the Dormition of the Theotokos, 15 / 28 August 2026.

In the Name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit:

Today, the Mother of Life is laid in a tomb — she who had lain her own Son, the Bestower of Life and Life Himself, in a tomb hewn from stone; she who had discovered that tomb empty and beheld her dead Son, alive; she who now follows the path of all flesh and enters into the bosom of her forefathers. The Theotokos is buried with reverence, for those dear to her knew what a treasure it was they were charged to lay in the earth: a woman who had untied the knot of sin first tied by Eve; who had conversed with the Archangel unto life, where her first ancestor had entertained the devil unto death; who had been filled with grace to cause babes to leap in wombs; who had born and mothered and stood beside the Eternal Son of the Father, yet flesh of her flesh, and presented Him unto the world as the Saviour of all mankind. This is the treasure ‘in an earthen vessel’ (cf. 2 Corinthians 4.7), borne in a funeral procession to the tomb destined to embrace God’s Mother. This was the gift that the people of those blessed days felt and knew had been given to them, to the whole world, and was now taken from them unto rest.

Yet the Lord’s love for His Mother held new mysteries in store for the pious who flocked to her funeral procession — the Apostles, borne thereto on clouds from all corners of the earth; disciples, friends, and those to whom the Theotokos had ministered. For what the Theotokos and the other myrrh-bearing women had beheld, years before, at the tomb in Jerusalem — the Saviour’s victory over death and the triumph of un-defeatable Life — had not been solely a sign or testimony. His resurrection from the dead was the forging of a new path for the human race; the opening of a new door into His Kingdom. And today, the day of Our Lady’s blessed dormition, we behold this path being followed, the threshold of this door being crossed. For the Saviour would not abide His Mother to lie enclosed forever in the tomb, any more than He desires that any of His creatures should remain in death. He therefore raised up his blessed Mother, bodily, from her grave, and drew her into the heavenly mansions of His Father (cf. John 14.2), such that the tomb would be found empty by those who would bear testimony of this divine event to the whole of history.

Truly, as the hymnographer cries, ‘in falling asleep the Theotokos did not forsake the world, but passed into life as the Mother of Life’ (cf. tropar of the Feast)! And so it is true, also, that ‘neither the tomb nor death had power over her — for she was translated into Life by Him Who dwelt within her ever-virginal womb’ (cf. kondak of the Feast). And this mystery was revealed unto the world, through the testimony of the Apostle Thomas and those with him, in order that the truth of the Resurrection might be known to us all. It is not Christ alone Who rises from the dead: it is the whole of human creation. Though the bodies of those in repose lie in the graves awaiting the day of His coming, there shall truly come indeed a day when they shall be lifted up, raised anew in glory, to meet the Lord in the glorified earth (cf. 1 Thessalonians 4.16–17). Each man, each woman, shall arise anew, divine life coursing through their veins, and shall stand before God, face to face. And we know this to be true, we boldly and fearlessly bear testimony of its truth, because we have seen it already! We, together with the Apostles and disciples, this very day behold the Theotokos — child of Adam, daughter of Eve, one of us — bodily risen from the tomb. We behold the life of our sister, our mother, our friend and teacher, drawn out of the grave and translated into unending life.

Today the whole Orthodox world rejoices, for today the Pascha of the Lord is revealed as the Pascha, too, of His creatures. The handiwork joins the Creator, life borne into Life. The Mother of God has died, has been buried, yet sits enthroned with her Divine Son, bodily translated from earth to heaven. And from this comes the triumphal proclamation of the present Feast: Life triumphs over death, for the Lord and for His beloved! And you, each of you: when you feel weak, tired, defeated — call upon the memory of this sacred Feast. Behold a woman in the frail disintegration of death itself, restored to life. When you feel overcome by worldly concerns, when the demon of despair whispers in your ear: remind yourself of the girl who spoke to an angel, who beheld sorrow and dishonour, who entered into death — yet who was lifted up unto life. When you feel that your nature plagues you, your flesh stifles you, your very bones and blood work against you: remember Our Lady, flesh and bone and of the same nature as yours, lifted bodily from the dark tomb, in her flesh to stand again with her Son.

And so too shall you, and each of us, in the day of His second coming. Let us therefore dedicate ourselves now to preparing for that day, that we might meet it with joy and not with fear. May we live worthily of the Life to come, and may the most pure and ever-virgin Mother of our God, maternally guide each of us along the path of repentant joy that may bring us to eternity in His embrace.

Most holy Theotokos, save us! Amen.

Amen.
