The Feast of the Royal Martyrs, to whom the lower Altar of the Diocesan Cathedral is dedicated, was prayerfully marked in London.

4 / 17 JULY 2026: The Feast of the lower Altar of the London Cathedral, dedicated to the Holy Royal Martyrs, was marked with solemnity by clergy and faithful from a wide region. The festal Divine Services, headed by the Rector of the London Cathedral, His Grace Bishop Irenei of London and Western Europe, together with its local clergy, Archpriests Vitaly Serapinas and Yaroslav Hudymenko, Hieromonk Theodore (Stanway) and Deacon Sergei Baranov, were adorned with the presence of other clergymen who had travelled to the capital for the precious Feast: Archpriest Paul Elliott of the Wallasey Parish, Chancellor of the Diocese; Archpriest Stephen Platt of the Oxford Parish of the Sourozh Diocese; Priest Dobromir Dimitrov of the Bulgarian Orthodox Church in London; Hieromonk Mark (Underwood) and Priest Mark Fisher of the Cardiff Parish; and Priest Boniface Carroll of the Antiochian Archdiocese.
On the Eve of the Feast, the All-night Vigil was kept in the Cathedral’s lower church, where the iconostasis is adorned with one of the most beloved icons of the Royal Martyrs. At the vesperal Litya, all the clergy and faithful processed out of the temple to the granite memorial Cross, erected on the Cathedral grounds in 2018 to honour the centenary of the Royal Family’s blessed martyrdom, and there prayed for their continued intercessions for the whole world. The Vigil continued in the lower church, after which a small meal was offered by the Sisterhood for the visiting clergy.
On Friday, the day of the Feast itself, Vladyka Irenei was greeted at the porch of the Cathedral by its Starosta with the traditional bread-and-salt, upon which the vesting of the Hierarch took place, followed by the reading of the Hours and the feast al Divine Liturgy. According to the custom that has emerged over recent years, the Liturgy was celebrated in the Cathedral’s upper church, which on this occasion was particularly helpful on account of the unusually high temperatures across Europe; then, at the conclusion of the Liturgy, the Cross procession around the Cathedral made its way back into the lower church, dedicated to the Royal Martyrs, and before their precious icon prayed a moleben and sang the magnification in their honour.
At the conclusion of the services, Bishop Irenei delivered a homily on the love felt towards the Royal Martyrs by the children of all parts of the Orthodox world, but especially of the Church Abroad, where their testimony continues to inspire her children to rise up to the full measure of Orthodox life in difficult times. Праздничныя богослуженія возглавилъ настоятель Лондонскаго кафедральнаго собора, Преосвященнѣйшій епископъ Лондонскій и Западно-Европейскій Ириней, въ сослуженіи мѣстнаго духовенства: протоіереевъ Виталія Серапинаса и Ярослава Гудыменко, іеромонаха Ѳеодора (Стэнуэя) и діакона Сергія Баранова. Богослуженія украсило присутствіе другихъ священнослужителей, прибывшихъ въ столицу ради сего драгоцѣннаго праздника: протоіерея Павла Элліотта изъ Уолласійскаго прихода, Канцлера епархіи; протоіерея Стефана Платта изъ Оксфордскаго прихода Сурожской епархіи; священника Добромира Димитрова изъ Болгарской Православной Церкви въ Лондонѣ; іеромонаха Марка (Андервуда) и священника Марка Фишера изъ Кардиффскаго прихода; и священника Бонифатія Кэрролла изъ Антіохійской Архіепископіи.
Наканунѣ праздника Всенощное бдѣніе совершалось въ нижнемъ храмѣ собора, иконостасъ котораго украшенъ однимъ изъ самыхъ любимыхъ образовъ Царственныхъ Мучениковъ. Во время вечерней литіи все духовенство и вѣрующіе вышли крестнымъ ходомъ изъ храма къ гранитному памятному Кресту, установленному на территоріи собора въ 2018 году въ ознаменованіе столѣтія блаженной мученической кончины Царской Семьи, и тамъ молились объ ихъ непрестанномъ предстательствѣ за весь міръ. Бдѣніе продолжилось въ нижнемъ храмѣ, послѣ чего сестричество собора предложило прибывшему духовенству небольшую трапезу.
