English Introduction:

As we approach the 30th anniversary (on 29th September / 12th October 2023) of the uncovering of the relics of St John the Wonderworker of Shanghai and San Francisco — who, as Archbishop of Brussels and Western Europe served from 1950-1963 as the Ruling Bishop of our Diocese — we provide here one in a series of accounts that we will publish over the coming days of the uncovering of his precious relics.

The uncovering of St John’s relics occurred in two parts: the initial investigation of his tomb, which disclosed the existence of incorrupt relics but did not fully remove them from their burial place; and the second, during which the relics were fully opened, removed from their tomb, prepared, and placed in a new casket in preparation for the glorification of the saint.

The account provided here relates to the first of those acts — the initial investigation of the tomb, authorised by the Holy Synod and Archbishop Anthony of San Francisco in 1993, and which ultimately led to the decision to return a short time later to the tomb for the full uncovering. The account is by a witness and active participant in that event: Reader Vladimir Krassovsky. Vladimir has gone one to become a renowned iconographer and the chief conductor of the Hierarchical Choir of Holy Virgin Cathedral in San Francisco, where St John’s relics are enshrined. Обретение мощей святителя Иоанна произошло в два этапа: первоначальное исследование его гробницы, которое выявило существование нетленных мощей, но не извлекло их полностью из места захоронения; и второй, во время которого мощи были полностью раскрыты, извлечены из гроба, приготовлены и помещены в новый гроб для приготовления к прославлению святителя.

In the Name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit.

By God’s Grace and with the blessing of His Grace, Archbishop Anthony, the ruling bishop of the Western American Diocese of the Russian Orthodox Church Abroad, on the night of September 17 / 30, the Feast of the Holy Martyrs Faith, Hope, Love, and Wisdom, the first step of preparation towards the uncovering of the holy relics of the ever-memorable hierarch John, Archbishop of Shanghai and San Francisco, took place. The relics of the Archbishop have rested untouched for twenty-seven years in the sepulchre underneath the Cathedral of the Most Holy Mother of God, Joy of Al Who Sorrow, in the God-saved city of San Francisco.
According to the orders of Vladyka Archbishop Anthony, we entered the holy sepulchre at nine o’clock in the evening. The ruling Archbishop Anthony, along with Priest George Kurtow, Protodeacon Nikolai Porshnikoff, reader Vladimir Krassovsky, and the caretaker of the sepulchre, Boris Michailovich Troyan, were present. At exactly nine o’clock Archbishop Anthony began serving a litiya for the departed while the clergy present sang. After the litiya, the “Prayer Before the Beginning of Every Good Work” was read. Then all present received the archpastoral blessing from Vladyka Anthony.

All of the sacred articles which were on the casket (the miter, lampada, dikiri, trikiri, two icons, ripidi, flowers, and brocade covering) were removed and placed to the side. The sarcophagus was prepared for opening. First it was decided to open the ventilation seal on the head of the sarcophagus. This was done by reader Vladimir Krassovsky while we all sang the troparion “Have mercy on us, O Lord, have mercy on us.” It was noticed that while this opening was made there was no odor of corruption whatsoever.

Then with great trepidation we proceeded to open the lid of the sarcophagus which weighs four hundred and ten pounds. The initial study of the construction of the sarcophagus was made by Protodeacon Nikolai and Reader Vladimir on September 4 / 17 when they went to the firm where these sarcophagi were manufactured.

The instruments (hammers, crowbars) were specially purchased by the Protodeacon. The wooden cross-bars were prepared by Father George.

In three places on one side the cross-bars were placed under the lid of the sarcophagus. On the first attempt to raise the lid, the entire sarcophagus rose up a few inches without the lid separating. This happened due to the rubber lining which was under the lid. It was decided to try a second time, after which the lid separated from the sarcophagus. Immediately two wooden boards were placed between the lid and the sarcophagus. Through the crack the mantle (mantia) which covered the casket itself was seen inside the cement sarcophagus. We then proceeded to the other side, and without difficulty we lifted that side of the lid.

It was decided to remove the whole lid in order to examine the casket itself. The rubber lining was removed. When the lid had been taken off all those present saw that the mantle which covered the casket was in the same condition as it was twenty-seven years ago; that is, as if completely new without any sign of decomposition or damage.

Upon examining the casket itself it was noticed that the casket was rusted through in a few places. The metal had rusted especially along the entire opening between the lid and the lower part of the casket. Above the left side of the casket it had rusted right through. There was a hole about one inch wide and three inches long.

No indication whatsoever of corruption was noticed coming from this opening. The left side near the left shoulder of the casket was also severely rusted. At this area on the inside of the sarcophagus there were yellow spots.

The casket itself was a goldish color. At the time of the burial the casket was a bluish-grey. One might explain the change of color due to the fact that in the course of time the lacquer which covered the metal casket had yellowed. There were also noticed dark brown spots here and there.

Further investigation revealed that there was no opening at the feet for the key to be inserted into the lid. The key from the casket had been kept by Hieromonk Peter (Loukianoff) at Holy Trinity Monastery in New York State. In order to find this opening it was suggested to lift the casket out of the sarcophagus, but after discussion ti was decided against, since the condition of the bottom of the casket was not known. We were not prepared what to do if it were to be ascertained that the casket was rusted through the bottom.

