Dear in Christ, Fathers, Brothers and Sisters!
Christ is risen! Truly, He is risen!
With profound gratitude before Almighty God, we have reached the day for which every Christian heart longs: the day of glory and brightness, of the only true and abiding joy that never fades. We have reached the Day of Resurrection, the Pascha of our Lord, the first day of the new creation He works in our lives and in His world.
How fitting that we arrive at the brightness of this day through the path of the night. Such has been the ordering of our cosmos since God first fashioned it, as the Divine Scriptures say, there was evening and there was morning: the first day (Genesis 1.5). It is first though the nighttime that we must walk, in order to see the brightness of the rising sun, just as before God created the light, darkness was upon the face of the deep (Genesis 1.2). This physical reality from the beginnings of creation is a revelation of a spiritual truth in which we live always. It is through the darkness that light is born: through suffering, we come to joy. We do not venerate Christ’s empty tomb without first bowing before His precious and life-giving Cross, for He Whom we adore did not see fit to rise from that tomb without first accepting the Cross, offering Himself upon it, that we might behold how Love transforms death into life.
And so we arrive at this bright day, through the night that has brought us here — times of struggle, moments of spiritual temptation, the experience of the weakness of the flesh and of the spirit — all of which we offer to Him Who turns sorrow into joy and night into day. And how fitting, that we meet His Resurrection in the depth of night! It is in the darkness of the unlit temple that we light the three-branched candlestick of Pascha; it is in the darkness of night that we take lamps and candles in our hands and go to find the empty tomb. As our great forebear in the Faith, St John the Wonderworker of Shanghai and San Francisco, for many years the Ruling Bishop of this God-preserved Diocese, once said to his flock in Shanghai during the dark period of persecution leading up to their expulsion from that place less than a year later, ‘The present night is no ordinary night! Brighter than the day, it illumines our souls! The rays of the Sun of the world illumine us and the whole universe, enlightening all who come unto His light. The warmth poured out in His rays penetrates all our members, filling our souls with deep peace and even healing our bodily infirmities. Our sorrows are melted away by their warmth, and our passions are burned away as if by fire. … The whole world becomes different in this holy and unequalled night!’ (St John the Wonderworker, Paschal Homily, 1940).
Thus do we stand, beloved brethren and sisters, at the threshold of a new creation. God in His mercy has seen fit to grant us once again the experience of His Resurrection, that, beholding night transformed into day and sin utterly defeated, we might joyfully take courage from our Lord’s defeat of hades, gaining the resolve to combat with new vigour the darkness that remains in us. Christ is risen! Let us therefore fight against our passions with the strength of His victory, overcoming the poisons of fear, or despair, or doubt, or anger. Christ is risen! Rejoice each time you utter these words, for they are the victory-cry of truth over lies, light over darkness, and life over death. And be resolved solemnly to walk behind our Saviour, following His guidance and will, fearing nothing, for we are the children of the resurrected and living God.
May the joy of this Paschal night, and of our New Day, strengthen each of you in the love of our Risen Saviour.

Дорогіе во Христѣ отцы, братья и сестры!
Христосъ воскресе! Воистину Воскресе!
Съ глубокой благодарностью передъ Всемогущимъ Богомъ мы достигли дня, котораго жаждетъ каждое христіанское сердцѣ: дня славы и сіянія, единственной истинной и непреходящей радости, которая никогда не угасаетъ. Мы достигли Дня Воскресенія, Пасхи нашего Господа, перваго дня новаго творенія, которое Онъ совершаетъ въ нашей жизни и во всѣмъ мірѣ.
