WEDNESDAY 4 / 17 JULY 2024: On the Feast of the Holy Royal Martyrs, the lower Altar Feast of the Diocesan Cathedral in London, the solemnity of the festal Divine Services was augmented by the grace of a priestly ordination.

Heading the Divine Services was the Ruling Bishop of the Diocese, His Grace Bishop Irenei of London and Western Europe, who was joined by a great number of clergy who assembled together for the Feast: the regular clerics of the Cathedral, Archpriests Peter Baulk, Vitaly Serapinas, Yaroslav Hudymenko, Hieromonk Theodore, and Deacons Andrei Borisas and Sergei Baranov were joined by fellow Diocesan clergymen from other parts of the United Kingdom: Archpriest Paul Elliott (Diocesan Chancellor), Archpriest Luke Holden (of the Llanelli Parish), Hieromonk Mark (of the Cardiff Parish), Priest Mark Tattum-Smith (of the Mettingham Parish), Priest Aleksandr Groves (of the St Leonard’s Parish); and Hierodeacon Avraamy and Deacon Mark Fisher (both of the Cardiff Parish). Joining these were respected clergymen from other Orthodox dioceses represented in the UK: Archpriests Maxim Nikolsky and Stephen Platt (both of the Diocese of Sourozh), Archpriest Goran Spaic (of the Serbian Orthodox Church), and Priests Michael Touma and Boniface Carrol (of the Antiochian Orthodox Church).

The solemn All-Night Vigil was served on Tuesday evening in the lower temple, dedicated to the Royal Martyrs, during which a procession was made at the litya to the memorial Cross on the Cathedral grounds, erected in 2018 on the centenary of the sacrificial martyrdom of the great saints of God. On Wednesday morning, the Feastday proper, the Ruling Bishop was greeted at the steps of the Cathedral with bread and salt by Vera Alexandrevna McClanahan, senior Trustee of the Parish who long served as its Starosta, upon which the assembled clergy made their entrance into the temple and vested for the sacred Liturgy.

At the Little Entrance, the Reverend Hieromonk Mark (Underwood), Rector of the Cardiff Parish, was awarded the right to wear the Gold Pectoral Cross, in light of his years of faithful service and missionary zeal for the life of the Church. Priest Mark Tattum-Smith was awarded the right to wear the nabedrennik.

At the end of the Great Entrance, the faithful Deacon of the Cardiff Parish, the Reverend Mark Fisher, was brought forth for ordination to the Holy Priesthood. Having been led thrice around the Holy Table by the Diocesan Chancellor, the apostolic tradition of the laying-on of hands was fulfilled for the pious deacon, who by the descent of the Most Holy Spirit was elevated to the rank of Priest. Father Mark was then clothed in the sacred garments of the Priesthood to cries of ‘Axios!’ by the clergy and faithful, and took his place amongst his fellow Priests for the remainder of the Liturgy.

At the invitation of the Bishop, the Very Reverend Archpriest Maxim Nikolsky delivered a homily before Holy Communion, focussing on the sacrifice of the Royal Martyrs and the example they set for the pious life in Christ to be emulated by all the faithful. ‘Though there are many examples of those who do not follow God, we have in St Nicholas and his Royal Family an example of those who did and who do’, said the preacher. ‘May the Lord have mercy on us, and help us to follow their example!’

At the conclusion of the Liturgy, a Cross Procession was held round the Cathedral, the Holy Gospel proclaimed on its steps to the glory of God and for the sanctification of all the people. A moleben was then served before the icon of the Royal Martyrs, at the end of which ‘Many years’ was proclaimed for the Hierarchy, Clergy and Faithful of the parish, and ‘Memory eternal’ sung for the founders and past clergy of the Cathedral.

According to tradition, the Gramata of Ordination was then read aloud in the hearing of all the assembled clergy and faithful, and presented to the newly-ordained Priest Mark, after which Vladyka Irenei warmly greeted all with the joy of the patronal feast day. A festal banquet, jointly prepared by the Sisterhoods of the London and Cardiff Parishes, was then held in the Cathedral Hall, during which congratulations and words of celebration were exchanged.