Въ пятницу, въ самый день праздника, Владыка Ириней былъ встрѣченъ на паперти собора его старостой съ традиціонными хлѣбомъ-солью, послѣ чего состоялось облаченіе Архіерея, затѣмъ чтеніе часовъ и праздничная Божественная литургія. Согласно обычаю, сложившемуся въ послѣдніе годы, литургія совершалась въ верхнемъ храмѣ собора, что въ этотъ разъ оказалось особенно благопріятнымъ ввиду необычайно высокой температуры по всей Европѣ; по окончаніи же литургіи крестный ходъ вокругъ собора направился обратно въ нижній храмъ, посвященный Царственнымъ Мученикамъ, гдѣ предъ ихъ драгоцѣннымъ образомъ былъ совершенъ молебенъ и пропѣто величаніе въ ихъ честь.
По окончаніи богослуженій Епископъ Ириней произнесъ проповѣдь о любви, которую питаютъ къ Царственнымъ Мученикамъ чада всѣхъ частей Православнаго міра, но особенно Русской Зарубежной Церкви, гдѣ ихъ свидѣтельство продолжаетъ вдохновлять ея чадъ восходить въ трудныя времена къ полной мѣрѣ православной жизни. Les offices divins de la fête furent présidés par le recteur de la cathédrale de Londres, Son Excellence Monseigneur Irénée, Évêque de Londres et d’Europe occidentale, entouré du clergé local : les archiprêtres Vitaly Serapinas et Yaroslav Hudymenko, le hiéromoine Théodore (Stanway) et le diacre Serge Baranov. Les offices furent également rehaussés par la présence d’autres ecclésiastiques venus dans la capitale pour cette précieuse fête : l’archiprêtre Paul Elliott, de la paroisse de Wallasey et Chancelier du Diocèse ; l’archiprêtre Stephen Platt, de la paroisse d’Oxford du Diocèse de Sourozh ; le prêtre Dobromir Dimitrov, de l’Église orthodoxe bulgare à Londres ; le hiéromoine Marc (Underwood) et le prêtre Marc Fisher, de la paroisse de Cardiff ; ainsi que le prêtre Boniface Carroll, de l’Archidiocèse antiochien.
À la veille de la fête, les vigiles furent célébrées dans l’église inférieure de la cathédrale, dont l’iconostase est ornée de l’une des icônes les plus aimées des Martyrs Impériaux. Lors de la litie des vêpres, tout le clergé et les fidèles sortirent de l’église en procession pour se rendre auprès de la Croix commémorative en granit, érigée sur le terrain de la cathédrale en 2018 en l’honneur du centenaire du bienheureux martyre de la Famille impériale, et y prièrent afin que leurs intercessions en faveur du monde entier se poursuivent. Les vigiles se prolongèrent dans l’église inférieure, après quoi les sœurs de la cathédrale offrit une légère collation aux membres du clergé venus pour la fête.
Le vendredi, jour même de la fête, Monseigneur Irénée fut accueilli sous le porche de la cathédrale par son marguillier, avec le traditionnel pain et sel. L’Évêque fut ensuite revêtu de ses ornements, puis vinrent la lecture des Heures et la Divine Liturgie de la fête. Selon la coutume établie ces dernières années, la Liturgie fut célébrée dans l’église supérieure de la cathédrale, ce qui fut particulièrement bienvenu en cette occasion en raison des températures exceptionnellement élevées dans toute l’Europe. À la fin de la Liturgie, la procession autour de la cathédrale regagna l’église inférieure, dédiée aux Martyrs Impériaux, où un molében fut célébré devant leur précieuse icône et le mégalynaire chanté en leur honneur.
À la fin des offices, l’Évêque Irénée prononça une homélie sur l’amour que portent aux Martyrs Impériaux les enfants de toutes les parties du monde orthodoxe, mais tout particulièrement ceux de l’Église russe hors frontières, où leur témoignage continue d’inspirer ses enfants à s’élever, en ces temps difficiles, jusqu’à la pleine mesure de la vie orthodoxe. Un repas de fête suivit, abondamment préparé par la Fraternité des Sœurs de la cathédrale.