Какъ промыслительно то, что мы достигаемъ сіянія этого дня посредствомъ ночного пути. Таковъ былъ порядокъ нашего мірозданія съ тѣхъ поръ, какъ Богъ впервые его создалъ, какъ сказано въ Священномъ Писаніи, и былъ вечеръ, и было утро: день первый (Бытіе 1,5). Прежде всего, въ ночное время мы должны идти, чтобы увидѣть яркость восходящаго солнца, точно такъ же, какъ до того, какъ Богъ сотворилъ свѣтъ, пребывала тьма надъ бездною (Бытіе 1,2). Эта физическая реальность съ самаго начала творенія является откровеніемъ духовной истины, въ которой мы всегда пребываемъ. Именно черезъ тьму рождается свѣтъ: черезъ страданіе мы приходимъ къ радости. Мы не ликуемъ передъ пустой гробницей Христа, не преклонившись сначала передъ Его Честнымъ и Животворящимъ Крестомъ, ибо Тотъ, Кому мы поклоняемся, не счелъ нужнымъ подняться изъ этой гробницы, не принявъ сначала Крестъ и не предложивъ Себя на немъ, чтобы мы могли увидѣть, какъ Любовь превращаетъ смерть въ жизнь.
Итакъ, мы подходимъ къ этому свѣтлому дню, черезъ ночь, которая привела насъ сюда – съ временами борьбы, съ моментами духовныхъ искушеній, переживаніями слабости плоти и духа – все это мы предлагаемъ Тому, Кто обращаетъ печаль въ радость, и нощь въ день. И какъ промыслительно, что мы встрѣчаемъ Его Воскресеніе глубокой ночью! Во тьмѣ неосвѣщеннаго храма мы зажигаемъ пасхальный трисвѣчникъ; именно въ темнотѣ ночи мы беремъ въ руки фонари и свѣчи и идемъ искать пустую гробницу. Нашъ великій предшественникъ въ вѣрѣ, святитель Іоаннъ Шанхайскій и Санъ-Францисскій, Чудотворецъ, долгіе годы являвшійся Правящимъ Архіереемъ нашей богохранимой епархіи, однажды сказалъ своей паствѣ въ Шанхаѣ во время мрачнаго періода преслѣдованій, приведшихъ вскорѣ къ ее изгнанію изъ этого мѣста: «Необычайна нынѣшняя ночь! Свѣтлѣе дня она осіяетъ наши души! Лучи Солнца міра освѣщаютъ насъ и всю вселенную, просвѣщая всѣхъ притекающихъ къ Его Свѣту. Теплота, разливаемая Его лучами, проникаетъ во всѣ наши составы, наполняя глубокимъ миромъ наши души и даже утишая болѣзни тѣлесныя. Отъ теплоты ихъ растаеваютъ наши скорби и словно огнемъ попаляются страсти. … Инымъ становится весь міръ въ сію ночь святую и единственную!» (святитель Іоаннъ Шанхайскій, Пасхальное посланіе, 1940 г.).
Итакъ, возлюбленные братья и сестры, мы стоимъ на порогѣ новаго творенія. Богъ по Своей милости счелъ нужнымъ снова даровать намъ переживаніе Своего Свѣтлаго Воскресенія, чтобы, созерцая ночь, превращенную въ день, и полностью побѣжденный грѣхъ, мы могли съ радостью черпать мужество въ пораженіи нашимъ Господомъ преисподней, обрѣтая рѣшимость съ новой силой сражаться съ тьмой, которая остается въ насъ. Христосъ воскресе! Будемъ же бороться со своими страстями силой Его побѣды, преодолѣвая ядъ страха, отчаянія, сомнѣнія или гнѣва. Христосъ воскресе! Возрадуемся каждый разъ, когда мы произносимъ эти слова, ибо они – побѣдоносный крикъ истины въ сраженіи надъ ложью, свѣта надъ тьмой и жизни надъ смертью. Примемъ торжественное рѣшеніе идти за нашимъ Спасителемъ, слѣдуя Его руководству и волѣ, ничего не боясь, потому что мы – чада воскресшаго и живаго Господа!
Пусть же радость этой пасхальной ночи и сего Новаго Дня, его же сотвори Господь, укрѣпитъ каждаго изъ васъ въ любви къ нашему Воскресшему Спасителю.

Chers Pères, Frères et Sœurs :
Le Christ est ressuscité !
Avec une profonde gratitude envers le Dieu Tout-Puissant, nous avons atteint le jour auquel chaque cœur chrétien aspire : le jour de gloire et d’éclat, de la seule joie vraie et permanente qui ne se fane jamais. Nous avons atteint le Jour de la Résurrection, la Pâque de notre Seigneur, le premier jour de la nouvelle création qu’Il façonne dans nos vies et dans Son monde.