Богослужение возглавил Правящий архиерей Преосвященный епископ Лондонский и Западно-Европейский Ириней которому сослужило большое количество священнослужителей: штатные клирики собора протоиереи Петр Баулк, Виталий Серапинас, Ярослав Гудименко, иеромонах Феодор, диаконы Андрей Борисас и Сергий Баранов. К ним присоединились иные епархиальные священнослужители из других частей Соединенного Королевства: протоиерей Павел Эллиотт (епархиальный секретарь), протоиерей Лука Холден (приход Лланелли), иеромонах Марк (из кардиффского прихода), иерей Марк Таттум-Смит (из меттингемского прихода), иерей Александр Гровс (приход Сен-Леонарда); иеродиакон Авраамий и диакон Марк Фишер (оба из Кардиффского прихода). К ним присоединились почтенные пастыри из других православных юрисдикций, представленных в Великобритании: протоиереи Максим Никольский и Стефан Платт (из Сурожской епархии), протоиерей Горан Спайч (из Сербской Православной Церкви), а также священники Михаил Тума и Вонифатий Кэррол (Антиохийский Патриархат).

Во вторник вечером в нижнем храме, посвященном Царственным мученикам, было совершено торжественное Всенощное бдение, в ходе которого на литии был совершен крестный ход к памятному Кресту на территории собора, воздвигнутому в 2018 году к столетию жертвенного мученичества великих угодников Божьих. В среду утром, в самый праздник, Правящего Архиерея встретила на ступенях собора хлебом-солью госпожа Вера Александровна Мак Кланахан, старшая попечительница прихода, долгое время служившая его старостой, после чего собравшееся духовенство вошло в храм для облачения перед Божественной литургией.

На Малом входе Его Преподобие иеромонах Марк (Андервуд), настоятель Кардиффского прихода, был удостоен права ношения Золотого наперсного креста за многолетнее верное служение и миссионерскую деятельность во благо Церкви. Правом ношения набедренника был удостоен священник Марк Таттум-Смит.

По окончании Великого входа для рукоположения во священство был выведен диакон Кардиффского прихода Марк Фишер. Трижды обведенный епархиальным секретарем вокруг престола, благочестивый диакон был возведен в сан священника, сошествием благодати Пресвятого Духа и возложением рук для исполнения апостольской преемственности. Затем под возгласы духовенства и верующих «Аксиос!» отец Марк был облачен в священные одежды и занял свое место среди собратьев-священников до конца Литургии.

По благословению Архиерея протоиерей Максим Никольский произнес перед Святым Причастием проповедь, в которой остановился на теме жертвы Царственных мучеников и на примере, который они подают для благочестивой жизни во Христе. «Хотя существует много примеров тех, кто не следует за Богом, мы имеем в лице Святого Императора Николая и его царской семьи пример, которому подобает наследовать», — сказал проповедник. «Да помилует нас Господь и поможет нам последовать их благочестивым житиям!»

По окончании Литургии вокруг собора был совершен Крестный ход, на ступенях возвещалось Святое Евангелие во славу Божию и для освящения всего народа. Затем перед иконой Царственных мучеников был отслужен молебен, по окончании которого провозглашено «Многолетие» Иерархии, духовенству и верующим прихода, а также исполнена «Вечная Память!» основателям и почившим служителям и мирянам кафедрального храма.

По традиции, затем перед всем собравшимся духовенством и верующими была прочитана Грамата о рукоположении и вручена новоиспеченному иерею Марку, после чего Владыка Ириней тепло приветствовал всех радостью престольного праздника. Затем в Соборном зале состоялась праздничная трапеза, совместно подготовленная сестричествами Лондонского и Кардиффского приходов, на которой духовенство и миряне обменивались поздравлениями и благопожеланиями.