His Grace, Vladyka Anthony, requested that Fr. George prepare a temporary wooden casket. Protodeacon Nikolai and reader Vladimir were asked to look after other details in case it would be necessary at the opening of the holy relics to place them in a temporary wooden casket due to the poor condition of the present casket. All of this was to be done until a proper reliquary could be made.

After these orders were given by the ruling Archbishop, the steel enforced concrete lid was placed back on again, and all the sacred items which had been removed were returned to their former place.

After another litiya for the dead, a blessing was received again from the Archbishop, and with great joy and spiritual uplift we returned to our homes praising God for the great mercy sent to us. Amen.

Во имя Отца и Сына и Святаго Духа.

Изволением Божиим и с благословения Высокопреосвященнейшего Антония, правящего архиепископа Западно – Американской епархии Русской Православной Церкви Заграницей, ночью 17/30 сентября, в день святых мучениц Веры, Надежды и Любови и матери их Софии, началась первая стадия работы по подготовлению к открытию святых мощей приснопамятного святителя Иоанна, архиепископа Шанхайского и Сан-Францисского, которые уже 27 лет почивают нетронутыми под спудом кафедрального собора Пресвятой Богородицы «Всех скорбящих Радости», что в богоспасаемом граде Сан-Франциско. По назначению Владыки архиепископа Антония к 9 часам вечера пришли во святую усыпальницу сам правящий архиепископ Антоний, иерей Георгий Куртов, протодиакон Николай Поршников, чтец Владимир Красовский и смотритель усыпальницы Борис Михайлович Троян. Ровно в 9. 00 вечера началась заупокойная лития, которую отслужил сам Владыка архиепископ Антоний при пении присутствующего клира. После литии была вознесена молитва перед началом доброго дела. Затем все присутствующие приняли архипастырское благословение от владыки Антония.

Все священные предметы, находящиеся на гробе (митра, лампада, дикирий, трикирий, две иконы, рипиды, цветы, парчовое покрывало) были сняты и отложены в сторону. Склеп, сделанный из бетона, был готов к открытию. Было решено сперва открыть небольшое отверстие во главе гробницы, что и было сделано чтецом Владимиром Красовским при общем пении тропарей «Помилуй нас, Господи, помилуй нас». В течение происходившего никакого запаха тления не чувствовалось.

Затем с великим трепетом приступили к открытию крышки гробницы весом 410 фунтов. Предварительное исследование строения самой гробницы было произведено протодиаконом Николаем и чтецом Владимиром 4/17 сентября, когда они ездили в фирму, где делаются эти гробницы.

Инструменты (ломы, молотки) были специально куплены о. протодиаконом. Деревянные подпорки были заготовлены о. Георгием.

В трёх местах с одной стороны были подставлены подпорки и были вставлены под крышку гробницы ломы. При первой попытке поднять крышку поднялась на несколько дюймов вся гробница, и крышка не отделялась от основной части гроба – из-за резиновой прокладки, которая прилипла к крышке. Решено было попробовать второй раз, после которого удалось отделить крышку. Сразу были подложены 2 деревянные дощечки. Через щель была видна мантия, которая покрывала самый гроб внутри бетонной гробницы. Затем перешли на другую сторону и беспрепятственно подняли другую сторону крышки.

Было решено снять всю крышку, для того чтобы осмотреть самый гроб и снять резиновую прокладку. По снятии крышки присутствующие увидели, что мантия, которая покрывала гроб, была точно в таком состоянии, какое было 27 лет тому назад, то есть совершенно новой, абсолютно тлением не повреждённой.

При осмотре самого гроба было обнаружено, что гроб проржавел в некоторых местах. Особенно железо проржавело вокруг всего отверстия гроба между крышкой и нижней частью гроба. Над левым плечом гроб проржавел насквозь. (Размер приблизительно 1 дюйм ширины и 3 дюйма длины.)

Никакого запаха тления не исходило из этого отверстия. Левая сторона около левого плеча тоже сильно проржавела. На самой бетонной гробнице снаружи в этом месте были тёмные пятна.

Самый гроб был золотистого цвета… Известно, что гроб при погребении был голубовато-серого цвета. Можно объяснить перемену цвета тем, что лак, которым покрывают металл гроба, пожелтел от времени. Были даже тёмно-коричневые пятна.

При дальнейшем исследовании не могли найти отверстия в ногах для ключа от крышки гроба. Самый ключ от гроба находится в Свято – Троицком монастыре в Нью-Йорке у иеромонаха Петра (Лукьянова). Для того чтобы найти это отверстие, было предложено поднять гроб из бетонной гробницы, но после обсуждения решили не делать этого пока, так как не было известно, в каком состоянии дно гроба – мы не были готовы что-либо сделать, если бы оказалось, что гроб проржавел снизу.

Высокопреосвященнейший владыка Антоний тогда поручил о. Георгию приготовить временный деревянный гроб, а о. протодиакону Николаю и чтецу Владимиру – позаботиться о других деталях в случае, если при открытии святых мощей нужно будет из-за плохого состояния гроба переложить во временный деревянный гроб святые мощи до изготовления настоящей раки.

После этих распоряжений правящего архиепископа железобетонная крышка была возложена на своё место и все священные предметы, которые были сняты, положены на свои прежние места.

После заупокойной литии и принятии архипастырского благословения все с великой радостью, в молитвенном подъёме разошлись по домам, славяще Бога за великую ниспосланную милость. Аминь.