Comme il est approprié que nous arrivions à la luminosité de ce jour par le chemin de la nuit. Tel a été l’ordre de notre cosmos depuis que Dieu l’a façonné pour la première fois, comme le disent les Écritures divines, Il y eut un soir et il y eut un matin ; ce fut le premier jour (Genèse 1, 5). C’est d’abord dans la nuit que nous devons marcher, pour voir l’éclat du soleil levant, tout comme avant que Dieu ne crée la lumière, Il y avait des ténèbres à la surface de l’abîme (Genèse 1, 2). Cette réalité physique des débuts de la création est la révélation d’une vérité spirituelle dans laquelle nous vivons toujours. C’est à travers les ténèbres que la lumière naît : à travers la souffrance, nous arrivons à la joie. Nous ne vénérons pas le tombeau vide du Christ sans nous incliner d’abord devant Sa précieuse et vivifiante Croix, car Celui que nous adorons n’a pas jugé bon de Se lever de ce tombeau sans d’abord accepter la Croix, S’offrant sur elle, afin que nous puissions voir comment l’Amour transforme la mort en vie.
Et ainsi nous arrivons à ce jour lumineux, à travers la nuit qui nous a amenés ici — des temps de lutte, des moments de tentation spirituelle, l’expérience de la faiblesse de la chair et de l’esprit — tout ce que nous offrons à Celui qui transforme la douleur en joie et la nuit en jour. Et comme il est approprié que nous rencontrions Sa Résurrection au plus profond de la nuit ! C’est dans l’obscurité de l’église éteinte que nous allumons le chandelier pascal à trois branches; c’est dans l’obscurité de la nuit que nous prenons des lampes et des bougies dans nos mains et que nous allons trouver le tombeau vide. Comme notre grand ancêtre dans la foi, saint Jean le Thaumaturge de Shanghai et de San Francisco, (pendant de nombreuses années l’évêque dirigeant de ce diocèse préservé par Dieu), l’a dit une fois à son troupeau à Shanghai pendant la sombre période de persécution qui a conduit à son expulsion de cet endroit plus tard, « Cette nuit n’est pas une nuit ordinaire ! Plus brillante que le jour, elle illumine nos âmes ! Les rayons du Soleil du monde nous éclairent, nous et l’univers tout entier, éclairant tous ceux qui viennent à Sa lumière. La chaleur déversée par Ses rayons pénètre tous nos membres, remplissant nos âmes d’une paix profonde et guérissant même nos infirmités corporelles. Nos chagrins fondent sous leur chaleur, et nos passions sont brûlées comme par le feu. … Le monde entier devient différent dans cette nuit sainte et sans égale ! » (St Jean le Thaumaturge, Homélie pascale, 1940).
C’est ainsi que nous nous tenons, frères et sœurs bien-aimés, au seuil d’une nouvelle création. Le Christ-Dieu dans Sa miséricorde a jugé bon de nous accorder une fois de plus l’expérience de Sa résurrection, afin que, voyant la nuit transformée en jour et le péché totalement vaincu, nous puissions joyeusement prendre courage de la victoire de notre Seigneur contre l’enfer, acquérant la résolution de combattre avec une nouvelle vigueur l’obscurité qui reste en nous. Le Christ est ressuscité ! Luttons donc contre nos passions avec la force de Sa victoire, surmontant les poisons de la peur, du désespoir, du doute ou de la colère. Le Christ est ressuscité ! Réjouissez-vous chaque fois que vous prononcez ces paroles, car elles sont le cri de victoire de la vérité sur les mensonges, la lumière sur les ténèbres et la vie sur la mort. Et soyez résolus à marcher solennellement derrière notre Sauveur, en suivant Sa direction et Sa volonté, sans rien craindre, car nous sommes les enfants du Dieu ressuscité et vivant.
Que la joie de cette nuit pascale et de notre « nouveau jour » fortifie chacun de vous dans l’amour de notre Sauveur ressuscité !
